Wart curiosity is gettin the best of me....

this probably belongs in medical but i want to get some attention to it first..

ok so for about 10 years i've had a wart on the side of my finger (or i assume to be a wart anyways, it's certainly not a mole, it's raised, if left alone developes a white 'head' and is very hard/calous... can also be sore to strong pressure/sharp edges)

anyways since 13 i've been trying to get rid of it.... first i started off by cutting it out (not off, i'd cut into fresh flesh) with a knife, when that didn't work, i did the same thing but followed by 20 seconds of direct flame from a lighter, when that didn't work, everything above but following with an ice cube on it til i could no longer stand it (2-3 mins?)

yet it always grows back....

then i moved on the to the conventional wart treatments (those lil bottles of pure funk you're supposed to put on it...) never went away... then recently i started using that dr. freezeoff crap on it... 8 treatments and still it stays.... i've resorted to just cutting it off with a nail clipper when it gets large and 'white' again...since when it's not there, it doesn't hurt really... but the longer it stays un messed with, the sorer the area tends to get...

so my question is... is this dangerous? i only ask cuz i know messing with moles can indeed cause them to become cancerous... but if messing with a wart were dangerous they woudln't have over the counter products, would they?

anyways i'm just wondering... i've pretty much accepted the fact it's NOT going away (i've tried everything under the sun) atleast with any home remedie so all i can do is cut it off when it starts getting sore....

Hmmm...well I'm not sure how dangerous it is, but it really can't be too good to keep chopping it off n shit.

Since nothing else has worked try the psychological wart removal method. It kinda worked for me back in the day. I'll explain why it is only kinda after I tell you what the method is.

Go to the store and buy a a few potatoes. When you get home, rub the potatoes on your wart, then bury them in the back yard. Wait a few weeks and the wart should be gone.

A doctor told me this method when I was probably 10 years old. Apparently there is some evidence that warts are a psychological thing (don't ask me to prove this Im just remember what some crazy doctor told me back in the day) and you can trick yourself into getting them to go away if you want it bad enough.

The potato works because the idea is that a kid will spend his own money on the potatoes so he will want the treatment to work so bad so he doesn't waste his money that the warts will eventually disappear. I say this kinda worked for me because once the doctor told me this, I thought it was stupid and didn't want to waste any money on the potato, so I just pretended I did all that shit in my mind and before I knew it I had no more warts and none ever came back.

yeah that ain't gonna work for me :p first, my wife loves potatoes... so we always have 'em next i'm not a kid, so the 1.00 i'd spend on a few of 'em wouldn't hurt me financially and of course lastly... i'm extremely immune to placebo effects.... although i kinda do have a placebo effect always....

to explain, i always have ot take a higher dose of whatever medication then the average person because i'm so convinced it won't work.... even if i've never taken it before in my life (although it has been tested not only by me but a doctor, by first giving me lower dose seeing it doesn't work then observing it actually does take that extra bit to get it work right..)

appreciate the effort tho but i just pretty much know that won't work for me.... you have any idea how warts are tied to the psyche? if i knew how i could perhaps identify what might be causing it and help get rid of it..

I had one just like that on me finger. I would cut it off but it came back. Once I cut it off then dug a little seed thing out of it. Then I put some wart remover on it and it never came back. I warn you though that it was painful as hell. Hurt way more then a tattoo.

Yea i knew it was a farfetched idea, but it seemed like you covered any other method I could think of. I'm not sure how it is attached to your psyche. I remember I always worried about them and I kept having new ones pop up on my fingers. After that trip to the doctor where he pretty much told me it was a psychological thing, I just sort of forgot about them and stopped worrying about it. I'm not sure exactly how much time went by but one day I remember looking at my fingers and all the warts were completley gone.

lol perhaps you should look up some of my injuries.... and i've been digging this thing out since i was like 13..... to where i bled so bad i had to actually put pressure on my finger for 5-10 minutes to get it to stop oozing blood...

problem is it's not working...

i'm getting so sick of this thing.... i'm about ready to just cut a huge chunk outta my finger hoping it'll leave.... (quite honestly i'd rather be mising a part of my finger hten put up with this thing for another 10 years...)

That certainly sounds like a wart. Warts grow back, particularly if they're not removed completely.

You're not likely to start a cycle that prompts it to become cancerous (that's really a myth about moles, too, that messing with them can promote cancer; it can't. It's just that moles can become cancerous, whether they're messed with or not.). What you're at risk for is somehow injuring yourself or giving yourself an infection with self-conducted surgical excision. I'm fairly certain you're not using sterile procedure.

That wart-removal stuff they sell in bottle is salicylic acid, basically the liquid ingredient in aspirin. It gradually eats away the wart from the top down, and keeping it covered sometimes helps it go away and stay gone, at least according to what I just read at the Mayo Clinic site. If you've had that wart come back a few times even after you've excised the top, it's probably time to show it to someone with better removal ability and also let that professional send it to a pathology lab for evaluation. It's a quick, easy procedure to have a wart frozen off, and it's easy enough to do the next time you're in a clinic or doctor's office for something else. Mostly, though, you want to make sure you're not leaving yourself with an open wound on one of the dirtiest places there is, your hands, that could potentially be the entry point for a nasty bacterial infection.

and my god thank you so much.... my wife is convinced she's gonna get cancer because she has two moles, and she's been worrying about the one that got hit when she got her tattoo like non-stop since she found out it was also tattooed.... finally i can tell her shut the fuck up about it (in the nicest way possible of course ;) but it does get rather annoying)

you also don't have to worry about me and infections.... i don't think i've ever had one in my life... i rarely get sick either (Actually phsyically ill as in flu or cold) i'm pretty sure i have a good strong immune system and i don't like dip my 'tools' in excrement <.< just cuz i don't tend to get infections doesn't mean i don't take precautions.... i also wear a bandaid over it after it's, for lack of a better word, an open sore.

the doctor thing tho... =/ i never go to the doctor.... last time i actually went to the doctor was durring that whole heart episode awhile back, and before that... well i honestly can't remember... i never did see the sense in paying some guy hundreds that i can do myself (and have done myself) for less than 20 (first aid supplies) the heart thing tho lol that was far outta my 'skill level' so i definately had to go then...

I know you never go to the doctor. But I also remember the chest pain. Next time you see someone for something like that, even if it's 7 years from now, have that person deal with the wart, too.

speaking of chest pain..... what are the symptoms in dumb-dumb drunkard terms for emphysema?

i get occasional stabbing chest pains, i'm not worried about it, like freaking out or anything, i'm sure it's cuz i smoke a pack a day.... just curious tho...

i ask because atm i have the same 'lung pains' but it's all the way at the top of my shoulder blades? it only hurts when i breathe in, and it's that same distinct hurt... can that be attributed to emphysema or would that be something else?

I dunno but lately a lot of skin looks like thin layers have been shedding at the end of a few of my fingers. I've been peeling it away. Don't mean to sound stupid cuz it's probably just skin shedding but it's annoying.

I used to have one. Just run down to your local drugstore and buy something for it. It should disappear in a few weeks.

Here's some good general info on emphysema, Slip. Dave deals with patients who have it all the time. They can have chest pain, but that's generally not one of the key symptoms. If you could see her get winded after just walking across a room and needing to sit down and breathe oxygen before she can recover, I'd hope you would quit that cigarette smoking ASAP. It's a heartbreaking disease to watch progress.

ok so what would the chest pains when breathing be? o.0 it happens all the time... i also tend to get very outta breath over the smallest things... not where i'm about to pass out or need oxygen to recover, but after i get winded i do need to sit down and breath for a minute.

get a chest xray -check for pneumonia.

if you have chest pains when breathing, you should quit smoking ANYTHING. also, if you are complaining about frequent chest pains, you should really see a doctor. that's not something that you can just ignore, or think about every once in awhile. because if you do that, then, nothing is going to happen about it or get better until something extremely serious happens, which could really harm you.

so the sensible thing is to go to a doctor. you seem to complain about a lot of health problems, and you try a lot of home remedies which never work. so logically, go to the doctor, and get medical advice there.

you're just asking random people for medical advice which could be extremely detrimental to your health. maybe there are a few informed people or medical professionals on these boards, but honestly, you have no proof of that.

so, go to the doctor, and take care of all of your health issues at once. even if you can't afford all the treatments, at least you'll know what's going on and you won't have to speculate or get potentially harmful advice from others.

I have a nasty ass wart on my finger too! Its disgrosting. I just read somewhere to duck tape it for about 6days then 1 day off. repeat if needed. Warts are a fungus and need certain conditions to survive and the xtreme heat might kill it.
