Anyone able to explain this?

A mate of mine spent out on 10 Blueberry seeds a while back.
He paid quite a lot for them as he bought feminised seeds.
He has planted 3, and i have planted 2.
Out of the 5 planted, they all germinated fine and were all in similar conditions.
But, 3 turned out to be what i can only call mutants!!
Is this what happens when science is played with too much, or is this a common occurance that i just havent seen before?
The first pic is one of the two mutants my mate ended up with.
The second and third pic are of the two i planted at the same time.
The fourth pic is the successful Blueberry i had. It is now about 6 weeks from seed and i have topped it. The sex is unknown, but fingers crossed the feminised seeds were worth the money. especially as so far a 40% seed success rate isnt too good.

Those all appear to be in the same soil, right? What is the soil? It LOOKS pretty good to me actually but is it pre-ferted?
Did your friend get 'mutants' too? Oh wait reread durrr... so EACH of you got at least one mutant and at least one normal plant?
My first instinct is to say there's something WRONG with those seeds. Sure the leaves can look kind of like that under certain abuse conditions, BUT a couple things!
-they are not consistent
-one of the mutants has really WRONG looking cotyledons, FAR longer than normal.

Hmmmmmm you tried to pop all the seeds and only got 40% germ?

low germ rate.... weird but inconsistent mutations... I almost want to say that either the seeds or the parent plant was exposed to a chemical that it shouldn't have been. Colchichine would cause that but the germ rate would be even lower (REALLY low, you could even see NO germ from a pack of 10) and you would probably not end up with 'normal' plants... feminized seeds are often make with giberellin treatment (the average home grower shoudl stick to interrupting the light regimen!!!!!)... something is pretty fucked up and I would be calling the company demanding NON FEMINIZED replacement beans. Who did you get them from if I may ask?

I dont think its a soil issue but couldnt be 100% about it. Apart from picture 2 and picture 3 were two identically treated plants. Both germinated the same in soil. Both came up out of the soil the same day, and both had normal first leaves (whatever they are called, lol). It all looked wrong as the 2nd leaves appeared, though for a short while i continued to treat them identically.

When i realised 1 wasnt going to do much, i just left it on my windowsill. The other one has had most of its time under cfl's, but the last 5 days under a 600w hps. The pics will show the difference, lol..

It wasnt 40% germinated Stinky, they all germinated. It was 40% of the 5 germinated that ended up normal :)

They are both the same age, but for the last 3 weeks, the nice one had special treatment :)

That's some bizarre looking plants....looks like you stuck them in a microwave or something. I've tried some female seeds and ended up with some issues as well....50% success rate I'd say......they all germed but one died young and one was such a poor grower id have to call it useless. The other two did very well with a good yield. I've got two female seeds of different types going right now....ones a blueberry.....and the BB looks great and the other looks like crap. Dont really know what the deal is.

But BOTH plants were treated the same, so what ive used to grow them in seems, in my opinion, not an issue? Im not disputing by the way, cos i freely admit i dont know :)

My mates 3 seeds were all identically treated too, and he had one successful seed with 2 mutants.

So thats 2 different methods used to grow these blueberry seeds (my mate and i dont do things the same) and both have given mutant results and successful results? lol.

Just grow them out and see what comes of it. How is the lighting? How often do you water? Why don't you help them form a little. . .A little LST won't hurt lol


Edit: looking at the pics more, that dirt looks kinda dense. Would that effect it?

I dont still have the bag, but will try to find out what it was. It came from a hydro shop.
The soil looks dense, but i assure you it isnt. If i water from the top, it drains straight through and is subsequently taken from below.
I will keep it alive, but think it will end up like the last one i kept going, a pic of which is at the top of the thread. Its the mutant with loads of leaves. It never got any taller, but bushed out some more with dodgy leaves. I let it die eventually, but wont do that with this one, just to be curious :)
