I come from Nebraska, and yes I think that wild marijuana accounts for a good tenth of ditch vegetation. I remember making hash out of it as a junior in high school. Let me tell you, theres nothing in that weed for you but headaches and sore lungs. It's always been my intention, though, to go buy three strains from gypsy nirvana (that would come to a total of $50) and take soil from a naturally occurring hemp patch, then grow plants indoors using a mix of half natural soil and half real growing medium! The plants that did the best would be transplanted outdoors with the hemp.
Mexicans have agriculture down to a t -- they plant their domesticated corn fields adjacent to wild corn, because they know that the cross pollination will end up creating a strain that is resistant to local weather conditions, pests, and diseases.
Anyway, I would strongly encourage you and everyone else to do their best to introduce good medicinal genetics into this vast pool of hemp genetics.
P.S.
I think that the thousands and thousands of hemp plants you see all over Nebraska are remnants of hemp cultivation from WWII.

Don't think so. Industrial hemp was specifically bred to contain practically non-existent levels of THC levels, while the CBD levels are actually rather high relative to medicinal marijuana.
For this reason, making a good strain for your particular area would be somewhat more difficult than simply mixing up some good genes and bad genes. I imagine one might have to choose smoke a lot of very subpar weed to find out which ones get you high w/ out the fucked up CBD stoner crap; An act of generosity to future generations. Given the amount of pot that grows in wild, I think it would be theoretically possible to mix in good genetics and end up w/ decent stuff all!
AAAhhhh pipe dreams -- wouldn't it be wonderful?

My friends and I had a choice get Jethro Tull tickets on Labor Day 73. or to go to the Missouri river on the Nebraska border to look for pot. We went to Nebraska. At the border sure enough native marijuana growing everywhere. Someone brought along a nylon pup tent and started to fill it with pot plants as quick as we could. Having filled the tent it was then dusk and decided to start home to nj. On the road for about a half hour it was now dark and the wind started to pick up. The road was a rising banked turn the wind got under us and flipped over the car. End over end landing in the median as the highway straightened out. We came to rest and all got out and only I had cut my arm as the side window broke, everyone else was fine. A truck driving coming from the other side of the highway stopped and said it one of the most incredible sight he ever witnessed and was shocked we were OK. He quickly told us he had radioed the state police and if we had anything in the car to hide it! We dragged the tent full of pot out of the car and down an embankment. The EMT's arrived and took us to Des Moines to the hospital for stiches. To make along story short some friends from NJ came to get us. We went out to Rt 80 found the tent and drove back to NJ. We took the weed to a barn to dry, who the hell new what curing was. When the plants were just about dry of course the cops found most of them. We must have originally
had about 100 lbs of plants ended up with about 10 of biggest headache weed ever and sore lungs to boot. To answer your question, don't even bother. I never have seen Jethro
Tull.

questions about wild weed growing in nebraska
GROWING OUTDOORS IN THE MIDWEST IS TOUGH I LIVE ON THE SOUTH DAKOTA , NEB BORDER . THE HEMP OR DITCH WEED AS WE CALL IT AROUND HERE GROWS WILD EVERYWHERE . MY FRIENDS AND I FIGURED OUT ITS BEST TO GROW INDOORS UNTIL ALL THE HEMP HAS SEEDED THEN PLACE PLANTS OUTSIDE TO KEEP FROM BEING POLINATED AND WITH THE WAY THE SEASONS ARE CHANGING AND SUMMER SEEMS TO BE A BIT LONGER THIS WORKS OUT BETTER BUT STAY AWAY FROM THE DITCH WEED AS PRETTY AS IT IS TO DRIVE DOWN A ROAD AND SEE IT . ITS JUST AS UGLY WHEN IT POLLINATES YOUR CROP. PLUS YOU CANT GET ANYTHING BUT A HEAD ACHE FROM IT ITS ALL SEEDS AND NO BUD ANYWAYS

questions about wild weed growing in nebraska
if you grow outside, you should just take a wilderness hike (if it is safe to do without trespassing) and cut the stalks of all the marijuana plants within a mile. I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I bet a mile is sufficient. If anyone asks, just tell them that you're doing your civic duty to irradiate this horrific devils weed.

hmm i thought it was a couple hundred feet... but ive got over 10 acres of land with tons of different plants that could easily disguise weed and ive been doing alot of searching and killing all the male plants i come across
questions about wild weed growing in nebraska
You might well be right on a hundred feet. I really haven't the slightest clue. 10 acres of land, aye? Buy some Kali Mist! That's my dream. It's supposed to be one of the finest highs you can get.

dam that is pretty fine u know any good seed sites?
questions about wild weed growing in nebraska
I don't think its allowed to direct people to a commercial site via links, but gypsy nirvana's seed boutique web site is good. It lists seeds by seed company, not strain, so you'll want to type in "Kali Mist" in their search bar which is on the lower right hand side. Also Durban Poison is suppose to be a pretty unique strain, also with a good cerebral up high, if you don't mind the fact that it supposedly has a very distinctly anise/liquorish flavor to it. One person was saying that it is the most authentically flavored pot they have had (not that it is SUPPOSED to taste like anise or liquorish).
These are both strong sativa strains that are capable of being grown both indoor and out. Durban, with its South African heritage, is quite tolerant of heat, which I suppose would make it good for Nebraska, although it might not like the cold October temperatures that can sometimes occur. I remember a good two or three snowy Halloweens in Nebraska... never seemed to be snowy on Christmas, of course! Go figure!

A little trick I do with any decent seeds I run into is toss them in running water ( creek, river, whatever you have around ). They will wash ashore somewhere along the banks. If the plants don't get discovered they will go to seed and propogate. Therefore starting new stands all along the waters course. There are several local creeks I canoe every fall, often with pleasant results.
Enjoy

questions about wild weed growing in nebraska
That is awesome, FlyByNite! I don't know if I could personally bear to see a hundred dollars of seed floating down a river, but I suppose I might be able to do a bunch of bag seeds without crying to much.
A notion that has been toyed with in the forums that does not benefit the sower so much as society is to put the seeds in a bird feeder and let the birds sow them as they will. The best part is that each seed gets sown with just a little bit of its own natural fertilizer! ;-)
