Purps Five weeks into 12.12
Here are a few pictures of my Purps plants five weeks into flowering. I am having a bit of confusiong as to weather the burning on several of them is from heat stress or nutrient burn.
My temperatures are 76 degrees lights off, and sometimes as high as 87 lights on (87 is the temp around the floor where the lights are on, which leads me to believe my canopy could have been over 90 pretty easily. I had some problems with ventilation but got it worked out, and hope to see lower temps tonight - will keep ya posted.
Some of the ladies look real nice, but I have also been battling spider mites this time. I have only found two plants thus far with mites, and I gave em a spray last night... and will remove those dead fuckers and their webs tonight when the lights come on. Look at them laying there dead still in their webs!
Will likely do another Pyrethrum bomb sometime soon to make sure they stay the fuck away.
What do you guys think...? Nutrient burn or temperature burn? The most of the damage is definitely on the top third of the plants, most of the damage being on the tallest of all the ladies. My PPM is at 870 right now which I figured they could handle. Perhaps lock out?
I water the plant until they are fully saturated but not flowing out of the bottom of the pot.. so lock out is a possibility too. This method has worked fine for me in the past though. I am using SunShine#4 and SuperNatural nutes, and also Hydrozime. Any opinions are appreciated.
Would love to bump the nutes up... I would think I could go higher than 870 this late, especially since a buddy topped 1200 by the end of his run (same genetics)

Did the burn set in slow or fast? Nutrient burn will usually set in fairly slow. Those plants look hurt, if the burning hit hard and fast, I'd have to say heat burn.
-

Seems the burn did set in pretty quickly though it's difficult to tell when you are watching over a whole bunch of em.
The bud shot with the leaves that look real bad..that plant also has mites (which are controlled somewhat now)
The leaves that are damaged from heat or nutrient burn are pretty dry and almost brittle.

Pictures 1 and 4 are the plants that have the damage on them but no mites. Doesn't most of the plants turn overly dark green when nutrient burn it taking place? Alot of em look real healthy to me, it's confusing.

no offense...but your purps must be the purps that people get way out here...it isn't purple, and it's $600 an ounce just because it's 'purps'
plants look good though

Purps Five weeks into 12.12
If it was nutrient burn wouldn't alot of the leaves even on the healthy plants look overly dark green? That's how I've seen it in the past.

Fuckin capitolists!!! I hate that shit, $600/oz. I remember this fake ass rasta in Humboldt charging tourists $70/8th for purple pot that We were all paying $30/8th on. Then I hear him talking about "1 love" all the time. Fake mother fucker.

I'm thinking heat burn, but keep an eye out for signs of nute lockout.

Mark look what you did to poor Dave! Stop that!, lol. I agree with Dave that it is heat here....got some good high temps, bent ends on your leaves on uneven burning pattern on the leaves themselves.....not to mention you said the damage was pretty much confined to the top third of the plants and your tallest ones were most affected.
I hereby rest my case.... :D

I just have a bit of a passionate hatred for outragous weed prices. It grows on trees you know, I've seen it.

OK I'm better now.

Hey Razzapiggy ,
A real cool chick on this site turned me on to a handheld temp gun . :hippy:
I found them on ebay for gas powered remote control cars for cyl. head temps / tuning . Acurate from 0-430 deg. in 1/10 degree increments for like 24.00 or something silly . You can measure the actual leaf surface temps w/ it . Maximium photosynthesis is achieved at like 68-78 deg. or so I been told .
:) You can rule out canopy temp. probs. super easily .
Peace

Yikes... just went in there and realized my pH is at nearly eight (sunshine#4) this is way too high. I was using 100% r\o water for a while and the ph was always pretty much right on always, so I needed to check it less frequently.
I have been using around 25% tap water mixed with the r\o water, and have not been completely on the pH so they most likely have been receiving 8.0 pHed water for a few weeks now - yikes. It's tough to tell what the problem is because lock out\nutrient burn\heat stress all look fairly similar on the page I view for plant problems.
Obviously going to check every single day from now on, but now I think I have my answer that pH problems are bringing up some lock out?
I don't have an easy way to flush em all, and quite honestly most of em look good... not huge buds but I'm dealing w. a relatively small yielder and I've been told they add alot of their overall weight in the last 3 weeks. But perhaps I should flush the ones that have the yellow patterns on a few leaves. What ya guys think?
-
Purps Five weeks into 12.12
Three weeks from being done, so I'm thinking flushing em out is going to make me reduce my nute strength to about 25% for a bit... that's not really good either so I am unsure of what to do here lol.
-
Purps Five weeks into 12.12
They have only received 2-3 waterings with the high pHed water, so I am going to go ahead and go as planned, at PPM 850 and add Shooting Powder which is high in Pot and PH to finish these ladies up in the next few weeks. If I don't see signs of improvement with the ones with yellowing on the leaves I will flush but I'm gonna try to just be vigilent about it from now on with this grow and see what happens. I really prefer not flush because I have to cut back big time on nutes after that, and most of the plants appear like they havent been overly effected by the water they were receiving.

Yikesssssssss. I was measuring the room temps with the censor a bit away from the canopy, I put it in there..and the temps are 98 and rising right now.. holy shit balls, I am an idiot since being on vacation I have not been as much on this as I should be. I think it's time for an a\c unit !!!

Razza - for a good discussion on pH, nute lock-outs and how to correct them, check out this thread, Another pH Question. Although the heat problem isn't the same, there some real good advice from knowledgeable growers about pH, lock-out and how to correct them.

The worst of that damage is scarring from pest munching, which looks even WORSE becuase of high temps.
I'm not sure if you can apply 'Bang!' this late in flower, but it's meant to heal over mite scars and protect your plants from what you are seeing.
-
Purps Five weeks into 12.12
Damn Razza, lol, we didn't realize you were so cruel to your plants.... :D

Just released a butt load of lady bugs in there, hopefully this helps out the mite problem. A\C unit goes in tonight or tomorrow as well.
Here is my question now:
I am putting in a window a\c unit. I'm going to put ply wood over the entire window except for the area that the a\c unit is and then put a tapestry in between the wood and the outside so it looks like a tapestry. As of right now my fresh air is coming from under the door to the room but I put a towel there to prevent the lady bugs from coming out as they might wish to. =)
Will the a\c unit now provide the path of least resistence for fresh air coming into the room? I am not an expert on a\c units but I am assuming it pulls air from outside and conditions it and then pushes it into the room.

I just read some information on the net that said you need TEN THOUSAND lady bugs to eat the mites if you have webbing on your plants. Coming from a lady bug dealer, I am guessing that number is quite inflated. In any case, I hope my lady bugs mate ASAP!
Most of them are chilling in the top soil, not much action towards the top of the buds... is this normal? I'm guessing loads of eggs are in my soil...YIKES.

Most ACs will recirculate the room air over the cooling coils, so they don't actually introduce fresh air. It's more efficient to keep cooling the same air than it is to pull fresh warm air in from outside. Remember, most folks run their AC when it's hotter outside than in.
The window units that I own have a vented/ non-vented selection lever, but they aren't young- I don't know if more modern units still have these.
I suspect that your ladybugs are hanging out low, under your canopy because it's too hot for them up by the lamp. They'll eat once it cools down some.
You need 10,000 ladybugs to clean up how large an area? Commercial floriculture is rarely expressed in units of square feet. Certainly you need a bunch of bugs, but 10,000 seems like a lot.
Ya gotta drop your temps,man.

Just went and saw Sicko, and boy is that movie sickening for lack of a better word. I highly reccomend it to anyone, not just Americans... the way the movie is presented is both respectable and realistic.. some of his other films are overly dramatic.
Anyhow, got home....six hours after putting the lady bugs in there... every single one is either dead or well on its way. Not a single lady bug on the plants when I arrived home, all dieing on the ground. I did spray with insecticide soap a few days ago.. maybe thats it. Well, back to putting the a\c unit....will update thurs.
-
Purps Five weeks into 12.12
So as I already said the lady bugs all died, perhaps from the heat...perhaps from the insectiside soap I sprayed about 2-3 days ago? I am going to bomb the hell outta that room early tomorrow morning, and then try to introduce more lady bugs a few days after that. Will this work?
After a long night of work (and not quite finishing until now) the a\c unit is installed into ply wood that is covering the window. Unfortunately, I could not seal the ply would real well last night at about 3am so I put plastic over it to prevent light leaks this am.
That didn't work... the plastic fell off, and a light leak was exposed for about three-four hours this am. I used my light meter and it hardly moved when I put it near the plants...so I am wishing, and praying that it didn't fuck these ladies up. What y'all think? I'll post pictures real soon gotta get back to work.

In this thread someone mentioned that you should give them some water in a small dish with some pebbles. So it might be that they need water to survive, and maybe even moreso if it's pretty hot there like you're saying.
I'd wait for an opinion from one of the experienced growers though, I'm just learning. Anyways, good luck on it. Hope you can keep those mites out.
-
Purps Five weeks into 12.12
I'd strong think introducing some sort of insect or bug into a room with insecticide or bug killer anywhere in it would be a bad idea on general priniciples.
-
Purps Five weeks into 12.12
Yeah I just woulda thought that the soap would have evaporated by now with the high heat in there... perhaps not? Would I need to wash the plants off manually in order to introduce my lady bugs? Maybe just wait a few more days? What ya guys think? I was looking foward to that army taking care of business for me. =)

Purps Five weeks into 12.12
I dropped the bomb on them.... BABY! I dropped the bomb on them....
DIE BUGS DIE. Hope this one takes well.... only have like two weeks left until harvest so let's see how it works out.

Bugs are dead as far as I can tell right now (though I bet some of those fuckers have made their way to the carpet where they re-group to plan a detailed plan on how to attack me next!!!) Well, they better be prepared for my a\c, bc that room is 10 degrees cooler than it ever was... BRING IT FUCKERS! lol

Purps Five weeks into 12.12
OOPS. One of the timers came on 12 minutes too early today, I turned it off a few minutes after it came on though, and then set the timer the correct way - hopefully not a big deal. At least these ladies are coming down within 2 weeks so it doesn't give the full time to develope seeds if I did confuse them.
Bugs are gone, plants are looking wonderful. They really are enjoying the cool temps in there I think too. They just look like they have thickened up pretty nicely over the last week or so.
I have a question for you guys... so some of my plants are already showing amber trichs. I've done this growing thing before, and I know different people harvest at different times according to what type of high they want... but when the trichs turn amber does that mean the plant is also done growing?
Is it realistic that once they are all pretty darn cloudy, with some being amber (this is when I usually harvest) that they are going to pack on more weight? I'm just confused because this is supposed to be an eight week strain, yet I'm seeing some of the plants that look almost ready now... if not within a week for sure.
