Are edibles/teas/etc. more efficient than smoking?
I'm a new medical marijuana patient in California, and I've wanted to try to make some teas but every recipe I find asks for a lot. Even if it only calls for low grade stuff, for one serving that's still far more than if I were to be smoking it!
I always thought cooking with cannabis was a far more efficient method of getting high, or am I completely wrong with that assumption? Most of the recipes I've read call for anywhere from a gram to an 8th or more, and it doesn't look like in the end they serve much more than a single serving. Even when using lower quality bud that's a lot of money for just a one time use!
Is there something I'm missing here? Most of the recipes don't actually say how many they serve, but I usually assume just one. I'm smoking on a daily basis and I know that is not healthy so I'd rather make it into tea, but if it is less efficient I can't do it.

i usually smoke up to 3 grams a session. thats not that much bud. with around 4 grams you can make decent brownies or, what i do, cupcakes.

so do you get more or less high than if you had smoked it? I'm not really looking for a longer or more intense high, just a healthier method of using it. I don't have money for a vaporizer, and I figured eating it would be best way anyway. But for me 3 grams is a lot, it takes me weeks to go through an 8th...so thats why im wondering if the high last longer or if people are just getting more fucked up because they are using so much more mary j than if they were just smoking it.
I've never eaten it by the way, so I'm excited to try something, but at the same time I don't want to over use what I got cause it wasn't cheap!

Dude, one gram is a joint.
and yes, eating gets you much different high than smoking, and i find it more intense.

eating cannabis baked into food takes time, precision and attention to detail. You need to use a cheesecloth, mix things up, mince the weed, bake, blah blah blah.
step 1: put weed in pipe
step 2: light weed
step 3: inhale smoke
step 4: be high
step 5: oh wait, there is no step 5 you're done.
Smoking weed is much more efficient. Ingesting cannabis takes longer and gives you a "body high" similar to pills and many other things that are taken orally. Smoking takes effect instantly since the bronchioles in your lungs are a direct pathway into your blood stream hence faster and a different kind of high.
If you want the healthy way, vaporize
If you want the fast way, smoke a pipe
If you want the long, more wasteful way, make cannabutter and bake it into something.
Your choice.

eating or baking weed into something is more healthy than smoking but also a lot more wasteful. you can burn through it faster through food. It gives you a much longer high and different high. the high can be like smoking a good indica, or even give you out of body experiences. but if your looking for that kind of high try pills and peyote cactus. Smoke your weed dude

My mom has told me since i started smoking, get me three knee high plants, and i;ll get you two pounds of butter.
I didn't even think that there would be much thc in a knee high plant, but wtv.

If it takes you weeks to go through an eight (3.5g) then I doubt you are doing that much damage to your lungs
However, the most economical option for you is the vaporizer and here is why:
If you cook with weed you will likely use 3.5g per cooking session! So much more weed than you use now and that will mount up quickly in $$$ If you were buying say an eight every few days...
If you vaporize then you will need the same amount of weed (or less) as you smoke now - so an eighth will still last you ages :). Investing in a vaporizer (even something like a Volcano) will pay for itself in saved bud and healthy peace of mind. Plus you can still smoke on occassion and not feel so bad :)
The added bonus is you can even bake the left-over vaporized remains and get high again! Just grind them up into a simple brownie mix and go for it - the weed was already heated (and therefore decarboxylated) so it will work once in the mix. They won't be mega-strong but there should be up to 30% of the thc/cbd in there still.
The Volcano is about $390 on ebay (new) and as it is a patented medical device it might be a better option for a med patient ;) If there is a club you can go to and try one out just do it.
Good luck

The other option for you might be Green Dragon - it is a tincture so you need some high quality alcohol but it basically makes a simple high potency drink.
With a dropper you could add it to almost anything making it an easy-dose system.

hmm, well I think I'll wait to do any cooking until I start growing my own stuff, because it'd cost me way too much right now. I'd love one of those volcano vaporizers but I think a decent bong will tide me over for a while....I'm just getting sick of my pipe really fast!

Based on what I've read on this site, 1 gram of weed will get the average person high for 6-10 hours if eaten in brownies or drunk in pot chocolate or whatnot.
I'm an easybake, but at a bowl a day, 1 gram will last me a week and a half - that's over 20 hours of being high. That's much better value from where I'm standing.

yea I'm a bowl a day here too, would go 2 or 3 bowls a day but I can't be high at my work. I'm glad I'm such a lightweight, this last 8th ran me $75 bucks, if I went through as much as some of you guys here I couldn't afford to NOT grow my own.
Well damn, I hope I stay a lightweight for some time lol

From what your saying about how much you use, you should try making some sort of edible.
Everyone's different, and if you make it right, cooking can be pretty efficient.
Try a firecracker with a bowl's worth of weed (.25 g)
If you don't know what a firecracker is follow this site
Cannacrackers - step by step recipe by kisps
The first time I got stoned I used .25g of weed and I was way too high for about 12 hours.
Now I would only ever start out with .1 g of weed because I have no tolerance.
Use the same amount you would smoke into a firecracker (oven and natural peanut butter) and compare for yourself.

I was thinking about making those but it sounds disgusting. I know some people say they like the taste, but I personally can't imagine cooked peanut butter tasting good lol.
What about tea? All the tea recipes seem to ask for a lot of weed, and I couldn't tell how much that was supposed to make. I might just take one of those recipes and use a bowls worth rather than what they ask for and see what happens

Eating/drinking cannabis is wasteful... once i did some green dragon, an amount enough for one dose (weed worth of 1.5 joint), but then thought better and, instead drink this green dragon, i evaporated the alcohol and made hash oil. The amount of hash oil was enough for some 15 times smoking... Since that day i never cooked/drinked with weed again, cause ive realized the great waste it would be.
I dont believe weed teas can be effective... the THC is not water soluble, so all the THC will remain in the weed, and you will be drinking only weed-flavored water... you must use something containing fats (milk, peanut butter, cheese, etc) which dissolve the THC, or another suitable solvent, as alcohol in the green dragon.

Ive never seen a pot tea recipe that didnt have milk of some form in it.

when cannabis is ingested the THC is metabolized by an enzyme in the liver --THC becomes a stronger molecule which is why eating marijuana is much more powerful than smoking it. when you smoke marijuana something like 1/2 of the THC is destroied by the direct flame--it also goes to the lungs, directly into the blood so it's not metabolized in the liver.

Impossible a bowl a day and a gram lasting a week and a half? I could never do that... I smoke around a couple grams a day sometimes only 1 if i just pack bowls but I like smoking out of blunts

I cook firecrackers at 320F for 20 minutes. It tastes like a peanut butter cracker sandwich. Cooking doesn't alter the taste except to give it a slight roasted flavor. I think most people just overcook them, and those are the ones that taste bad.

I think I will try making firecrackers....especially after my disastrous results of this tea/chocolate milk I made....
Ok...so how did that chocolate drink thing turn out? Well....I really think adding butter was a dumb idea because once it cooled down...the entire drink became a disgusting solid. I was expecting just some film floating on top to scoop off with a spoon....but no, I turned the cup upside down and this goup still wasn't moving!! I poked it with the spoon and the whole thing was slushy as if frozen....but it wasn't frozen.
So yea, I didn't even try drinking....err, eating that drink lol COMPLETE FAILURE! lol What did I do wrong? I'm thinking the butter was a big reason, but could I have also heated the milk too warm? Was letting it cool down a bad idea? I'd like to try again, but I don't wanna screw it up again. Told you guys I was retarded when it comes to cooking, if there aren't microwavable instructions I'm almost always going to have problems hehe
So I'm thinking next time skip the butter and only have the milk, get the glass jar as suggested, and get a grinder because I really need it ground up better if I don't want to be pulling chunks out when its done.
My question: Is cooling it safe? Or is it better to drink warm? Any tips or suggestions would be welcomed, thanks!

hands down eating weed is much much more potent than smoking it. Alot of ppl will say this is not true... thats just because they are making a mistake in their cooking some where. 2 days ago I did the final test to see if eatging was more efficient than smoking. I took 1 gram and cooked it into a firecracker with organic peanut butter(the right kind of pb goes a long way! skiipy, jef will not work! or work well) anwyays after i cooked the fire cracker i was baked within 30 mins and really high after an hour. Then the next day I smoked a 1 gram blunt.... just got a buzz and was no where near as strong as the cracker the day b4... the only downside to cooking is that its easy to mess up and dosent work all the time and when it does work it works fucking fantastic... even better if u smoke right when the edibles kick in and ull be on ur ass! Heres a few things that help when making edibles... do not smoke until the edibles kick in... and have an empty stomach. Wait 2 hours after indigestion to see if the edibles worked or not..... but yea eating weed kicks ass!

I make brownies and cookies sometimes ... I pull the best buds off the plant, the rest goes into cooking stash ... when I manicure my buds, all of that goes into the stash, too, so my 'cooking stash' has plenty of small buds in it ... one cookie or brownie, takes about 2 hours to 'kick in', then lasts about 4 hours ... two brownies or cookies, just kick my ass for about 6 hours, a real 'day-ender' ... last night, I made some 'oatmeal/chocolate chip/peanut butter' cookies from my 'Willie Nelson' leftovers ... mmmm, like a spacey Reeses' Cup :giggity:

I notice a lot of people say eating it is a waste. I disagree. Maybe it's because a recipe may call for a 1/4 oz. in one pan of brownies. The good thing about firecrackers (which I am baking right now.) Is you can bake just one if you want. You only need about 1g, or even half of a gram, depending on tolerance and quality of course.
Also, from a lot of pictures I have seen, most firecrackers look overdone. I don't think it's necessary to wrap them in foil to keep the THC vapors in. As long as the weed is completely surrounded by peanut butter, vapors can't escape through it, can they?
I think people overcook them, because they are afraid of not getting all the THC into the peanut butter, or they because they usually set their weed on fire, they are just have that mentality.
