Growing Under 250W HPS at 34C
Summer temps forced me to downsize to a 250W HPS, and I'm still generally at around 34C. I thought, rather than give up for the summer, I'd carry on with the crop just to learn first-hand what happens under those kinds of conditions and even more importantly, to provide an abundance of clones for the autumn. I must say, I'm quite pleasantly surprised at the results so far at 13 days flowering. So, this is 8 NL's, vegged for only 10 days, no cropping or any other methods, just thought I'd try to get one main cola from each plant, under only 250W HPS, at 34C:

No comments? Anyone want to guess the outcome? I'm thinking I'm going to get a few ounces from what I see, the quality may be crap though for all I know.

my friend just harvested 3 plants around the same height of strawberry cough and got around ounce per plant. his plants were a little more bushier than yours so you should expected around 3-4 ounces for all 8 since northern lights is a good yielder.

But these conditions are generally said to be almost impossible...

I have the same prob right now too. in the south USA its about 80 degree inside my grow room and outside is about 95 degrees. I was using 2-150's but wasnt enough light so i put up a 400 and the closet temp is 81-83 degrees. The plants are skinny but covered with budz, small though because of the heat so you will still get a decent amount I believe just not fat dense budz. Im gonna wait till the end of summer for the next crop because its only going to get hotter for me donw here...looks good bro..my pics are on the thread 2-150 hps closet grow in new mexico...peace ollie

I think I might get one of these in a week. Costs 100$, you fill it with 3 litres of water once a day, a fellow grower says he got his summer temps down to 27C with it:

Well, here they are at 35 days or something. Looking much better than I would have expected.

Strangely enough, they are looking nice. I'm beginning to wish that I'd let them veg for more than 10 days. Found 2 hermie flowers though, but I've coped with that before. easy if you catch them that early, and if they only show slight hermie traits.
That'll be an effect of the heat, of course.

Yea that ul make sense! the 250 seems to be putting up a good fight mind! :)

hey bro, i bought a evaporative cooler unit for $120 at lowes and it brought down temps about 5 degrees and added humidity. My harvest temp was around 84F and the budz were still very good size. So I dont believe the temps will harm as long as the roots are kept cool.

Funnily enough, I bought one of those a week ago too, lol.
Doesn't register much on the thermometer though, but it feels good on the hand:

Faithless, your plants look delicious and very healthy.
Evaporative cooling is dangerous in a grow room- watch for the increased risk of mold. Check that your humidity stays below 50% at all times, preferably at 40% or less.
It seems you have already discovered a major risk of high temps in flower- herms, yuck. Keep on top of those nanners!

Thanks! Yeah, I'll be checking that dead leaves aren't going black on me ;)
The buds are starting to swell nicely, just have to make sure nothing or little gets pollinated for the next 3-4 weeks.
Getting sticky too.
I took a long look and I estimate between 20-30g dry per gal.
Thats not bad for 10 days veg under these conditions. I bet I'd be getting 30-35g per gram under better conditions, 10 days veg.
Good strain obviously, and I've got clones from them.
I've been offered to join a 3 000W room, these clones will be marvellous for that. Plus, in that op, they'll be vegging for 2 months, waiting to get into the flower room. ;)

Check it out, I just had a brainwave. I just trained all the 8 colas in 11L tubs directly under the 250W light. (The leaf burns are actually from spilling nutes on the leaves). Need is the mother of all inventions.

At about 45 days flowering after 10 days of veg at a rough constant of 33 - 35C, 5 of 8 plants starting to hermie up a bit. Just need to keep any pollinating accidents from happening for the next week or so, and I'm home free.
So far, it seems high temps haven't affected the yield particularly, however, temps like this will cause hermy issues.
I initially considered flowering at night, but the fan makes quite a lot of noise, and I decided that I wasn't going to let the grow room completely dominate my lifestyle:

Yeah, a lot of the perfectionists will say stuff like that going above 80 degrees is bad for your plants, and going above 95 will kill them or whatever. But this plant is a lot more resilient than most of us give it credit for. After all, countries that have temps well over 100 degrees fahrenheit grow some of the best pot. Give it enough light and water and a little fertilizer, and it'll grow like, well, a weed. :smokin:
Fine-tuning your environment is necessary more for finicky strains and for coaxing a little extra bud out of your plants.

Oh damn, just realized I'm only at about 37 days of 12/12. That gives me another 2 weeks of hermy hunting...sigh. This is a critical period, it means all teh difference between a proper harvest and a ruined harvest.
I don't care if they get infected the 3rd last week, the seeds wont have time to develop, in fact some people feel that the buds swell if you pollinate them a week before harvest.
An interesting experiment, all in all though.

Woah, it's potent already! Nice. Great citrus smell. Very sticky.

Harvested.
7 NL's, vegged for 10 days, and grown at between 33c-38c, under 250W HPS.
About 20g dry missing from these pics, that I had to cast to the starving hords ouside my door, hollering and brandishing torches last night, lest I lose my life to the mob.
Weighing in at total 300g semi-wet. I think I'll land at around 180-200g dry.
Every single one hermied eventually, I was hitting around 38C for the last two weeks.
All in all, I bet I didn't find even 15 seeds out of 7 gals
I spent half an hour a day carefully snipping the tiniest tendencies towards male flowers. I also snipped the few seeds I found at a very young age, since this was an experiment grow anyway.
The results were very interesting, the flowers apparently healed themselves with new buds, as shown in this thread:
And finally, pics of most of the harvest:
