I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
first off, I love pot. but I've noticed that the majority of stoners I've encountered are all kinda.. pathetic. they're still living at their parents' house or at best a shabby little apartment, have gone to junior colleges for too long or have stopped altogether. they work at dead-end jobs, spending half if not all of their minimal paycheck on more herb. I dunno... maybe there's a whole 'nother world of stoners who carry on decent, productive, and respectable lives. I just haven't met them. (please do convince me otherwise with examples of such people if you can!)
I guess I'm just honestly scared that once I get past the stage where pot can simply be regarded as a rite of passage (like that high school/college experimental phase), I'm still going to be doing it. I won't have outgrown it. and then it's going to hit me that I'm 30 years old, still toking everyday, sitting on my ass and typing into a weed forum, raving about my latest piece.
I don't know if I'm gonna get a lot of hate from this.. but it's just how I feel.

sounds to me like you are on your way... and yea there is another world of people that get high (people on the super down low) but you described the vast majority

You'd be surprised at how many people with power smoke bud. The only difference between them and the lowly stoner, is that they have money. Lots of it. And they get dank ass shit every time they toke. They have a house, a nice car, etc. A friend of mine goes through a qp of rhino a month or so, last time I checked, and he's a lawyer (he's even worked some of my cases, heh...)
If YOU make your life a success, it won't matter if you toke when you are 30. Weed will become legal within the next sixteen years, so it wouldn't be anything bad. If you made your life a success while smoking weed the entire time, that just proves that weed is not that bad at all. So what if you'll still toke at 30? My grandfather toked until the day he died. (But I suppose it'd be natural for him, he was in Vietnam. Said he and the troop did alot of different drugs to cope with the craziness on the battlefield. He just stuck with the natural herb.)

It's down to the individual, and i'm disappointed you're so stereotypical of someone who smokes cannabis. Parents, governess, doctors... anyone and everyone can smoke pot and be in total control of what they do with their life and how it turns out, its down to you. If you're thinking in 30 years you're going to be a "loser", do someting about it.
-
I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
Agreed. Pot won't make you a loser, you will.

Woooo, Calm down... I have noticed one thing about Marijuana smokers; there are many types of smokers. The main two type are smoker who doses it because he likes it. He/She smokes because it fun and they are having a good time. Then there are smokers who do it because there life is shallow and they have no purpose in life. They smoke to escape there life and that said. At least thatā??s what I think.
You my friend do no fit tin the last category. Itā??s simple; you have thought this out (probably when high). If you didnā??t care you would not took time and wright this out. So calm down. Itā??s not weed that makes people lazy or looses. Thatā??s just who they are and they are blaming Marijuana for it. Not every can be a winner at the game of life. There has to be some kinda balance.

Don't worry! Weed apathy is a myth!!!
I've been smoking weed for 36 years.
I also ran my own company, managed several annual festivals (still managing one), and travel to Europe regularly. I live on the west coast with my soul mate, who also smokes every day. She is a degreed professional, working in a major hospital. We own a home, and drive a Prius.
We met at the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam.

I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
You probably don't meet people who are responsible stoners because they really don't make it everyone's business to know what they do. You might actually know a lot of people who are succesful and smoke marijuana but just do a good job at not making it a top priority when other things are important and keep it a private thing.
-
I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
A lot of my friend's parents smoke, and I live in an upper-middle class suburb. I go to college at the University of Cincinnati, and several of my professors smoke. I'm a productive person, and still in college...I'm successful in life so far, and I smoke a lot. An old employer of mine said, when he found out I smoked, it changed his opinion of marijuana and users completely (he used to think weed killed brain cells and made people apathetic/irresponsible).
Chances are, the people you know with shitty lives smoked because their lives are shitty. Their lives aren't shitty because they smoke.
-
I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
True, your looking at the wrong people. There are tons of people that are stoner's and can survive and prosper in this world and still smoke bud. It all depends on whats more important to you, those who have shitty lives smoke for it to seem better and are happy in the position there in with there life because of it. You don't have to be a happy person just because you met societies standards of success. Remember that.
-
I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
I don't think you are going to become like that if YOU don't want to. If you just sit around on yer ass all day long and smoke and never make yerself get up and do anything productive then yes you will turn out like that. My boyfriend and I write papers for school sometimes and work all the time while stoned. No big. Just learn how to be productive while high.

I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
You would never guess that I have used pot for 40 years. I am a quiet, patient, 60 year old, grandmotherly woman. I'm one of many "invisible" pot smokers. I work in special education with the kids no one else will take on. I am quite artistic (I quilt, write, paint, sculpt in wood and clay, and hit the link in my sig for my latest project- not art, but quite a piece of work, never the less)! Most of my college papers were written while high and I graduated with honors! Lazy? No way in hell! Pot is a "mutable" high- you can toke and kick back OR you can toke and clean the house, create a work of art or whatever! Pot is what you make it! Don't blame the apathy on pot- place the blame where it belongs- on the individual!
"I guess I'm just honestly scared that once I get past the stage where pot can simply be regarded as a rite of passage (like that high school/college experimental phase), I'm still going to be doing it. I won't have outgrown it. and then it's going to hit me that I'm 30 years old, still toking everyday, sitting on my ass and typing into a weed forum, raving about my latest piece."
And have you ever heard of anyone ask "Will I grow out of alcohol?" Alcohol is also a rite of passage for that"high school/college experimental phase"! Funny how no one considers alcohol use after college "aberrant"! Even though alcohol is addictive and potentially lethal in it's effects, our society accepts it's use as "normal adult behavior"! Pot, on the other hand, is considered a "dangerous", immature folly!
Well, I am certainly past the high school/college experimentation phase. I find it stimulates my creativity, makes tedious work (like housework) less of a chore, eases my migraines and arthritis, and makes my life better in so many other ways! - Granny:hippy: (every day toker)

I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
PLENTY of successful people smoke weed. I know plenty of people personally.
-
I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
I'm here to tell you that my best friend and I smoke as much as we can, and we both work in careers that pay 45000.00/yr. Your hanging out with the wrong crowds if that's all your seeing. We even own our own homes and raising our children as single fathers.

the "good pot smokers" you don't see a lot because you simply don't know they smoke.

I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
My father was a stoner, and ended up going to Boston Uni, Oxford [he was there as a Rhoads Scholar], then Harvard. Now he lives comfortably in a multi-million dollar house. Another one of my freinds father, was a total stoner, and ended up going to Standford and Harvard, then became a major player in Goldman&Sacs. The stoners that end up with crappy jobs and no education, were just losers to start out with.

Here's one thing, at least in the US. It's very discriminated against, so if people know you smoke, guess what? Your job opportunities dry up. Also, those people who are freewheeling and open about their behavior are more likely to get caught, which means they get no federal financial aid. Then there's the piss tests for jobs, and when you're already working for a company. You toke, you don't get the job, you don't get promoted, you get fired and the next one you interview with calls up your old boss and the old boss says "Yeah, he was one of those dirty hippie stoners" and then you don't get another job except at McChronalds. (So named because the people working there who aren't undocumented workers are there because they are stoners.) IOW, the self-employed, the people who got through school before our stupid laws about losing funding got passed, the independently wealthy, and the trust fund babies are the ones who can toke and have the good life. I see it as partially a discrimination problem, and also self-programming with your own stereotype. (Like some kids I know who wear saggy pants and pretend they can't read because it's so white. Not to be racist, but I work primarily with disadvantaged youth and it really is a significant percent. Not majority, but the faction is there.)

I totally agree with Storm crow, you can do whatever you want in life and still be a pot head. I have smoked for 13 year's, am a father of two and I like to think a good husband. We own our house and also have a small cottage. I am a foreman for a multimillion dollar company with 8 people working under me daily. To me smoking a bowl at night is my beer after work. The only difference being that pot happens to be illegel so I have to be a little more conservitive about where I do it and who I am with. You are the one who decided's what kind of life you want to have and if you want to continue enjoying cannabis. Just my thought's...
-
I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
My friends and I are all middle aged and quite successful (not bragging) so the stereotype of the lazy, unsuccesful stoner rings hollow with me. The people you are talking about would be in dead end jobs with or without the weed.
-
I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
lol what gets me is that you seem to be smoking, as you describe it, as a 'rite of passage'. If you need ganja to serve as social validation then, yea, it'll probably be a negative experience for you and you may end up using it to fill up some intangible, unfulfillable void inside you for years. However, if you smoke as a way to relax with friends, relieve a little stress and/or find a deeper sense of equilibrium and balance in your life then you shouldn't have any problems with 'motivation' or career achievement.
A 'lazy stoner' is isn't lazy because they smoke weed. They smoke weed because they're lazy. If you wanna get philosophical about it, lazy stoners aren't really lazy at all but rather, are people who simply get more satisfaction from toking, and chillin out than from working a 9 to 5, owning a house in the burbs and living the so-called "the american dream"

It depends whats more important to you, smoking and getting high, or getting in a routine of going to work, eating, sleeping, showering, chilling on the weekends.

I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
Well im 18 right now and I know im way younger than most of you guys so my example wont be that significant. I have been smoking since 8th grade. I graduated from high school with honors and got accepted to the best university in Puerto Rico. Not many people get to go their. I smoked everyday and got A's with no problem. You just have to be responsible and know the correct thing to do.

I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
I work for a major engineering company, and I have a very nice townhouse and car. I payed my way for everything I own, and dont spend more then I am comfortable with spending on weed ever.
People who are like what you were describing, are like that with or without pot. Its the person and the personality, not the drug. Remove the drug from the equation, and I think you would find that they dont change much, if at all.
-
I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
People I have smoked with, or that I know smoke:
-A Doctor of Dance
-a microbiologist
-a physical chemist studying the brain
-an electromechanical technician
-a card dealer in Vegas making 60 grand a year
People with good jobs that smoke are a lot more private about it. They want to protect their reputation. When you are young, and don't have shit, who cares?
Also, I am a productive stoner. When I smoke, sometimes I do nothing and play video games, but sometimes, I do errands, housework, and yardwork. I have gone to work high sometimes, and worked just as good or better than if i was sober.

I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
I am 51 years old, own my own home, earned a masters degree in mechanical engineering, hold journeyman machinist papers, retired military(22 years), hold a national cert as a hazardous materials technician specialist, I own a heating and A/C contracting company(certified master HVAC technician), licensed HAM radio operator for 30 years, and a bunch of other stuff.
Its not the weed, its the person. You can sit around on your ass, stoned all the time....or..... you can apply yourself and become a responsible, productive, member of society.
Just remember 2 things.......
1) The only thing that stands in the way of you doing or being what you want, is YOU.
2) All things in moderation.
FWIW, I toke 4 - 5 times a week..... and even then, only later in the evening, because my job is too dangerous to attempt while stoned.
-
I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
I smoke everday and was top 10 percent in my highschool class, and am scholastic-athletic all-american (swimming). One of my friends who also smokes every day is like top 2 percent (top 10). My school is also one of the most competitive high schools in the state.

I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
I've debated this several times in my head and after reading this post just thought i'd share my thoughts. I didnt start smoking until my first year of college up till that point I was very against smoking due to all the war on drugs crap campaigns in schools throughout the late 80's and early 90's. Anyways, thanks to a good friend in college i was introduced to the great herb. I have been smoking every since. And now that i am 25, married, and have a baby the thought that "Am I too old to smoke weed" has been crossing my mind. When i was in college it was easy to assume smoking was ok because i was in college. But now its different. I smoke for alot of reasons and get alot back from it. I suffer from migraine headaches which were passed down from my dad and it helps them. I also have back pain and it helps to sooth it a bit. I am also a semi professional musician that writes original music and the gonja definately helps me be more creative and feel the music better. I never was much of a drinker even in high school. I just never acquired a taste for beer. I can drink whisky straight but thats it, and thats not very often. I come from a very very redneck populated area and smoking is definately looked down on by the majority of people here. Its more of a drink to you puke, smack the wife, and drive home drunk mentality. Its sad really. I also enjoy driving stoned and feel like i am a way safer driver while stoned. I normally drive alot slower and pay attention more while fried. Anyways, i agree with everyone who said that the dope shouldnt be blamed for making you lazy. Thats in your genes already and will be there no matter what your poison is. I work at a seasonal job which is normally 7 months working 5 months off. And by the 7th month i am ready for a break anyway and i enjoy having the free time to spend with my family, play music, and play sports. After a few months of sitting at home and watching the price is right stoned i am ready to go back to work. I'm not saying i'm lazy but its nice to have that little break every year. Kinda like summer vacation in school. I dont make a ton of money doing what i do but i enjoy having the time to enjoy life right now that i am in the prime of it. Several people i know have told me that i need to grow up and get a good job buts theres nothing really out there that would let me continue to play music. Thats kinda whats brought this rant on.

I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
I felt as though a stage of growth in my life, was when I decided to NOT hold pot against myself. Most of my youth, I felt as though marijuana was the type of thing that sorta "fizzles out" as we age. I realized that the most immature aspect was the fact I knew it was helping me far more than any meds I had been on, and still didnt have the balls to stand up and say HEY. Well, I grew them nuts, and I'll be damned to EVER question the validity and advantages to cannabis. Now I feel more like Hmmm. ...maybe I should have smoked less as an adolescent and more when I'm older? The way I see it, younger people should be very careful not to get TOO involved with pot. My number one reason being the obvious potential of marijuana to ENCOURAGE, (not create) apathy and an all too common lethargic attitude in kids.
-
I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
It all comes down to what kind of person you are in general.
If you are an apathetic lazy person normally, then that is how you are, weed or no weed. Some people are just fucking lazy and worthless for a period of time in their life until they get their shit straight, and someone clues them into how the real world works. It just happens that said people also smoke, giving the rest of us a bad sterotypical name.

I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
I'm in college and there are a ton of intelligent, fun, and successful cannabis consumers everywhere. It's just your environment.

I'm scared I won't grow out of pot...
I felt the same way for a bit but when I hear stories of other people I find hope. But do you believe people on forums? Until I've seen proof with my eyes, my very own eyes, that someone who tokes and has become successful, then I will believe it.
It's all a myth I reckon, and it's all in your head. Weed will do that, you have to go with the flow I think. You'll get good highs and bad highs?
