Skink, do you have a Skink?
Alright Skink, I never really knew anything about Skinks or that they even existed. Anyway I decided to look into them a bit and they seem quite cool pets. I was wondering do you have one? And what are some really good characteristics about them? If you own one that is. A friend of mine collects reptiles and insects, and I'm thinking about putting it forward to him about getting one. Are they easy to get a hold of? Let's not forget I don't live in the US either. Are there any known restrictions in other locations?

pet stores that have reptiles usually have them or know where you can get them... can order 'em off the net as well...
they don't really have many characteristics i know of tho.... i know they're not exactly the type of lizard to just chill on your shoulder like an iguana or monitor... they are extremely fast tho, so if you lose your grip on him or something it's likely you'll never again catch him...

A skink is one of those creatures that can actually lose its tail when attacked, leaving a decoy for the predator to focus on, while the slippery creature runs and hides.

Cheers for the info so far folks. I've passed that link onto my mate as well Slip so thanks. I like the fact they are supposed to be mellow, and very cool that they have a detachable tail if threatened!

Do geckos lose their tails like that, too? Because I think one of what I think is a gecko here around our house lost its tail when one of my cats went after it. I felt terrible for the poor thing. And the cat was left with only a tail section, so he was probably bummed, too.

yeah gecko's lose their tails too.... well depends on what kinda actually.. not all of them do...
if you're talking about the little white/clearish ones with brown spots we get around here in texas, yes...
i had a tayeko or however it's spelled tho and they're not supposed to and i accidnetly dropped the lid of it's tank directly on it's tail, severing it...

I wonder if in captivity they ever lose tails? I mean, how strongly is the thing attached? Do you have to grab it pretty hard, or does it drop off with not much contact?
That striped one in the pic is really cool.

they can't just make it drop off at will, but they do possess the ability to make it very easy to detatch....
in captivity... well depends on it's personality and how long it's been captive... they do it as a defense to get away from danger... so if it feels threatened and you grab it by it's tail, it will lose it...
iguana's have the coolest tails tho.... they can use their tails like a bull whip... and it does hurt just as bad when tehy get a lil bigger (not full grown, but not a baby, when they'r ea baby it still stings pretty damn bad)
used to have a friend who had a really mean one.... he would put the lil string from blinds down in the cage and it'd whip at it... one day he actually cracked the 10 gallon aqarium with his tail...

Blue tongued skinks are fucking sick, although hard to tame. Fire skinks are fucking amazing too!
I'm a beardy lover though ;)

Ok, sick story. Cats can be freaky.
A couple of weeks ago I was taking the dog to the vet when I noticed one of the semi-ferals laying on the lawn. I go to inspect and he's eating the guts of a chimpmunk ick. Later I take the scooper and toss the body over the fence. The next day it was back in the same exact spot I scooped it from!:wtf: It was a battle between me and the cat for a couple of days. The cicadas here didn't stand a chance either.
