Florida moved up its primary yesterday to January, throwing the speeded-up election calendar into new chaos and forcing Democratic hopefuls to face punishment for stumping there.

"We will be the first megastate to weigh in on the next leader of the free world," crowed Gov. Charlie Crist as he set the Sunshine State's primary for Jan. 29, 2008.

Florida's move set off a frenzied new round of leapfrog among states that want to weigh in early.

South Carolina GOP Chairman Katon Dawson vowed to reschedule his Feb. 2 primary to jump ahead of Florida.

"We're going to be the first in the South. Anything less than that is just not satisfactory," Dawson said.

He added, "We'll move it to Halloween if we have to."

The jockeying also sent New Hampshire into a tizzy. The state is determined to keep its traditional role of holding the first primary in the nation.

New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner stressed that he hasn't yet set a date for the Granite State primary, and said he won't until fall or even winter. Asked if voters might end up trekking to the polls as early as this year, he hesitated. "Well, I hope not," he said.

The whole presidential campaign for 2008 has been accelerated so much that voters will be picking their candidates far earlier than ever and the parties have been unable to bring order to the primaries.

Both parties will punish Florida for messing up the primary calendar by yanking half its delegates to the party conventions.

In an effort to protect South Carolina's primary, Democratic Party rules also spank candidates who campaign in Florida by assigning the Florida delegates to candidates who stay away.

That sets up the surreal possibility of a dark horse candidate like Mike Gravel - who can't afford to campaign in Florida anyway - "winning" the state's 210 delegates.

An early Florida primary favors candidates with money, and all the top contestants said they planned to campaign there.

A January headline touting a Florida victory would be worth more to them than a share of delegates at the party convention seven months later.

I don't think it matters if anyone in florida votes. The voting machines are sure to be rigged, after all Jeb Bush is the govenor, and we all know the Bushs' are crooks. I predict a narrow win by republicans in Florida even if no-one votes. Oh-yeah! Oh yeah! Oh yeah!

Someone better tell Charlie Crist that Jeb is still the governor....

Political banter is one thing P4B, but don't argue about this just for arguments sake. Lets keep things simple, I'm a Floridian. The fact of the matter is, the 2000 election in Florida stank to high heaven. And I'm not just refering to the confused greyhairs of South Florida or the pregnant chads in need of RU486.


It's a shame that any discussion on this is sure to devolve into bitter rants against the opposing party. But what else can one DO when the confronted with the realization of a poltical parties betrayal of the constitution. Not that this has not occured in the past and on both sides of the fence, but it now appears the norm instead of the exception. 2000 in Florida. 2004 Ohio.

To start with, I'm a Floridian. Have been all my life. That being said, the topic is still sore, even after these 7 progressively worse years. A prelude if you will to what this country was in store for.

Take one look at the sheer scale of the scandals that have plagued this Administration and ask yourself, Is this so far fetched? The lateset debacle to emerge from this administration is nothing less then the co-opting of the Department of Justice by hardline conservatives whose first loyalty is to the White House, not the constitution. I remember watching in disbelief as bus after bus packed with Bush fanatics arrived to "protest" the contested election. They raised hell on network tv, they chased an election official through the halls of a building on the pretext that he was "stealing votes." They were Floridians, and they wanted their voice to be heard. But they weren't. They didn't vote here.

Anyways, I'm at work and need to wrap this up. So here we go.

The Days of Gore refer to something that sadly wil never be. An America not mired in the bloody mess that is Iraq. Social programs instead of more tax cuts for the wealthy. An entire list of might have beens, had Florida not been stolen. Sure these seem far fetched, or more accurately the grousing of a political loser. But given what we know now, how could Al Gore be worse for America than "The Decider?"

Thank god Florida has opted for a paper trail for the next election. I don't think we could stand another fuck up... better make that Stand For.

since we're dwelling on fantasy here, let's just take a look at what would have happened had gore been elected. first we can start off with the tax hikes to pay for the standard do nothing social programs that the dems are constantly trying to foist off on us these days. increased payouts for the welfare rolls that would be swelling by leaps and bounds as businesses folded under the pressure of increased taxation and restrictions. a government run health care plan, so top heavy and poorly managed (as are all things this government sets its hand to) that american health care becomes the laughingstock of developed countries. a series of environmental and safety based initiative, sure to stifle economic growth and further decrease the number of civil liberties available to an already shackled citizenry.

then comes september eleventh and the most devastating attack on american soil in modern history. gore, in his whining wheedling way, sends stern warnings to no one in particular and assures the american people that matters are well in hand. shortly thereafter comes a second attack. now considered an easy target, the us can expect to be plagued by occasional terrorist threats until it is finally roused to attack its tormentors. the outcome is the same war in afghanistan, just a little too late to save the unknown number of civilian casualties killed and maimed in the domestic attacks.

now the good news. no invasion into iraq. saddam is left to his own devices and no american caskets are sent home from his sands - yet. considering the shifting alliances of the middle east, there is no telling who iraq might join with to strike out against the west. with time to consolidate and enhance his forces under the not so watchful eye of the un, what sort of mischief do you think he could manage to get up to. after years of belligerent hide and seek with international inspectors, he can be counted on to match or exceed the nuclear intentions of his iranian neighbors. then the fun begins in earnest.

of course, this is all fantasy and worst case scenario. i'm sure that the religious zealots would never harm us once they see our good intentions. i'm sure that iraq would have become a model citizen in the global community if only they had been given half a chance. i'm sure that the world would be roses and lollipops if only al gore were president.

I don't see how just living in a state makes a person an expert as to whether or not an election is rigged. Seems to me that Gore fought and cried his lil' eyes out and it got him nowhere. It's a republican state.....face the facts.

Well, if you stopped all the blacks and poor people from voting, most all states would be republican states! Repubes are most generally richer than the average bear. This comes from more education in the wiles of the world and the fact their parents usually gave them a good send off. If your dad was rich, you have about a 99% better chance of being rich than a regular person. What pisses me off are all the stupid fucking wannabees, they'll never be rich but they dream like Repubes, and get the world stuffed up their ass along with the rest of us.
