...we're talking first successful grow?...what was your source of information...enough to give you the confidence...to try it!...
just curious...
...me?... complete growguide from a seedbank in Holland...that I read over and over...until I could see myself doing it....then FAQ's from Overgrow...Zandor finished the cure...thanks Zandor (we will serve No wine..Before it's time).....

How did everybody FIRST learn to grow?
I started back in the early 70's before there were grow books around or at least before there were grow books available for the common person. It was all trial and error for the first few years until I figured out the plant has separate sexes and I kept getting a mess of seeds at every harvest! But as soon as I got it down Mel & Ed came out with their excellent grow guide and High Times was being published...back then High Times was actually a useful and very helpful magazine!

How did everybody FIRST learn to grow?
well i am actually in my first grow right now and it is going splendedly about a month from seed using a DWC bucket and my plant looks healthier than I ever thought that it would...what gave me the confidence to grow was the outrageous street prices!!! I went hydro pretty much cause its cleaner, i dont want dirt all over my house also i heard its quicker and offers better results, im gonna try a soil grow next....i love hydro cause i get to see all the roots develop like a fluffy white beard...i read online for a good month and a half while i collected all the materials, wasted a little money not getting the right stuff for my needs but hopefully in the end it will all be worth it. since i only have a two site DWC ill get some fem seeds and maybe save a mother and try cloning...i love talking about it, i noticed i constantly check my plants throughout the day...just love to see the thing grow and develop..never knew i would like it this much tho

I always grew veggies. Then when it was time to get going on cannabis, I looked here, and I bought the Cervantes book. From then on it was trial and error, and stupid nOOb Qs. hahaha let me tell you my first grow was successful (as in, the BF got to smoke it; I didn't smoke at the time), but vegged under flouros and flowered under a 70w HPS secuirty light. You can imagine yield was not so great!

I Haven't had a truly successful grow yet. My first try was about 6 or 7 years ago, it went to seed. I find these boards a priceless resource.
Thank you all!

How did everybody FIRST learn to grow?
Started smoking spring of 06.... so I am a very ambitious person over the course of the summer we germed and grew till the plant was burnt by lights soo badly lights that it died after it was watered with some tap water... just started to die.
But that was a very good experience those 2 weeks from getting it to germ, and to actually grow.
But from there I gave up for a while because I didn't want to even try it again without some HID lights which I still don't really have. (but now I think CFL's will work just fine for vegging before moving them to an HPS)
Until I just threw 3 seeds in a pot in some dirt... then comes April and I harvested. I had high hopes but in the end it was Hermie. There isn't much left of the plant now anymore however most was made into hash, and put a good 14g's into some butter ( plus another 6 grams of other stuff) which we made last night and will try out later tonight! I hope its good.
I learned a lot and there is nothing more valuable than experience when it comes to growing other organism there are simply too many random variables to think about. The idea that you can always find something better, or learn a new technique (fim lst scrog)... 2 years down the road now with all that knowledge and with some good genetics/lights you're a superstar, only further being able to refine your skill.
But the canna boards helped a ton, even when I don't get my questions answered :( haha

How did everybody FIRST learn to grow?
i know im only a month in but it seems too easy, i dont see how people mess up, im using the hydro bucket and still onyl had about 4 tiny spots of nute burn then cut it back a little and everything has been gravy.....it is a weed and i do fall in to the category of people who belive that it will gro winspite of YOU>
and now i got a little guy who is growing in soil, im putting way less resources into that grow since i dont plan on doing soil just gonna grow him up and see how little is needed to make these plants grow i guess.

I have had gardens all my life, but growing outdoors wasn't possible, and growing indoors is a horse of a different color. I did a lot of reading online .Then I found Justaseeds thread and followed his instructions , which is pretty clear. If you follow his instructions (and moniter ph) you'll bring in a crop. I got 3.5 oz's from a 250 switchable balast first time . thank you justaseed.
Oh, yeah, I didn't scrog, I LST'ed

While I was about the get out of the marine corps, I was stationed in okinawa japan. Okinawa got kindof boring.... I sat and read overgrow.com for hours on end and memorized all kinds of stuff. I started growing when I got back to the states and out of the corps.

I learned to grow from my pops (dad), when I was a teenager. He knew I was going to do it and he had done the whole time I was growing up, so he couldn't really tell me "no". Anyway, he gave me all of his old school tips and watched me do my thing and he was almost as proud of the product as me. Great experience!!! :stoned:

How did everybody FIRST learn to grow?
Learned after I was paying top $ for product being shipped in from the west. Was good x a year but said wtf, been growing veggies so why not green? Did me 1st indoor 2 + years prior & was a quasi success which led me to my 2nd outdoor grow. Reading a lot & learning how not to make the same mistake twice. Need to re-up on nutrients, anyone with a heads up on the "best" ? Peace. Btw, cool thread.

How did everybody FIRST learn to grow?
1968; A local friend and professional landscaper grew excellent bud each summer. Got some tips from him, he grew very simply. My friend and I would try and grow out a little. Some success, lots of losses. Also read some of the early hippy grow books, could have been Mel and Ed. 1970s I worked in UMass and they had a nice scince dept with environmental chambers and grow rooms. I learned some things there. When I moved to Vermont there were many guerrilla growers. And I learned a little there. But after all this time I'm still learning all the time, especially since being on the island.

I'll second that!! I started in 69, buddy came home from nam, spent night by fire talking, decided then l liked pot and did not want to go over there. Got seeds from the bag, planted them the next day. That harvest decided that if a person got any, he did good. Ben learning ever since.

How did everybody FIRST learn to grow?
Started in 87 when I got out of High School. It took two seasons of less then stellar production for me to research my new found hobby. High Times was a great reference back then and every book you could find on the subject was like a bible. Anyway I learnt about ph and proper nutes and things took off.
I continued for about 6 more seasons giving it up in 96', had just gotten married and had a baby on the way. I took the next 12 years off, raising kids and being the good worker Hubby.
Then we moved to where I live now about 8 years ago and I could not resist taking up my old craft. The area is great with miles and miles of woods, mountain streams and a good sized river. There are many places where grapevine has taken over and few if any large trees stand. There is a small (1200ft.) mountain with a southerly slope to take advantage of as well. Plentiful supplies of water, sun and privacy, what more could a farmer ask for.
Year one back on the growers wagon was a disaster. I had over 50 plants doing great and just starting to flower. I had all the plants in a large spot and they got nailed in early August. It wasn't deer or rabbits or even some poacher it was the bad guy. Since then it's been one plant at a time no closer that 10 yrd to the next in any direction. No more bad guys getting my stuff anymore.

How did everybody FIRST learn to grow?
My first grow was a few years ago, good times. I grew tired of paying out the ying yang for good quality bud. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and see what I could do with a few seeds. With the ammount of knowledge from the forums here, an some friends with experience I was able to pull off a very good harvest my first grow. Of course trial an error has been a big part of it. Surprisingly what I had grew was just as good as what I was getting in the first place. From that moment I was bit by the bug. I've been growing my own ever since and wouldn't have it any other way!

How did everybody FIRST learn to grow?
In the late 1990's, there was no facebook. There was no web forum software like vBulletin. There was barely a web and Netscape made the number one browser. But there was usenet. It was almost an email protocol, but not quite. There were redundant servers and anything posted to one server would propagate thruout the world over a few hours time. There was no such thing as encrypted web. And email security was a big concern. So we learned to use pgp encryption, and used anonymizers to email comments into one of the usenet servers, who would then decrypt it and post it. There were two groups. alt.drugs.pot.cultivation and alt.drugs.pot.cultivation.hydroponics No sub-groups, just threads.
We named SOG and refined it. We invented SCROG. LST was just bending. Hybrids were new, and feminized seed was only an idea a few people were tinkering with. Autoflowering was accidental and annoying. Ordering seeds was shaky, and new seedbanks ripped off lots of people. But usenet friends would sometimes mail you a seeded bud or two, so you could try it out, and then grow it out if you liked it. Domestic mail was still safe to use. It was a small community, you knew who was smart. We had few posers, and less fake experts. We had a community-authored FAQ for new members.

Came from MANY generations of W.V. mountain folk. Organic farmers each & every one. Its a plant. Plant diseases can look a little different on your grow than in the garden, ok, so you get used to that. They flower on a 12/12 photoperiod, ok. Get to know your NPK & what it means, when your plants need a change (from nitrogen to phosphors). Now go grow something. Fine tune here & there, learn from your mistakes. Been there, done that before I earned my B.S. in hort. It just comes so natural to some of us, part of our natural way of life. For those who find it hard, well its usually just a matter of getting over a fear of failure.

How did everybody FIRST learn to grow?
We always had a vegetable garden growing up so basic plant care was nothing new to me. I had a family friend that had been cultivating outdoors for about twenty years. He chose to gift a clone to myself and my housemates one spring. We did most of the tending, and once or twice a week he would stop back over to check progress and offer advice. It's still the only outdoor crop I've dealt with. By winter that year I had purchased a Handbook by Billy McCann, found this excellent forum, and set up a tent indoors =) Had some rough times, had some great times, every harvest I'm looking forward to the next time.

Hate to burst your bubble, but SOG was all over High Times mag since the early 80's: So was SCROG, it just didn't have a name yet. We used rusted chicken & turkey wire (because this was for camo, new silvery stuff stuck out like a sore thumb) & kept everything low to the ground because the po po was looking for tall lanky sativas (& it made it easier to cover those slower sativas to shade for forcing 12/12, & for frost protection on frosty nights in cooler climates. FEMINIZED was discovered by accident, but auto-flower is the result of experimenting with ruderalis crosses begining mid to late 70's. Lived through it, grew through it, know it for a fact. These were underground things, not popularised untill later, but those of us of the underground, hippies, started this stuff before it became common knowledge. Most of the geeks & nerds of the 60's & 70's were hippies. Go figure..... :) :) :)

How did everybody FIRST learn to grow?
Warning, "humblebrag" to follow: :)
Read Bill Drake's, Marijuana cultivator's hand book in the early '60s.
Great book, still relevant!
Poked some seeds in the clay.
Cow's ate 'em.
Bought some 8' fluorescent tubes and some supersoil in '66.
Then started playing with Colchecine, gibberellic acid, x-rays, Hops splicing, and emulsified fish guts.
The fish guts worked.
Made my first hash oil in '67 from an oz of Columbian black in hot Ronsonol, (lighter fluid/naphtha).
Nasty, dirty, dark green muck, but it kicked ass.
Didn't really have a pretty grow until I moved to California in the '70s
Ah, good times.
Aloha,
Wee, ancient, 'zard

I learned some from a buddy who is pretty good at it. Some from doing reading on the net, and quite a bit from this site.Never heard of a whole lot of methods until I started hanging here!

How did everybody FIRST learn to grow?
I was first introduced to the art and the basics at some off-campus housing where some friends lived and grew while I attended college at a large, popular, state university in western Massachusetts about 10 years ago. There is a large local community of graduates of the school that grow and are happy to share their knowledge if they come to trust people that really piqued my interest.
I have not had the opportunity to grow until recently moving to where I currently live with my wife, and being offered a large, empty cabinet from a carpenter friend. I picked up a couple books by Ed Rosenthal and scoured these forums before building my cabinet, purchasing some seeds, and starting my first grow 2 weeks ago!

How did everybody FIRST learn to grow?
My first grow, I just germnative some seeds, and through them out in the woods. Then I forgot about them for several years, and went back to see where and if there was anything growing. Nothing but the woods had growed up around the place where I had put them. After that I just put some seeds in a pot and hope for the best. I would like to see some pictures, when you get things going. Good luck, and happy growing.
