I do smoke cigarettes, but this thread isn't for me. It's about my best friend. She's 16 almost 17 and has been smoking since she was 11. We only met like 2 years ago if that. When she was younger, she had spinalchord cancer, and to this day she has metal rods in her back. Her mom is going through kemo right now due to bladder cancer (caused by cigarettes!). My friend is a very heavy smoker. And she knows, as do I, that if she continues this smoking, her cancer could come back. Seeing as how she's been smoking for 5 years now, it's not so easy to just quit. And there's nothing I can really do or say to make her quit. I've brought it up a few times and said that she should really stop, that we both should. And we've set dates that 'on this day we're gonna quit smoking'... never have. I know I can if I wanted to, but her, I don't think she can. And her family history of cancer isn't good at all, not to mention that she's already had it and is now at a higher risk of it coming back if she keeps it up. Anyway, I really don't know what to do. She is my best friend, and I want the best for her. But when it comes down to it, I guess there really isn't any way to MAKE someone stop smoking. I just wish she would TRY. I really don't know what to do... and if something does happen to her in the future... I'm gonna feel like it's my fault, like I didn't do anything. Idk... :(

I did consider that. I think it might work too... I'll try n give it a shot, not gonna be easy but she's my best friend and I know she'd do it for me... not to get all sentimental on ya... lol

Once she sees that you were able to quit, tell her that you have faith in her power to do the same. She won't be able to unless she believes she can do it. It's all about attitude. The moment you say, "I can't", you invite failure.

Quit with her and be a support, if she's a very heavy smoker, like weedhound said they have pills. Otherwise, buy some patches or gum, and keep a bag of suckers around, part of the addiction is the oral fixaion of having a ciggarette in your mouth, keeping suckers around helps conquer that. It helped me when I was quitting. Now I only smoke socially or when im drinking, which is usually in social situations.

my dad finally quit smoking after years of my bitching. he bought some nicorette and he says it actually works really well. its been a couple weeks and he said the gum really does kill the craving.
i would suggest buying the gum and going to her with the idea of both of you quitting together. do it right away because if you don't its only ever gonna be an idea.
the hardest thing is just starting, so dont waste anymore time and do it RIGHT NOW. not in a week or when this packs out or whatever, just get that shit over with.

Personally I would not use nicorette. When I quit smoking sigs, I quit cold turkey. Yes, it's a bitch. But quitting that nicorette is going to be just as much of a bitch once you get to that point. After the first week or two the physical withdrawal symptoms will be gone. That's the hardest part to go through. But if I was able to do it, so can you.

Cold turkey. That's the only way I know that works. I agree with ghosty and hippiegirl. A quitting buddy really helps. Been looking for one of those for a while. Everybody I hang out with smokes and none of them seem to wanna quit all that bad. Starting at 11 has already done serious damage. She needs some kind of example. Especially at her current age, she's likely to set the rest of her life on what peers do for the next few years. I recommend anybody quit smoking. I fucking hate cigarettes with a passion. But can't quit. My biggest mistake in life by a long shot. Good luck with your friend and hopefully yourself too. However it turns out, it's not your fault. Everybody is at their own fault for smoking despite the advice shoved in your face every damn where. I kinda also blame the government for keeping them legal at all.

Yes, you can. Believe it, and then you'll be able to. It worked for me, after smoking for years.
Unless someone else is holding a gun to your head and making you smoke, you can quit. It's just a matter of willpower.
And contrary to popular belief, willpower isn't something that some people naturally have more or less of than other people. Willpower is a choice. The more you choose to exercise it, the stronger it will get.

Willpower may be exactly the problem here. I know I can quit if I really wanted. But idk if she has the willpower TO quit. And like I said, in the end there's nothing you can really do. I'm sorry for skipping the whole thread. I understand tobacco's addictive but it's mind over matter, when it comes down to quitting. Yea I know some people "can't" end certain "addictions" but I've witnessed -many- overcome -most- so I also know it's possible.

Why would it be your fault? Don't think like that. You need to stay positive most of all for her even if you do or don't quit. You sound like a very dedicated friend, just be sure not to TELL her to quit because then she will feel like she has lost power in your twos relationships, remember best friends think of them selfs as being equal. But im not sure if that you stop smoking it will help much, because it sounds like she smokes more then you do. (not sure if im right here). But if thats the case your jsut going to have to have a heart to heart talk to her, maybe do some research on the cancer that could come back. And get some pictures of what her insides will look like. Make sure you let her know your here to help and not judge her. Make sure she knows you love her, and would never let her down intentionally. I have helped friends off drugs, and its hard work. you have to be consistent with it and follow through. if you decided to quit with her make sure your not sneaking a cigg, because if you end up catching her in the act you cannot say anything.. But most of all this is your best friend you know her better then most. You know how addicted she is, and you know the way her mind thinks. Honey, you need to quit NOW! Whether or not your friend quits, is HER choice- the best you can do, is to quit for your own health's sake and set a good example for her to follow! You are not ultimately responsible for the actions of others. You can influence others, but we all make our own choices and we must live (or die) with them!

Back when I was a biology major in college, one of the profs told us this one- a single drop of nicotine, placed on a rabbit's ear, will kill the rabbit in less than 24 hours (we were discussing absorption of chemicals through the skin).
I use tobacco to kill ants and other garden pests. Tobacco dust was a major pesticide before chemical pesticides hit the market. It is still available in some nurseries, even today.

And as a final argument against tobacco- I firmly believe it gets in the way of getting high. The surfaces of your lungs need to be clean to work right. Tobacco leaves nasty tar and smoke particles on your lungs. THC needs to come in contact with lung tissue to be absorbed. If a THC molecule hits a bit of ash or tar, will it be in contact with lung tissue? Nope! So tobacco gets in the way of your high!
