Question about intake?

Got a few cycles under my belt, but I am for the first time running into some temperature problems. Right now it's 81 in the room, trying to keep things down.

As of now I only have an open circuit that is taking warm air out of the room, through the lights, and into the attic via my Vortex fan. There is also a hole in the floor that would be perfect for pulling cold air in... is this the passive intake?

In a nut shell I am proposing that I attach some ducting to the whole in the floor which will bring cool air from outside into the room. I am a little nervous about loads of bugs coming in with the cool air, but I guess they would be sucked right through huh?

My question is would it work just to suck air from outside into the room and it then gets shot through the lights and into the attic. I am just unsure because I would assume you want that cool air *in* the room, not being pulled through by fan into the attic. Would I be better off just buying another fan (eech, gettin; broke here!) and sucking it from outside and into the room?

Put some type of air filter over or in the hole to keep bugs and crap out. If you release some negative pressure in the case it will make that fan more effecient and the colder intake will in effect cool the interior of the case as it passes through. The hot air doesn't just let the cold air slip by, it goes out first. :thumbsup:

And yes, that sounds like a passive intake. Without seeing it that is.

a screen will keep the bugs out but any intake to the room will move some air if you do not have an intake now you are probably not moving as much air through your lights as you could be.

I added a cheapo home dePOT duct booster fan to my passive intake, making it an active one, and a length of duct that directs the cool fresh air right in among the pots. Definitely an improvement, and a pretty inexpensive one.

81 is not high lol. :wtf:

If you had it in the high 90's I would be worried but 81 is definately not even worth altering. Been awhile since I've come here and there seem to be an awful lot of people thinking that temperatures above 80 is some kind of demon curse, absolutely not,... cannabis can withstand temperatures into the 100's WITHOUT significant risk of going hermi. Its just one of those misconceptions banded about as gospel truth.

Right now, I just am pushing the air into the attic and it's being sucked out of the room by an open circuit... no closed circuit at all. The air is then replaced from outside the room and a small amount from the hole in the flooring.

If the 600 watt is in a straight line as my other lights, then alls I need is duct connected to that hole in the flooring, correct?

I was under the impression you needed to not only suck air from outside, but also need to suck air out of the room. Can anyone elaborate a bit more?

It's 83 by the canopy right now, but I am guessing those temps will spike up quite a bit as the weather gets warmer around here.

No worry at all brother, just keep it below 90.

while 81 or 83 is perfectly fine would be starting to attempt to do something when temps got up to around 85 to keep them from going any higher and while plants may still grow at 90 degrees they do not do not grow their best at that temperature.
there is no reason to use a closed circuit unless you are using co2 in wich case you would probably need a/c to keep the room cool in the summer.
in an open system you just need a good sized intake that will pull cool air into the room and if the one in the floor is your coolest source of air that should be your intake to pull cool air into the grow room if you can make it large enough for an intake you shouldnt need any other blower or fan if you are restricted in size to just a 6 or 8 inch hole you will probably need a blower or fan to pull enough air in to make a difference.

There are other variables, more than I can count on both my hands and feet that would 'stop the plant from growing at its best'. Efficiency and bud production is something you gain with experience and better equiptment. There's absolutely no consequences in growing a plant around 90degrees in a home grow setup.

Razza - If you have air conditioning in your house, and if it is on all day long, then you would be best to draw air from inside the house into your grow room.

If the house is not air conditioned during the day and it gets real hot, the next coolest place to draw your air from would be under the house.

You could adapt a furnace filter to your air intake, but I wouldn't think a whole lot of insects could survive the trip through the intake fan.

I draw intake from a room that has had an ac running since may 1st... and I live up north! Works pretty well.

Insects... put a couple layers of stocking over the intake if you are really worried, but if you are drawing from indoors it isn't so much a problem... mites can certainly get through a fan, the indestructible little SHITS
