Transplanting Question

I have four plants all 2 1/2 weeks old in 6" pots. They are starting their 7th node, and are all short and compact due to me keeping the lights extremely close. Anyway, root hairs are coming out of the drainage holes. Obviously I need to transplant.

The problem is, 2 out of 4 of the plants need to be fed fairly soon, as they are starting to show a nitrogen deficiency, and the cotyledons are yellowing and falling off. This is normal for their age.

So, I need to know, should I feed them first, before I transplant? Because if I transplant, I can't feed right (for fear of inducing stress) for a while, and then I risk more of the leaves turning yellow and dying?

Also, what size pots should I transplant them in for their final home (from now until harvest). I plan on flowering them in 2 weeks, as they are growing at an extremely fast rate, and are indicas?

OK, Thanks. I'm going to get new pots later this morning to transplant them, and I'm going to feed them for their first time as well. I personally don't have a digital camera, but if I can access one later today, I'll post pictures of how it went.

I currently have Alaskan Fish Fertilizer. It's 5-1-1. It says it won't burn. It gives feeding directions for several different types of plants. Should I follow the directions for Indoor Plant Large, or Indoor Plant Flowering (even though it's not flowering, it's a flowering plant)?

My question now is, is Alaskan Fish Fertilizer enough food for my plant for it's entire vegetative cycle? (I plan on flowering in 2-4 weeks).

I've also heard Superthrive is good to feed plants after you transplant. If so, do I mix that in, in the same water as the alaskan fish fertilzer?

As far as pot size, since no one has given me an answer, I'm going to get the largest sized "square" pots I can get. They are the ones that are deep, but not so wide. I heard they are the best pots, because they allow for good root size, while not taking up too much space. This is ideal for me, since my space is a closet.

So, please tell me if my food choice sounds good, so I can pick up something different if I need to, before I go to the store. I'm using organic soil, and plan on this being an organic grow, but if going non-organic is what I need to do, to get me through this grow, then that's what I'll have to do.

please? I'm about to go to the store in an hour or so.

you go from seedliong...maybe 4" pot

to: 1 gallon pot for veg

then: 3 gallon Pot to finish. If you go to big...your roots grow to the bottom and get clusterfucked. you need them to spread out gradually.

I would be careful with that fish fertilizer. you really need a balanced mix...5-5-5,. or 10-10-10...if you don't balance the nutrient levels you will develop deficiencies and possibly nute lockout.

I think that might be an additive. find some water soluble ferts...or; better yet, spend 30 bucks on gh 3-part, or Pure Blend Pro, for flower.

Those product will allow you to grow in soil without anything else.

superthrive is all I would add at transplant. add 1/4 tsp of superthrive per gallon of water, and water plant. If when you see signs of leaf color change or any droopiness, starts to show...then add ferts.

So let me get everything straight Latewood:

I should add 1/4 tsp of superthrive to a gallon of water, and water my plants thouroughly after I transplant them. Correct? No other water soluable nutes? Because, like I said, on two of my plants, some of the leaves are starting to turn pale, and eventually yellow.

Like I said, they are starting their 7th node, and on top of that, the 1st node, 2nd node, and 3rd node, all have new growth shoots on their 3rd node. So, they are growing fast, and need food.

So, assuming Superthrive is all I give them, when do I start feeding them "real" food? Would peters all purpose 20-20-20 be good? Like I said, I wanted to go organic, but it looks like that won't be a good idea, no?

Oh, lol, and by "big square pots", They start out as a small square at the bottom, but gradually get larger, but still stay square, lol. Someone posted a thread asking if they'd be alright, and I believe Stinky Attic said they are the best to use, plus I think they are quite cheap.

I think it is a moot point, "square ~vs~ round pots. LOL
just use 3 sizes through out grow. Like I pointed out.

all purpose would be OK. just don't everdo it. Is peters 20-20-20 water soluble? And why can't you get a real POT nutrient? Just wondering.

The only place in my town where I can get garden supplies/plant food is Wal-Mart. That's why I wanted to go Organic, as they have Bone Meal, Blood Meal, and Fish Fertilzer, but it seems like organic is too complicated for now.

Yes the Peter's is water soluble, but Wal-Mart also has a water soluble Miracle Grow Organic food. Would that be better?

use the peters this time, and if you need a secure place to buy nutes online, I can point you in the right direction

Just get the Miracle gro Organic choice soil. Mix it with a bag of hyponex, and dump in a bag of perlite. all available from wally's for under 10 bucks. I have and am currently using this mix of soil with my veggies, and it is kickin ass as so far. You won't need as much ferts. just water. you can add some ferts as plant needs it, and possibly buy some better nutes later. Peace

Awesome. I'm using Miracle Grow Organic Choice! I mixed 70% of that with 30% of perlite. I think that could be a reason why my plants are growing so fast (with the organic miracle grow) because, it's rare that I see plants on here, at only 2 weeks on their 7th node, with lots of undergrowth.

After I water with the superthrive once I transplant, once the soil dries and they need to be watered, is it safe to then use the Peter's as directed?

Okay, I need your help Latewood. Here's what I got. (I just finished transplanting about 5 minutes ago). I accidentally got too large of pots. They are 3 gallon, I meant to get 1 gallon, but a former grower in the family, told me they'd be fine. I didn't get "square" pots. Just regular pots.

I bought a small bottle of Superthrive. This is where I need help.

I transplanted my plants, but I haven't watered them yet, because I want to be sure I'm doing it right. Do I water them with ONLY superthrive? (1/4th tsp to 1 gallon of water)?

The reason I ask, is because my plants haven't been fed anything yet, and are looking like they need to be soon. I picked up some Expert Gardener All Purpose Water Soluble Plant Food. It's 24-8-16. Is that okay?

When can I start feeding that to my plants? It also has a half dose option for transplants, should I just use that all together instead of the superthrive since my plants need to be fed or what?

This is where I'm confused... Oh, by the way, I also picked up some Mylar. Currently my walls are flat white, but I read that mylar increases light reflectivity a little better than flat white, so I'm going to line my walls with the mylar soon.

But please, I need to water my plants, and need to know what to mix in with the water. Superthrive only? Superthrive AND Expert Gardener All Purpose Plant Food, or just the Expert? I need to know fast, as I don't want my plants to dry up and wilt, since I just transplanted them.

I watered each plant with 1 gallon of water with 1/4 tsp of Super Thrive. Hopefully they will live and continue to grow.

When it's time for them to be watered again, can I feed them with the plant food?

I explained up above what to do, and you either didn't read it, or ignored it. Anyway. All you need to water with is water and superthrive.

Yeah, I re-read it, to make sure that's what you said and then decided to do it. So far, they aren't showing any signs of sickness, or anything, so all is good.

I just wanted to be sure, as this is the first time I've transplanted, and fed, so I'm nervous/excited at the same time.

Wal-Mart didn't have Hyponex. I was kind of upset at the selection of overall plant food today. I feel I made the best choice out of all of the options there though, but since I won't need to feed them for at least almost week, I can most likely get new food. (Oh, by the way, I specifically wanted Peter's, or another 20-20-20 food, but they simply didn't have it, which kind of pissed me off).

So, I plan on going to a plant store sometime this week, where (I hope) they should have a greater selection of better foods. Is Peter's what I should get, or is there a better water soluble food that you can recommend. (It's a nursery/gardening type store, so they should have just about everything).

With the GH 3 Part, could I use it even though I'm not growing hydro?

If I go with an all purpose, I take it it should be 5-5-5, 10-10-10, or 20-20-20, something balanced. I noticed GH 3 Part isn't as balanced as all purpose. Since I'll be at a store with hopefully a variety of options to chose from, which would be best as far as 5-5-5, 10-10-10, and 20-20-20?

I was also unaware of how beneficial Super Thrive is. I read the Super Thrive thread. I was under the impression that it would kill/harm a young plant, or burn it somehow. I had no idea of all the uses!

3-part is balanced...once you mix all 3 parts. thats what I was trying to tell you.
Quit spending a few bucks here, and a few bucks here, on crap, and spend 30 bucks for a 3-part starter kit.

you're catching on. now order some 3-part and you will get it in plenty of time. nutrients are the last thing you need to worry about in soil...KISS method is highly recommended. Peace

Oh. I was under the impression that you didn't mix them, you just gave them a different one for each cycle of the grow. I'm going to try and get GH 3 part at the plant store. Or, is Fox Farm's line good? Either way, I'm going to get one of these 3 part ones, that are obviously what I need.

I'm not experienced at all when it comes to different nutrients, etc... so this may be a obvious question, but is the GH 3 Part water soluble? Would I feed them at every other watering?

As I was collecting what I did wrong for my grow so far, What latewood said is so understandable.. It's all coming back to me~

After you transplant, your new Miracle grow soil will provides enough nutrients during vegetative stage and Superthrive will help to grow roots. It might be better to wait until you put your plants into flowering and feed 1/4 strength of fertilizer and gradually change it to full strength.
Bad combo: (Transplanting + Feeding with full strength of fertilizer + Putting plants in flowering stage) at the same time.

I am using a Foxfarm tiger bloom product and it is a right product for flowering stage. GH is also on my trying-out list. When people are saying GH is good, It is good.. I would not think twice..

Don't use plant food.. I am feeding my pepper plant with this all purpose plant food but my weed. At the end, you will see the big difference..

This is a noob opinion so please correct me..

Well, there was no point in me transplanting, buying nutrients, more soil, or anything, as yesterday all 4 of them showed male pre-flowers on their 6th node, and on some of the lateral growth on the first and second node.

I don't see how all four (the only four) could all be male. Well, I started out with a lot of seedlings in peat pellets, and selected the best 4 which were growing extremely fast. All the others looked stunted compared to those 4, so I assumed they were no good, and got rid of them.

I mean, the 4 that I saved, sprouted in 2 days, and on it's 3rd day, was already on it's 3rd node. By week 2, they were all starting their 7th node. They were all compact too, until a few days ago, when their nodes started spacing apart, after I fed them. I read that males grow fast, so now that I look back on it it kind of makes sense.

The last 3 weeks have been a huge waste of my time. Also, a huge waste of money.

But, I have a question? How did they show their pre-flowers so soon? All four, at the same time? And yes, I'm sure it was a male-preflower. They started out as these small bumps, where pre-flowers should be. The next morning, I looked again, and the "bumps" had stems. They all showed definate male preflowers, exactly 3 weeks after planting the seeds. Is it possible they were lowryder? They were just random bag seeds. I don't think they are lowryder because they have lots of lateral branching, and I read that lowryder doesn't.

Anyway, I decided to make use of them after I chopped them down. I took all of the leaves, and made a salad, lol. I put tomatoes, cucumbers, sharp chedder, and ranch on it. It actually tasted good, lol. I even chopped up all the stems and put them in their too, lol. The soil, I put into the compost pile, and gave my mom all the pots for her flowers that she plants around this time. I then screwed in all of the CFLs into the lights in my room, and it's a hell of a lot brighter now. So, at least the money wasn't all wasted, as I'm making use of the materials. I can't figure out what I'm going to do with the mylar yet. I took it all down, but I can't figure out a good use for it. Maybe I'll make some sort of space costume, lol.

I'm never starting from seeds again, unless they are feminized, and I can't get feminized seeds because they are expensive and I'm not ordering seeds since I don't have a credit card, and don't feel like waiting, to send a money order.

So, if I ever decide to try and grow again, it will be from a clone. Since I don't know any other growers, and I don't live in a state with dispensaries, that will be hard to find, so I'm pretty discouraged and pissed about all of them being male...

But, thanks Latewood and everyone for all their help, at least I got enough leaves for a salad, lol.

I have been fooled many times by preflowers. My last NYCD was male...I thought...I was flowering it to obtain the priceless NYCD pollen, and it budded! I wouldn't jump to conclusions as to sex unless you have put them into 12/12, and found male pollen sacks Peace
