growing in cabinets- custom making your own
I am thinking of constructing a cabinet growing system and I am seeking opinions on size , lights to use, and especially style of construction.
At this point, my situation is this; I want to have several mother plants (at present I have access to a nice Domina strain), cloning 4 plants at a time. I plan to grow spikes(sea of green style) and begin flowering at aprox. 6 inches high. I want to start a rotation where I begin flowering every 4 weeks or so... so I am thinking a large veg area for mothers and clones, and 1 flowering chamber(maybe 2).
Ideally I am thinking tube or compact fluorescent lights for veg, and 150 or 250 hps for flowering...flat white paint or mylar inside the cabinets, and I know I will need some fans for air circulation and heat dispersal in the flower chamber.
I want to get to the point I can sustain 2 smokers ...independant and all that... money and security are unfortionately a consideration at this point and all help is greatly appreciated...thx

this may help solve your problems, cheap and easy to build.
i made one out of a chest of drawers, works great, and very stealthy, well hidden.

I have decided to locate a dresser or cabinet with 2 areas....maybe make my own...second hand seems cheeper...gonna go 1'x2' for veg and 3'x2' for sea of green type cloning employing 3liter bottles... flowering at 6-8 inches and finishing under 2 feet. Height wise, I am shooting for 4 or 5 feet....1 ft planter height, 2' plants, 1' for reflector and lights(gonna go with T shaped dual compact fluorecents...4 fixtures in flower, 2 in veg). Did the math...should suit my harvest needs... 10 plants per flower yielding(conservatively) 2 and a 1/2 oz per harvest with a perpetual thing going...
harvesting every 8 to 10 weeks. Thats 1/2 O a week... about where I'm at... now I just gotta do it! lol

Quick question (to add to this)..provided that you have adequate ventilation is it possible to have a closet grow with a HPS light?

from what I gather...no prob HPS as long as the plants are no closer than 12 inches from the light or they will burn (leaves)...

you can get em at home depot or lowes for about $60-$70
they would be perfect for your cabinet and better for flowering
youd have to make minor modifications to the light, but would be better than those other lights

250-400 hps is the long term answer....money constraints must begin with other light sources...have obtained plans to alter hps security lights...still researching my options...
more as I know it...peace

Some times the obvious eludes you....once set up, I will clone 2-4 plants at a time, harvesting a few plants every few weeks, creating a perpetual harvest situation...

mercury vapor(security light conversion), 75-250 watt hps, red and cool white spec fluorescents in combination, and reptile basking lights(UV) are my present light sources that I am considering for use in my "inexpensive" cabinet grow plans...

phillips (C4 & L4), GE, and Sylvania all sell red spectrum fluorescent tube lighting in the USA... shop light fixtures and light tubes can be had for about $20.00 total...

I have two mercury vapor lights 175W each and over 100W of tube fluros on my plants, they're a few weeks in the veg stage but the mercury lights are perfect. They make the plants more greener it seems. Worth every penny, for $30 each light, cant go wrong!

To the Q about HPS, yes you can use it, but you neeed very good air flow and ventaliation to be able to control the temps.
Tbh, i would try a 200 watt envirolight.
