My job is killing me what should I do ...

So I'm working at this office where all I do all day is call people. I am a very creative person and this is turing me into someone I dont want to be. I never thought I would give into working in a cubical, but since I couldn't get into college, and I needed to move out ASAP, This manotonious (sp?) boring job was what I could get. I can't go to college, as I am 18 have 1200 in the bank and that is petty much just going to my apartment. I only make 500$ every other week, and It's not enough. I got lucky with my place and Im in living in center city philadelphia, so although there are a lot of places to work, there isnt anywhere that would be good long term. Working as a waitress I wuold make more than I do now, but that in the long run I wouldnt be able to make as much money as I would working at the company I do now. If I stay here I will be an drone, but will have the opportunity for a good career in the future. Im against working like this, as a lifeless robot like person, but because of stupid money I might not have a choice. What should I do?

Work on your creative outlets.
Paint. Take art classes at a comm college or rec center at night.
Philly has lots of opportunites for an artist to learn.
When you have been at your job long enough to get promoted to management, they might actually pay for you to go to night school. Talk to your supervisor and let him or her know that you have ambitions beyond an entry-level job.
Make your job work for you financially NOW so you can pursue your hobbies and talents LATER.

Yeah, think about what you really want while you work there. During the days you have off go hunt for other things maybe that you could or would be intrested in. Who knows its a big place you might find some very intresting things that you could like.

i say, move somewhere secluded, out in the woods. live in a tent if you have to. just for a summer. and grow at least 100 plants. then harvest and sell them. then your rich!

I was you once.....when I was 20 I was working in an office a post clerk to be honest I detested it but had booked a 3 week trip to greece and had to pay for it In April that same year I gor 'promoted' to data enrty and my best childhood friend my cousin Jen died she was hit by a car on her way home from her own surprise birthday party....This horrific event shattered my world. I stayed in the job but was deeply unhappy I didn't fit in...it was a dismal place to work it was bleeding me dry....I went on holidays and whilst there I decided to try do work in the field I always wanted to I wanted to be a vet but realised early in secondary school academically it was out of my reach so the teachers said. Losing Jennifer pushed me into making this decision

So I came back from Greece told my parents my dad went mental as my wages would be only a third of what I was earning but I did it I even found a local Vet to take me on. I sucessfully passed all my exams, with a lot of work and a lot of poverty there was no such thing as minimum wage. I went on to run the clinic for 12 years......I am now currently seeking out my next endeavour as I have been busy bein a mammy to three boys for the last nine years...

Enough Waffle sorry.......my point is listen to your gut......what is it telling you see if you are been nudged......listen take the leap and go for it... You are the only one that can change your current position......we can all be dead tomorrow

The millitary could be a good idea. They will help you out with your college and you get nice perks from being in the millitary, but I dont think I could ever join the millitary.

I can't not emphasize the point you have to let your supervisor know you have ambitions beyond the job you are currently working.

Depending on the type of office job, it could be as dead-end as a waitress. It's important to be pro-active and express your ambitions.

You are young. Working in an office sucks when you around 18. I been there, it felt like I wanted to kill myself everyday. But the persistence paid off. For my age, I have a buttload of experience, I can handle the ways of an office better than college grads 2 years off the bat.

Also, not every office is treated equal. There are some office environments I'd refuse to work in. Like every area of employment, you have to keep looking until you find that right environment with the right people. You have to enjoy going to work everyday, seeing the same folks for 8-9 hours a day. I work a job that would be so boring to many, but I love going into work, because I see my peepz, and the environment is laid-back, and very little pressure.

Plus explore your benefits package. See if they have a tuition-reimbursement program. Take advantage of it too, if you get all As, you can get your degree for free.

Word! I felt the same way when I started to work fulltime. I felt my creative juices being sucked out of me. Everyday I worked there it just vanished so slowly. I know I'm way more outgoingly creative than half those bastards there and they only look at me weird, so really I'vve dumbed myself down to their level so that I could be understood and not be so weird.
But I do keep myself creative with my guitar but thats as far as my artsy me ever went anyway..

student loans. community college youd be able to afford if you saved

Thanks for the suggestion but I think that is the last thing I would do. Not only am I agasint violence, but I hate authority, and uncomforatable matresses.

So it's a wierd couincidence (i know i cant spell) last nite my mom calls (and we hardly ever talk and dont get along so I knew it was bad) me and goes I have some bad news ... I was like what ... (not my boss but my boss's associate is best friends with my mom) they apparently know that I have been stoned at work. So today my boss calls me in and asks me if I come in high, I of course said no I stair at a computer screen all day and it makes my eyes watery, and since I ve been moving out I have been really stressed out. so she belives me and starts in with how great I have been, that she has the most calls made since she has worked here etc ... So I'm like if I'm doing a good job then why would it matter if I smoked pot? I mean the only way you can tell I'm stoned is because I get red eyes I dont act stupid at all. So it was good she brought it up because it gave me a chance to express my conserns. I told her that I am really bored, and I dont feel like she is giving me enough to do. That I want to help her and the company out and do more things (because everyone in the office who has the same job as me does sooo much more than I do, but since I'm also 6 years and a degress short of them they treat me as if I cant handle a lot of work) and I told her that me just calling people all day (I feel like that nina girl in office space 'corpral account nina speaking ... just a moment!' lol) and that if she gave me more to do I would work better and be on my toes a little more. It was a really good talk and I am feeling better about working here. I have realized that when things bother me I need to learn to speak up about it. I mean people cant read minds so I dont know how I ever exspected to have things change with out asking for them to!

Life is too short to spend as a drone and it fucks with your mind after long enough of supressing your own personality. Im 18 too and tried data entry for a while last summer, when you see middle aged office pawns that go home and watch tv all night after a long day you wonder at our age how someone could ever become that way, then you work a job like data entry for a while and see how frighteningly possible it is.

Tons of people are in limbo out there, too scared of the prospect of being job less for a little while so they tolerate the drudgery to continue living at the same standards.

In short, RUN

quit. you should have went to college first instead of being on your own. if you can get loans, do it. its better than working all day.

I'm a creative person and I like doing construction, lots of fun hauling 97lb blocks on my shoulder all day!

and yes it is every other week! im used to spenidng twice what I make in a weekend, but Ill take my freedom of being away from my parents over fancy meals and new designer clothing.
im starting to think i should have gone to college, but i love being independent, its not easy at my age but im loving it. and althoguh my parents are really wealthy, ive HATED depending on them, and if I was to go to college I would want to do it on my own. But at the same time I wouldnt want to spend forever paying off loans. I could go to my parents they would love to send me to college, but I am trying to detach myself as much as possble from them. I pay for everything myself and it has given me more confidence.

As I said explore if the company has the tuition reimbursement program. I take advantage of it, my company is paying me approx 80% to go to school. Only reason it's not 100% is because I don't get As all the time lol.

It's a hard and stressful, but it's rewarding.

You don't ever have to close the door on college. Simply don't. You always can if you want to.

Quit your job and go out and get drunk like I did yesterday. They pay me peanuts to do a production line job, I work hard, but it's never good enough. We must be miserable when we work, we are not allowed to listen to nice music on our headphones even though it is good for productivity. So I told them to stick it, now I don't have money coming in again...

I think you should try to get financial aid. You are a dependent of your parents until age 25, if a student, but there are ways around it. When I 1st went back to school, at age 23, I received financial aid, but had to prove that I was not a dependent of my parents, as they were unwilling to take a Federal Plus loan for me. I had lived on my own since 17 anyway, so it was not difficult to prove.

I also had to take out both Stafford and Perkins loans, but you just have to weigh the benefits. There may be numerous scholarships/grants you could qualify for too, but you won't know until you try.

I am 28, and still in school now because the 1st program I graduated from in medical administration did not land the career I desired, so now I am in biotechnology, but considering switching to medical laboratory tech, since I recently became employed by a lab.

From experience, if I knew then what I knew now, I would have finished college much earlier. I was unaware I could have qualified for financial aid and loans, and it is just so much easier for you when you are young. To be 22 or 23 and have a degree in something is a much better position than being older without one.

So my advice is to get into school, any school, you could start at a community college and enroll in a transfer program if you'd like. Either deal with the job you have now, or find something else suitable until you can do what you really want, and just keep in mind you will not be doing it forever-just "bide your time" as they say, and it will work out.

this is my view on work: ur not there to like it and have fun, ur there to make sum scrilla my advice save up some bucks and invest in a grow room or find a nice outdoor spot and become ur own boss

Yeah that's why we don't like it, its boring and it's bad for our health. I don't want to be rich, just treated like a human being and not taken advantage of by greedy corporations. There is no reason why it should make us all fucking miserable. I'm no whore to the capitalist machine.
