8 x 6 x 8 room setup help please
Hello was wanting some insight from some more experienced individuals about starting a grow room. The room is 8ft long x 6ft wide x 8ft high. I have some supplies 400 watt hps for budding and wanna use fluoroescents for cloning and veg. I have 4 48 inch cool whites for cloning and a set of 4 48 inch full spectrum bulbs for veg. I have a cloning machine as well. I also have an ozone genorator to combat smell and 4 inch vortex fan + hose running to chimney to be blasted out roof. Id like to grow "sea of green" method. Can someone please let me know what else i should get for the room setup. Was also wondering how many moms i would need and how many plants for each growth stage to maximize my room size. This room will have to be used for both cloning veg/ and budding. This would be my first time trying this method so all the feedback is welcome please share your knowledge so i can set this up properly..... thanks

Maybe treat it like two closets. Like seperate it into a flower room and a growth room. Maybe rack or layered system in the growth room like split the verticle space 60 / 40. Could have mom down below and kids above. Saw something like it somewhere online.
I am sure you have read all the post about reflective material or paint. I made sure my vents were at the top of the room and that worked out. I had air inlets below but that is a problem. I should have more fresh air coming in and now I have to find a way to cut another hole to outside. Dealing with exhaust cooled Sodium required another in and out for the air. So that was my mine mistake. I have eight footwalls and use yo yos to hang from center and that has worked out.
I am sure you have thought about wiring and where you want your stuff. I wish I had put mine just inside the door. Anyway it sounds like you have a prime piece of real estate and the experts here will chime in and help you out.

I recommend 50W per square foot. I would say you need at least 2000 more watts of HPS, if you're using the whole room for flower.

No i need to split up the room for both growth and flowering. I also have been thinking of doing somekind of shelving for moms and babies in the one side and have the other side just for flowering so if im splitting the room up like this wouldnt the one 400 hps do the trick for the flowering part of room? any other suggestions?

Buy a MH conversion bulb for the H.P.S and use it on the veg side (after you partition). Buy ya a new 600 or 1000 watt for your flower side(w/digi ballast) and grow some forearm sized budz.
Use them 4' flouros for seedlings/rooting yer clones.......and yer all set up.

Do you think the 4 inch vortex fan is big enough for a room this size or should i go with bigger unit? Do you think the ozone generator is good enough for combating smell along with venting out roof or should i look into a scrubber?

400W is enough for 8 square feet (2'x4'). If you make your flower room 2x4 feet, the 400Watts will be enough. You might get away with 4'x4', but your bud density will suffer.
I'd get more light.

I'd get two 600-watt lights for flowering, and build a medium-sized cabinet to hold your mothers and clones and put that near the doorway so it's easy to get to. You'd have to restrict your access to your veg stuff to the day part of the flowering cycle that way, so as not to freak out your flowering plants.
A 4" fan won't be enough. I don't think a 6" fan would be enough either. That's almost 400 cubic feet. I'd get at least an 8" fan, and a beefy carbon filter to match.
I use a 400-watt HPS in an area that's 20" deep by 46" wide -- not quite 2' x 4' in other words, and it's barely enough. Not much canopy penetration, especially at the edges of the 46" width (so I supplement with some CFLs at the edges). I guess it depends on how much of that space you want to devote to flowering. If you use a significant amount of that square footage, you will need much more than a 400-watt light.

I went a took a look at the guys set up similar to the size your working with. He does have it split in two. The first section has two sections. The larger being the bottom and the smaller on top. Uses flourescent lights above both. Then he has a lightproof barrier between the two sections. The second part is the "sea of green" and he has an 1000 watt HPS. It is a really slick setup and I sketched it ( sorry he said absolutely no pictures). I believe the moms live below, cuttings are grown above and then moved over when ready. He is a nice guy but really did not want to discuss details. The results have looked really good. I copied some of the ideas when I set mine up but his is sweet. He had all that space to work with.
One thing I did encounter with mine was power. I replaced the line with 12 gauge and no more problems but if you have not wired yet, put in big stuff, you wont be sorry.
Good luck and have fun. Sounds like a good project. Let me know if you want me to post the sketch.

Some other people have also told me to get a 600 watt digi. anyone know cheapest place to get a 600 watt digi? not to keen on ordering grow equipment offline dont know how safe it is. If i go with bigger light like the 600 or 1000 what kind of timer should i get that is nice n safe for the light? anything else i should look into maybe getting?

Question: if i go SOG do you really need a vegitation area at all beside for the moms? Cant you take the rooted clones and place them directly into the flower area? 2-3 wks into that start sniping off side branches of bottom 1/3 of plant to leave one cola?
OH i also wanted to kill power to breaker box and run line directly from breaker to room just for light itself. I have another line in there for running fan etc... Do you think that running that seperate line for a 600 and a bunch of fluoros would be ok? or should i just run the HID off that line by itself?

600 watt H.I.D. draws ~5 amps. You figure to only use 80% of the amperage of the breaker. I do not know what kind of flouros you are going to use. But to figure the amps you multiply bulb wattage times number of bulbs and divide that by 110, that will give you the amps.
If you do not know 100% absolutely positively sure what you are doing stay the fuck out of the breaker box. There is many a dead "I am an electrician" laying in the ground. I doubt you want your house to burn down either.
I'd order a Lumatek digital from bghydro.com. They are excellent, offer great customer service, and stand behind their products in the event you have a problem.
They have timers for your light as well.
I have yet to do s.o.g or ScroG, but you are on the right track with the rooted clones. You'll still want to veg them some though. There is a member here (cant remember name) who is a s.o.g god. His yields were massive. I think he vegged to 10-12" then put in screen. If I can think of name I'll post you a link later. He had it down to a science.

...I'd recommend a ballast made in the USA...not foreign. Good luck.

How tall you let clones get before flowering is probably strain-dependent. I did a mini-SOG experiment 6 or 7 weeks ago, flowered 6 AK-48 clones about 5 days after I put them into 1/2-gallon pots. They are quite large now, at least 3 feet tall. So, I did a second experiment about a month ago, also AK-48, 24 clones, 1/2-gallon pots, but flowered them 2 days after potting them, and they're still getting quite large. I guess with AK-48, you should put them in their pots and flower them *immediately*, the same day, else they will get quite large. I think I have enough vertical space, but sheesh, I didn't expect little 3-4" tall clones to turn into these 3' tall monsters...and they still have a month to go!
I'll second Lumatek ballasts via bghydro, good experiences with both.

Hah, yeah, it's pretty crazy, 24 3' plants compressed into a 46"'x20" space. That's 3.75 plants per square foot. Lol, didn't realize how insane it really was until I did the math.

The Sketch I did... Well as I recall in the first room the air intake was at the bottom. Just filtered. It had a big exhaust outlet at the top of the room the went outside then when you cross into the flowering section, he ported in cool air from the low air intake, ran it through a fan, through his HPS and then up and outside. Another air vent downlow is the fresh air for the plants. So three seperate air intakes down low and three exhaust ports above. I am pretty sure that is the way he had it.

Kronos,
Search out Justaseed and check out his ScroG grow logs. The guy is awesome. You can learn all you need to know and then some from him. Not seen him post lately, but his posts are still here.
best of luck,

Thank you i have been reading his posts. I also picked up a 600 digi with hps bulb, reflector, light socket, heavy duty timer for $289.00 from htgsupply came with 2 yr warranty. looked at lumatek and future bright brands only difference i noticed was warranty was longer. never heard of this brand but as long as it does what its suppose to do its all that matters. the name on the 600 digi i just picked up is " Digital Greenhouse" brand.

running the new line and adding the breaker to the breaker box was fairly simple....didnt take that long... shut off main breaker...this shut down rest of box but doesnt shut down the main lines coming in box, these lines are still hot and getting hit with 240 volts 110 per line would definetly kill your ass....as long as your carefull to not make contact with the two main lines into your service box your ok... hooked ground up first.....then neutral...then hot line into new breaker and snapped in place....put cover back on.... ran line to room to a junction box .... two lines out of junction for seperate gfci outlets.... turned power back on and checked gfci outlets and all work properly.... i read a few books about what i was getting into and followed step by step procedure and all is working well...im still here and not a charred piece of bacon....and everything is working propely and a ok
