Brown becomes British prime minister
LONDON - Former Treasury chief Gordon Brown became British prime minister Wednesday, promising a new government with new priorities, after Tony Blair resigned to end a decade in power.
Power changed hands traditionally and quietly behind closed doors in Buckingham Palace as Blair first met Queen Elizabeth II to resign, and Brown arrived soon after to be confirmed as the new prime minister.
"This will be a new government with new priorities," Brown told reporters outside his Downing Street office minutes later. "I've been privileged with the great opportunity to serve my country."
An emotional Blair submitted his resignation and traveled to his constituency in northern England, where he is expected to quit as a lawmaker and take up a post with the Quartet of Mideast peace mediators.
Brown, a 56-year-old Scot known for his often stern demeanor, beamed as he was applauded by Treasury staff before heading with his wife, Sarah, to the palace to be confirmed as prime minister.

A Scot as the Prime Minister? Looking for some feedback from some of our friends from overseas on this one. Has this ever been done in the past? Will this create more of a say for Scottish agendas in Parliment?

Tony Bliar is Scottish. I think there have been quite a few others too. From an article I already posted by George Galloway, who is also Scottish, and was banned from the Labour party for his stance on the Iraq war.
"But the clue is in the N word. Normal. Brown, who follows Bonar Law, Campbell-Bannerman, Ramsay MacDonald, Harold Macmillan, Sir Alec Douglas- Home and Tony Blair into No.10 as a British premier of Scots descent (not bad for an OPPRESSED small nation) is no normal man."

Cool! LOL...I was hoping you'd reply on this. Not being from there I really had NO clue at all on the issue.
So what's your feelings about Brown?

So, is this a case of "meet the new boss, same as the old boss"?

Thanks, I think they're gettin on in years. It may have been my funky computer speakers, but in the first half they sounded a little off key. I saw them live in long beach or LA somewhere in the late 60s early 70s, I was a little wasted at that concert.

Well, the first thing he did to annoy me was introduce the IR35 clause for contractors, the year I started my first contract.
IR35 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Instead of starting my own business and getting loads of tax breaks, I ended up having two choices. Accept the fact that it's going to be nearly impossible for me to think of reasons to get the same tax breaks contractors used to be entitled to and pay the same tax as everyone else, or avoid the head-ache of having to work out my yearly accounts and get paid through an agency. It worked out about the same. So, the tax break I should have got to cover me through such times when companies have their all too frequent get-rid-of-all-the-contractors-because-our-share-price-is-falling sprees, effectively went into the pockets of accountants. My job was a damned sight more technical than there's is, and for that matter a lot less secure it turned out.
All the rest of my tax money was pissed away on this kind of shit

Amongst other things...
Single mothers and OAP's love him though, because he did a lot for them, but unfortunately at the same time he did fuck all for single white males such as ME:D. I'm now currently involved in a legal battle with the student Loans Company, whom I borrowed money from during university vacations, because the government stopped students from receiving benefits when they were not studying not long after the introduction of the poll tax. It was the tories idea to start phasing out student grants, and Blair and Brown carried on with it as part of their industrialisation/expansion/destruction of the countries prolific and long standing academic foundations.
Luckily I got out with not too much debt, and it looks as though I am winning the battle against them. I view any debt to the SLC, a private organisation, as a stealth tax, something that Gordon Brown was very adept at sneaking in as well throughout his tenure. A few years ago in Scotland the Lib Dems were succesful in having student grants reinttroduced in Scotland.
As a leader, he not going to legalise cannabis, nor is he going to pull the troops out of Iraq. As chancellor of the exchequor he carried on the tradition of raising the taxation on alcohol each year.
As well as all that he's a boring twat. So I don't like him. He might be clever, but he is a neo-conservative clever clogs. It doesn't make him intelligent.

Hopefully this one will actually have the interests of the British people in mind, and won't deepthroat America's cock like the last one.

Gordon Brown takes it up the arse, apparently.

Brown looks as dodgy as Blair was. There is no way Gordon brown will ever have the balls to takle the cannabis issue in the uk.He did do a lot for the hospitals ans was quite shrood with the money but i think that was because he didnt trust blair with it either.I dont see him being a good PM actually i havent ever seen any politition that looks to know what he or her are talking about .Its all about ego with them they start of with all these great ideas then fuck the poor and worst off up the a** .It always seems to be the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.Staurm i think George Galloway was kicked out the labour party becuase he is insane his antics with saddam and rula lenski proved that.I still cringe when i hear my cat purr.dave

Hearing a lot of discomfort in people about Gordon Brown on the radio. Whilst half the country is under water, he and Blair are poncing around London in their second coming, resurrecting old promises. Gordon is going to makes changes! It's the start of a new era again, he is going to do it right this time.
Not that it'll make any bloody difference I suppose, but I think in the name of democracy he should call an election immediately and prove to us that he has our support, instead of just fucking assuming it by default. If there is no leader to challenge him, the country should decide if he alone is good enough.
Why is he so popular? Is he really so popular? You just need a few people going around saying, oh yeah but I like Gordon Brown, its just that nasty Tony Blair I don't like, and before you know it everyone has resigned themselves to the fact he is going to be the next leader.
I once questioned someone on that, what is it about Gordon Brown you like? I dunno, I just like him, was the answer. Nobody fucking knows, he is just a nice man, not too cocky like Tony Blair.
Aside from pishing our money away on shite, he is credited with the longest unhidered economic growth since, I can't remember, predating the tories or something. BUT, is it perhaps not just the case that the man simply inheritted the right economic starting point, what with the IT bubble and all that the economy was probably going to do alright anyway?
And if the economy is in such great shape, where's my frigging job then eh?
Under Gordon Brown the amount of tax we all pay through everything, when calculated, has risen by a staggering 10p in the pound since they came to power 10 years ago! And what has this country received back in return, fuck all!

Great, another Marxist Scotsman taking control of England. I wonder how far he can take this country up Americas arse. Can he beat Tony Bliar's record?
END THE UNION
Brown becomes British prime minister
He only assumed the position because nobody challenged him, so they were unable to have a vote. But aren't people allowed to abstain, or spoil their vote, in an election? Surely this should still have gone to a vote, and if he failed to get more than 50% of a turn out then it is time for a general election.
Brown becomes British prime minister
If there was an election it wouldn't make any difference as Labour would get straight back in. The Conservatives are similar to where labour were in 80s and 90s, split (as a party) on most issues, bereft of ideas on policies and have no clear manifesto. They offer little or no effective opposition as shadow government, so are in no fit state to govern, the absolute best they could hope for would be a hung parliament, which nobody wants.
