whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
I have heard bad things about them. But of course being the asshole I am I tried them. I'll be real with you. If you got some hps you are better off. I found through experiment that the compacts work quite well if you insist on useing flouro's. You need to use more of them then regular strip lights but they create just a little more heat with out burning the plant, in my situation that was perfect. I have a couple different setups just for bullshits sake and I am far from a commercial grower but I have learned to experiment and that marijuana will bounce back from almost anythig you can throw at it. As far as the different colors and spectrums, I'm an electrician and as far as I know they only come in one color due mostly to the factthat most people use them to save money in their regular home fixtures. Hope that might help. PEACE

whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
no hps here...yet.
Money and heat/ventilation(wanna start cabinet grow in 4x2x5 foot space) have me exploring alternate light sources- I have looked at
.......red spec & coolwhite fluorescents in rotation, reptile UV lights, envirolites(not available in my area), and outdoor security light conversion(mercury vapor & HPS each good sources of UV), these lights go 75-150 watts or so...
If anyones got more Ideas...Im a listenin....lol.......anywaypeace-420-I'm out!

whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
Sorry for the slow load of the pics!
I've been following this thread for a day or two (since i couldn't post)
I've setup my grow box with 3 compact flouro's. so a total of 450w in compact flouro's, and i just threw a cool white 150w bulb in there. So i'm a good solid 600w now, 9000lummes+.
as you can see from my pics, i'm doing quite well for a first grow, the oldest one is going on 5 weeks (she's the one in the makeshift beer box) the others are a week and 2 weeks behind.
I'm going to put them into 12/12 probably on monday, i'm at 18/6 now.
P.S. No Word of a Lie, that 4th 150w bulb i had in there just blew as i was typing this post.. weird...
Enjoy the pics. Give me feedback

Thanks Sensi,
I'll be putting them all into flowering probably at the start of next week. So, i am currently looking for a red spec. light to get in there with my compact flouro's.
I'll be light shopping this weekend, so i'll let you know how my flowering flouro's go.

I have gotten similar veg results using CF lighting....I also included a 100W reptile basking light & fixture. The rep. light hangs between 2 plants with a CF on each side 3 inches above each plant...I am now in the beginning of my 5th week of flowering...heavy crystals...small fluffy buds...check out grow set up board 4 light ideas...cab setup...makin ur own...peace

whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
hps very effective...but moneys tight here right now...experimenting with other light sources...
cant touch hps here for less than $70.00(secutity light conversion) parts for conversion not included(rewiring needed) ... for $40.00 I can get 2 red spec & 2 cool white tube fluorescents plus the fixtures..with cash left to buy a pack of papers...lol.
I will also mention I am aiming to grow in a cabinet system....400hps is about the max I could use without roasting my plants... gotta watch hps in small spaces....anyway...peace

So i've implicated more light bringing it to a full 595w of both the blue and red spec. 450w flouro and 145w of incandescent (as much as i can afford)
i'm putting em into flowering on monday!
as you can see there's a nice pic of my setup, there's two more sprouts on the top under a dual flouro.. they're THRIVING!
By the way, the strain is Black Jack (Black Domina & Jack Herrer)...if you were wonderin :D
enjoy.

hey bob bong what is the kelvin degrees of this bulbs? more than 5600?
-
whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
because i have 12 bulbs of 6200ºk for gorowing and 12 of 2700ºk for flowering but can i see your room with 4 bulbs and work so good u can tell me more about your bulbs!!
-
whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
kelvin degree! i'm not sure about the kelvin... all i can really tell you is the bulb is a 45w pull 150w output, compact flourescent. each bulb is 2900lummes.
450w
8700lummes
145w incandescent

whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
u can see that info in the bulb but well if u don`t know about it with more kelvin degrees the spectrum is more white (daylight) and if u rest k degress the spectrum turn to red ( for flowering ) 3200ºk for down
but your bulbs are 4 save energy?
because my indoor work with save energy bulbs 6200ºk 45 watts for growiing and 2700ºk 45 watts for flowering
-
whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
So i did some LST on the big girl (it's confirmed) as you can see from the preflower pic. the tiedown has opened the back 4 branches, so they should all grow as if they were tops.... my god this is gonna be beautiful.
Enjoy.
The other plant is #3. still to early to tell sex and i'm also trying a different form of LST... i've tied the branches together to form a nice green canopy, eventually i'll trim the lower sections and possibley clone if it's a female.. it'll be another big win for my first grow attempt!

The bulbs are a cool white, which from my understanding are in the blue spec. for flowering i've brought in 145w of incandescent, which should give it a full spectrum, it's more than 20% of the wattage of the cool white flouro's.
and yes they save money, they only pull 45w

whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
bob where you diggin up red spec lights in that shape...only see tube lighting in NY...USA
-
whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
Kelvin degrees are only shown on lights specifically made for growing plants.
-
whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
The compact flouro's are the curley shaped bulbs (3 main)
the other incandescent bulbs are just various bulbs and fixtures i have. A lamp hooked to the wall, a snake lamp in the corner, a converted lava lamp fixture and a small lamp (silver stand)
i don't have much money right now and no 100w bulbs around, so i've just combined as much red spec. light as i could with the already existing CF's

whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
kelvin is a kind of degree it indicates the spectrum of the light (color temperature)for growing is 5200 to 6200 (so close to the white a kind a daylight but more up more better) and for flowering 3200 , 2400 k (betwen red and yellow).
and not is only shown on lights specifically made for growing plants all the kind of lights had a kelvin degrees even a candle
-
whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
Do you see the # of kelvin written on the side of a candle?
You'd need a Kelvin Thermometer wouldn't you?
-
whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
well here is image 4 kelvin table and the right name is kelvinometer but really is a shitt because exist this kind of table's!!
and how supossed insert a pic here?

Yes, you seem to understand the kelvin. But what I am saying is that only grow lights, specifically made for growing are labeled with a kelvin color temperature rating. Yes, I too know that all light sources have a kelvin color temperature reading of some sort. You see, different types of grow lights heat up to different color temperatures.

From The Cannabis Bible by Greg Green:
CTT in Kelvin (K)/ Light Color/ Effect/
5000 to 8000/ Deep blue/ Encourages excellent leaf
and stem growth.
4000 to 5000 / Light blue/ Encourages good leaf and
stem growth.
4000/ Neutral white/ Promotes normal growth.
3700 to 4000/ Warm neutral/ Promtes rapid growth.
3000 to 37000/ Warmer yellow neutral/ Highly active
photosynthesis for all
stages of growth.
1500 to 3000/ Hot orange or red/ Promotes flowering.

if moneys tight....fluros work....more the better...add UV to your spectrum during flowering to induce more crystals( a plants natural defense from uv...) and attain better results...
....BUT... it is hard fact that if you experiment with multiple light sources indoors...
-quantity and quality can only be gained by using metal halide, high powered sodium(HPS), and mercury vapor (very high UV, sold commonly as security lights) indepedently or in some combination...
MH veg , HPS flower
HPS bolth cycles
CFL or fluors veg , HPS flower
HPS and MV lighting in combination during flowering can be VERY effective in combination producing large dense heavily crystalized budds...................
Ok thats my 2 cents on that...peace

whats the deal with compact fluorecents?
Quite nice picks BobBong. I was wondering what kind of power CFL'S would u need for a few plants? like how much wattage? i've finnaly understood the kelvin lighting on the bulbs, so ill need something beetween 5k-8k kelvin for growth, starting flowering 1.5k-3k right? how much did all that lighting cost you bob? ( The incandescents, the spek lights, and the cfls i mean) cheers, thx

bob, do you have a fan in your cab ( i didn't notice in the pics)? what are the dimensions? Nice little setup and good looking plants!
