that's the type of cactus it is, before it's cooked... first they dethorn it (of course.... man that really would be one mexican food you'd regret later LMAO) then peel/skin it and cut it into green bean sized slivers...
Man, I had no idea...I'm kind of curious now:)
What about the pricklies? How do they get all of them off...wait a minute...I'm not sure if I should fall for this one...
not really sure as i've never made it
slip you just said it was your favorite........I've never heard of eating cactus either. It's not those super old cacti (?) cactuses (?) is it....what are those?
Cactus as in the actual plant!?..
Nopalitos (Little Cacti) recipe
3/4 pound nopal cactus paddles
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 jalapeno chile, seeded and minced
1 medium onion, chopped
3 tomatoes, chopped
1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1 tablespoon vinegar
Remove thorns from the cactus paddles and cut them into strips about 2 inches long by 1/4 inch wide. Boil the cactus paddles until they are soft and the texture is much like that of cooked bell pepper.
Heat a saucepan over moderate heat. Add olive oil, jalapeno chile and onion. Cook until the onion is soft but not browned. Turn the heat to low. Add tomatoes, cooked cactus paddles and salt. Simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes, adding the vinegar for the last 5 minutes of cooking.
Serves 4.
'course its much tastier to get it from a good mexican restaurant...cuz they dont use the cactus from the jar...they use fresh.... *drools* damnit now i gadda send slip to buy more tommorrow. we actually got into a "fight" over who could have the cactus.
you get some flour tortillas, spread on some refried beans, then scoop some nopales onto it, roll it up and *droooooooooooool* god they're tasty. if you eat too much of em, you'll get tired of it prolly (well, slip doesnt lol) but every once in awhile....god they're good
what exactly you mean by super old? lol....Quote:

it's not the only way mexicans use cactus to ingest tho.. :wtf: what do you think real taquiela comes from?
if only i could send yal some from the resturant down the street... i know everyone would love it.... it's hard to describe the taste but it's definately not some aquired taste or anything... the best way i can think is like tangy green beans with a slight pepper taste.
I have never eaten either to be honest. Doesnt sound like the most appetizing thing ever but the proof is in the pudding I guess. What does Cactus taste like? Do you just blanche it in water like green beans?
I've only had the fruit of the prickly pear. I didn't know you could eat the pads.
Prickly pear jelly is YUMMY though!
recipe is up above along with the best way i could explain how it tastes...Quote:

if you have an authentic mexican resturant around you (you'll know when the name of the place is spanish, and all tha tworks there is mexican/spanish people and none of them speak english too well lol) go ask for nopales... there are two kinds, cactus and bean soup and the better kind, which is what you see in the pic above, ask for flour tortilla's and refried beans with it...
I think what WH, meant by really old cacti are Saguaro cacti. I cant believe some people never thought of eating catus..
nah it doesn't come from those lol..
btw these are the ones they use to make taqeuila...
