Racism double standards in the UK

Breukelen advocaat had a thread on double standards of racial slurs in the forums, which made me think of this particular subject.

I go to uni in Leicester, which has the highest Indian population in the UK. There are more indians than whites, and a small portion of chinese. While the white side mainly consists of stoned, drunk, lazy student fools trying to get it on every night, the Indian side is ripe with gangs, drugs, family beefing and violence. To elaborate, being a student dominated town, there are good and bad apples on each side, but the indian side is apparently ripe with arguments, issues and violence. I know this because a few of my dealers and a hallmate are indian and they tell me how it goes down. I have also witnessed public violence between indians, sometimes quite extreme, on a few occasions.

This isn't the point however. There is a very obvious seperation between the two communities. There is rarely any beef between whites and indians, but then very little merging of the two communities either. It's very rare to see a mixed race group of friends and much more usual to see large indian gangs and small white social circles. The club scene of leicester consists of a few select student clubs, one or two of which play different music different nights, the rest play banghra and RnB. Indians handing out tickets and flyers to these events readily ignore whites and will sift through a white crowd to get to the Indian and hand him or her their flyer. It happens to me all the time, for a split second the guy is about to hand you a flyer, but upon seeing your complexion, restrains himself. This logically suggests a white person is not welcome at such an event and if one were to stray into such a nightclub, could face some serious agro (at a minimum).

Now lets think back to that "golden age" of whites only bars. Is this really any different to Leicesters predicament? Imagine if a white person handed out flyers in the street only to white people. There is no doubt in my mind they would be branded a racist, a bigot, prejudiced or even white supremacist. The club advertised on the flyer would probably recieve the same treatment. The fact is, in Leicester, the whites are the minorities and yet no-one appears bothered by this double standard. Perhaps an indians only club in an indian dominated city makes sense to some, but for those of us with an intellect, it's all the same either way. Just another flaw in our multi-cultural 'Utopia'.

Disclaimer: I consider multi-culturalism a very good thing, perhaps all too rare in todays world, but this is a shining example of a flawed society where prejudice is very public and highly evident, yet is not challenged because it is working the other way round. No, I do not have any real Indian friends for the reasons stated in the post, nor am I suggesting anything about the Indian society other than what is evident in many condemned white societies.

things like this rlly piss me off.. its sad how pretty much anything bad can be said abt whites by others but as soon as a white person says somthing abt anohter race they are attacked and labeled and it rlly can ruin things for that person...

i also think problems are caused by ppl like paula zahn who has her 'out in the open' shit... imo this causes and perpetuates racism by applying racism to things that other wise wouldnt be considered so or rlly isnt, just misinterpreted.. for example her story abt some university students having parties and dressing "black"... i mean come on most of that is bullshit, most of raps record sales are to white teens and young adults... granted some of the things may have been a bit over the edge but if u saw a white person walking down the street dressed gangsta do u label them as a racist and making fun of black people? thats more or less wat she does and thus makes more racism out of nothing... her other problem is that she generally doesnt have anyone on the other side of the argument so all that happens is u have a panel of ppl (often of mixed race) just bashing everyone for being racist, and if there is that person is labeled a bigot and ultra conservative nationalist

i hate how its near impossible to argue agaisnt the ppl who cry racism... even if ur argument is far more logical than theirs u just get called ignorant and racist and essentially are bullied into not arguing agaisnt it... its just so fucking annoying...

i dont see how the cycle of racism can ever be broken if u have tons of ppl (often ones saying they want to end racism) who are far too (i mean extremely) oversensitive and apply racism to nearly everything... blasting everyone and everything taht u think is racist (wen it isnt atleast) is definitely a terrible way to try to solve the problem... then u just have people not being racist out of fear... that doesnt fix anything it just hides it

the double standard thing bothers me too, but in your example maybe they just have a limited number of flyers and in the past have handed them out to everyone and found that white people wouldn't come to the events. People skip me when handing out flyers to greek organizational parties because its pretty obvious from the way I look that I wouldnt attend that event.

i think quite differently about this. IF you were to ask for a flier i'm pretty sure you'd get one. You try being Indian for a day handing out those fliers, after the first 50 get tossed in the trash or on the ground, i'm sure you'd give up too. In most situations like this both groups have the exact same feelings for the other group. If you reach out and try to immerse yourself in the Indian culture, except for a few bumps along the way, you'd do so easily. Just like your Indian friends who communicate with you.

What i'm trying to say is they are as weary of you as you are of them. Ask for a flier next time and then update us on what happens.

The growing support for the BNP and other right-wing parties is one indicator that a lot of Anglo-Celtic Britons are starting to get seriously pi**ed off with the current establishment and their 'blame whitey' game! And unless the Blair regime stops it's double standards, we could have Nick Griffin as PM.

we let everyone in, feed and house them, give them money,and give them a decent life, and all we ask for in return is that they respect our hospitality which i think the majority do.but some just come to this country and try to screw as much as they can out of us useing the race card, they have no respect for us or our laws but that is only a small minority.there is a small minority of british racists so lets not judge everyone by the minority.

As long as one person is different to the next, there will be prejudice. The trick is not to engage in it yourself. :)

How is Leicester uni? I actually want to go there! I am not indian but am tanned, more mediterranean looking and the multi-culturalism is one of the things that attracted me to the uni. I did see what you meant about the very high indian population but the pubs I visited seemed to have a quite diverse friendly crowd, didn't get a chance to go visit any of the proper clubs though, whats the club scene like there? Is there a high indian population in the uni itself? I visited just after Easter so only met third years doing there dissitations.
