12 Neglected Dogs Seized; Others Found Buried



CAVE CREEK, Ariz. -- Sheriff's deputies acting on a tip of animal cruelty raided the Phoenix-area home of rapper-turned-actor DMX and carried out 12 pit bulls in need of immediate medical care, investigators said.

They said they also found several dogs buried in the back yard of the Cave Creek property.



The Maricopa County sheriff's deputies said a tip came in more than a week ago about dogs being kept in inhumane conditions, said Sheriff Joe Arpaio.


Detectives went to the home and then called one of the rapper's lawyers, Arapio said. Investigators told him that the conditions for the dogs needed to be improved or deputies would obtain a search warrant, Arpaio said.

Authorities armed with a warrant returned to the home Friday and discovered a dozen dogs that were not being watered or fed. Arapio said.

A source told CBS 5 News that someone had recently been hired to take care of DMX's dogs while he is in New York. Neighbors said they haven't seen DMX for several months.






Investigators also found drug paraphernalia and a cache of weapons inside the home, according Arpaio.

Arpaio said it does not appear dogfighting was involved, just abuse of dogs.

Earl Simmons, 36, also known as DMX, was not at home when the raid occurred, according to deupties.


The animals were taken to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office M.A.S.H. unit. The facility at the jail is no-kill animal shelter created to house and care for animals that have been abused or neglected by their caretakers and rescued by the Animal Cruelty Investigative Unit.

DMX has a history of law-enforcement run-ins.

In 1999, during a "Hard Knock Life" tour stop in Denver, he was arrested and later cleared in the stabbing and shooting of his mother.

In 2002, he pleaded guilty to animal cruelty for neglecting 13 pit bulls in his possession.

Don't be racist. No where in that article does it refer to DMX as a black man, nor did the reports on Vick. They broke the law. If all you see is the color of their skin, then I pity you.

Im sorry folks but I'm gonna wait for ALL the facts on this one. I would REALLY have a hard time believing DMX was truly neglecting these aminals. I once was accused of aminal neglect for tying my dog out back of my house for 1 hour without dishes.

it said that he left someone in charge of the animals apparently they were not doing there job its funny how people are so quik to blame after this vick situation.i say wait to hear what he has to say before you start blaming,i just find it hard to believe some one who has 12 dogs and a rather wealthy status to just go out of town and not have his dogs looked after.

I agree with FBR that it isn't a race issue...perhaps a cultural one? or just slimy people who can't treat animals well.

Chron...I've read back on this issue....the man's been warned MORE THAN ONCE about his animals being neglected....and has had the EXACT SAME issue come up at least twice in his past....sorry.....you only get once in my book.....and even the once had better have a pretty good reason.

I think you folks might be surprised at the amount of ignorance people have (yes, today) about animals.....it's much MUCH more than I would have thought before I went into veterinary medicine. how is he a dog fighting promoter? i never once heard dmx promot a dog fight, it even says in the report no evidence of dog fighting was found.he hasent been charged with anything he has not been home for a couple months and left someone in charge and clearly they were not taking care of them so why are you automatically blaming him why not the care taker?im not saying that this is any way for a dog to be treated and IF he is responsibe then i agree he is a piece and deserves punishment but he hasent even elaborated on the situation yet,so all im saying is wait untill you hear his story dont just automatically think its another vick.

How hard is that not only to grasp but how many warnings do you need before you get off your ass and make sure your animals are taken care? Colour of fucking skin makes no differnce to law, if your white, black or even fucking blue and you break the law you'll get the same treament.

EVERYTHING these days get's turned into something about the colour of someones skin when it has nothing to do with it in the first place.

I'm with Lip and that's why I pointed out that even the "race leaders' seem to agree on this issue.....don't treat animals badly. Seems no matter what color you are people don't like it if you're mean to animals... :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Maybe people should have to do a background check to get animals, kinda like they do to get handguns. Not sayin it would work all the time but maybe it would root out obviously bad owners like DMX.

Not a bad idea...I used to work at a stray cat's refuge in England and I swear it was harder to adopt one of our cats then it was to adopt a baby! We knew those that really wanted a cat would be glad that we cared enough to check them out like that. Most of the cats had been abused in one way or another, we felt it was our duty to never let that happen to them again. WWW;)

I gotta weigh in on this one more time,;) I don't think DMX has ever been reported to be connected with dog fighting, in fact I'm pretty sure he loves dogs and many times has said so in his songs, the problem lies in the fact that he is an incompetant owner... which is not the same as a malicious owner. He wants to be around them but is mentally ill and incapable of making the rational decisions required to care for an animal.
