It seems we are having a rash of noobs boldly answering questions that they themselves don't really know the answers to.

It's getting to be a pain sorting out the good advice based on long experience, education, research, etc. from the absolute bullshit, the origin of which is best pointed out by a doctor with a flashlight.

As we are short a couple moderators in the grow section, this stuff is getting out of hand.

I am going on the record to discourage it. I'm not mentioning any names, but I've tried nicely to point this out to the worst offenders... my patience is getting REALLY low.

If you don't definitively know the answer to something, either SAY SO in your reply, or keep your mouth shut.

People with serious questions deserve serious answers, not bullshit.

Considering that this is a for-profit web site, it seems to me like the owners should get serious about this Mod thing and get a Mod over here. Otherwise, this site will soon turn into nothing more than a bunch of idiots jerking each other off. IMHO

imo, this will always be a problem. many folks will read something, then assume they are masters of the information. thanx stinky, for pointing it out, but all in all, people should cross refference everthing. like my gramps says, beleive none of what you hear and only half of what you see.

every internet user is responsible for sifting out truth from error. The fundamental nature of the internet denotes that there is a vast amount of info that is purely incorrect. The best way around it seems to glean info from various sources on the same subject, on this site and on others. Any reasoning person will have the ability to polarize truth from bullshit. It's important to never be satisfied with an answer until you've exhausted all apparent sources.

Which leads to the question of who is worse...the person who gives out bullshit or the person who takes it?

Exactly! When I joined this site it was because I was looking for information but I sure the hell didn't just leave that to this site alone. If your gonna do something investigate it as much as possible. Computor searches, books, sites, etc.......learning is knowledge.

i am a relatively new grower, and i enjoy sharing what little experiences and advice i can. All advice should be taken with a grain of salt (thats the expression, right?), and compared with others.

I am merely offering my helping hand and my slightly pinkish-green thumb for any who trust it and whose knowledge may complement my own for thier benefits

Don't you understand that no one wants to hear your drivel? The Grow Section isn't here for your amusement; it's here for people to get solid advice from experienced growers.

Thanks man. I appreciate it. I think that you just might want to put i couple of disclaimers in your replies, like "IMO," or "I think," or "....but don't take my word for it."

This is just in case you don't know what your talkin' about, and somebody else decides to take your advice. What if your advice kills their plant? You make not only yourself look stupid, but also the forum itself.

As for myself, I hope that I have done a good job of helping others out when possible. I like to think that I have some 'beyond basic' knowledge; with 2 successful outdoor grows, and 1 1/2 indoor grows. :o

P.S.: I really can't help but to think that I may be considered one of these 'n00bs' as you guys have put it. If so, just let me know, please!

ok..thats getting harsh. its true i have not yet harvested my current crop of 4 girls in thier 4th week, and my previous girl (bless her soul) was left in veg rediculously long and overwatered in preparation for a long weekend away fro the house.

I have learned from both my past mistakes and current success and believe myself to be an increasingly competent grower who wishes to share his advice.

I've just started posting here, so I may be one of the people referred to. Hope not.

One of the reasons I started posting here is that I saw so much incredible misinformation. It's not the fault of the mods or good posters as far as I can see--it's pretty clear who has their s*** together. The problem is what happens a lot on message boards...a lot of questions posted by people who

a) Don't know basics.
b) Don't read clearly identified FAQs/important stuff.
c) Ask questions that have been answered 1000 times in the last year and/or can;'t be answered at all. ("Im growing two bagseed plants. what do u think I will yeild?")

After a while, it must get pretty tiring for the good posters seeing the same basic questions asked over...and over...and over. I'd get tired of answering too. I'm a mod on a (totally different) web site's message board. Same thing. So a lot of the people that do respond to these questions give wildly inaccurate or not-very-helpful answers.

I think some of it is unintentional. I posted a fairly long post in indoor lighting about CFL and HPS lumens vs. watts for newbie growers, because I've seen so many people talk about watts without knowing what they are or how they're different depending on lighting type. I'm old--relatively speaking--so I know enough to keep it simple. Lumens are more accurate than watts for figuring out light needs. Use reflectors when possible so you use the light you've got instead of just throwing in more lights/heat/stress. Paint walls white or use mylar. Have good ventilation, etc. A very nice poster responded with a cut-and-paste about PAR watts. It was technically right...but few lights list PAR watts, it's not markedly more accurate than just using lumens (which pretty much everyone lists), and it's next to impossible for people outside the U.S. to get that sorta info. I tried to respond politely--most of the questions in that particular thread are by people growing in small to medium size areas, and a lot of them get more lost than anything when you introduce something else into the equation. Like a couple of others, I'm trying to offer small, practical advice where it seems necessary.

It's got to be a pain for mods to try and respond to Every. Damn. Stupid. Question. And it's just as painful to watch lousy information go out. At a certain point, though, it's the responsibility of the individual to take charge of his/her education...there are certainly enough stickies and clearly named topics to get a mildly motivated person started. It's not like "Grow FAQs" or "*** PLEASE READ AND GOOGLE SEARCH BEFORE POSTING A QUESTION ***" are confusing. Seems to me that given the amount of, uh. stuff that the mods have to wade through, they do a good job. Just my long winded .02.

In all seriousness, if people with the attitude, "I can say anything I want, regardless of if it is true or false, because the reader should know better than to believe what I say." are allowed to freely post their misinformation all over the Grow Section, CanCom will lose its credibility as a legitimate information source.

And it's certainly not fair to say "the reader should use Google" because quite often Google will bring you right back here to CanCom. CanCom is, after all, one of THE most authoritative sources for up-to-date information on marijuana cultivation in the entire world. ...but ya can't keep that reputation with the attitude that people should know better than to believe what they read here or by allowing assclowns to spread misinformation all over the Grow Section. There are plenty of places to play on this forum, the Grow Section just shouldn't be one of them.

Anyway, some of the worst offenders at the moment are downright trolls - constantly being offensive or confrontational or giving totally BS advice. Just doing trollish stuff to try to get a rise out of anyone they can.

Roughrider, I respect your opinions and your intentions. I just feel there's only one way to deal with trolls and fools, and that's to be done with them.

I love the quote about the man wiht a thousand plants. I spend my Saturdays quite often at a local specialty garden shop interrogating the owner about grow technique and plant diseases... lol... I used to make a living as a greenhouse technician in a hydroponic facility... I feel as if I STILL don't know squat in the big scheme of things.

If you aren't certain of your response, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not post as if you are. PLEASE say, "I'm not certain, BUT....". It will help smooth ruffled feathers and avoid confusion.

All right here my rant begins as well. I'll make it short. (ha ha) You are indeed responsible for your own actions and information that you find. Cross check and double check everything. It's the internet for god's sake.

That said, I have to agree with PC here. There's quite a difference between those really trying to help and others who treat everyone as their own private amusement game. There are folks who have spend a LOT of time, energy and money on their grow and want to do the right thing. I feel they deserve more than some selfish ignoramus cruising the boards making up things to say as they go.....some of which can destroy all of one's hard work if such advice were actually to be taken...which (and I found this QUITE interesting) doesn't seem to matter in the least to them despite their claims that they love growing and only want to help.

Ultimately.....all this IS a reflection of Cdot.

Sure, I'm in favor of banning rude people or people who consistently give incorrect information on this or any board. And I'm all about letting people figure it out on their own, or with as little repetition as possible of the same answer over and over. That's why I mentioned the stickied threads, which are largely terrific...and, unfortunately, don't get read as often as they should. But that's the bigger problem, IMO...how to separate the obvious peckerheads from people who honestly want to learn but are clueless. Wish there was an easy answer. Don't think there is. But, in general, it seems like the mods here put up with it pretty well.
