Assembly of a homemade carbon filter. I used two 8"-6" reducers, a 6" and 8" plug, 12 screws, chicken wire, door screen, some aluminum foil tape, and a crapload of zip ties. Only thing left now is to fill it with carbon that I ordered, and hook it up to my 250 watt attic fan, wooooeeee. Materials cost around $25, 27 pounds of carbon for $49.
That's a nice freggin carbon filter. How many plants do you think the thing can filter? Have you used any for your actual grow ops yet?
I won't be able to say until I see how much carbon I stuff in it. I'm not currently planning on having more than 10 plants flowering at a time, and I think this filter will work beautifully for them. Only way I have more than 10 girls is if my basement is cleared out, and can be sectioned off for extra flowering. Thanks for the props, I'll have the carbon in a few days, then I can let ya know how well it works.
I had to rig my squirrel cage fan to use the carbon scrubber as an intake, and it's not recommended, cuz they burn out this way. BUT, there is ZERO odor, besidez ONA all around my flowering room. But when you open the door, DAMN STINKY! I'm either going to order a can fan, or rig my 12" attic fan to two 6" scrubbers.
While I totally know what that is, I think you should explain for some of the less-educated folk.
A carbon filter is used to "scrub" air of, among other things, odor. The carbon filter is hooked to a vacuum, preferably a high output can fan(200 watts or so) and all air that is sucked through the fan, must first be pulled through a layer of carbon. My filter has about 12 and a half pounds of carbon stuffed into it, and works fairly decently. I'm already thinking of upgrading it, so I can stuff about 30 pounds or more in it. The carbon I used came from Ebay for around $50 for 27 pounds. Altogether, I probably paid $75 for a filter that could be sold for $135, maybe more. When I do make my 30 pound filter, it's cost will still be around $75, but worth about $180 or more according to the pro built ones. You have to make the carbon filter so large, as there is a lot of air restriction due to the carbon. So, increase the surface area by about, quadrouple or so, and it's like pulling air through a 5 or 6 inch in diameter duct. I was getting really worried recently that someone would take notice to the outdoor odor, which is why I built this thing asap. My neighbors are morons who have people drive by and buy drugs from their car window, and cops get called on them, and they call the cops all the time complainin about their baby's momma, blablabla, so, i was worried. I'm sorry I ramble....

Basically yeah it's just for odor. I'm not for sure about homemade filters but like the one I'm buying I'm pretty sure it's good for taking out hot air out also..although I really don't need it to do that because the room doesn't even reach over 80 degrees as it is. Max temps in my room is like 77-78 degrees I hope it doesn't make it even colder in the room when I get it lol.Quote:

Could you hook up an exhaust fan from a grow room or box to a carbon filter, so that it pushes the exhaust air into the filter and the filtered air escapes through the sides of the filter?
Personally, I don't see it being any more beneficial this way. It's a, if it isn't broke, don't fix it, kinda thing. Plus, all the "dirty" air would be making its way out of the grow room, allll the way to where you have the carbon filter hooked to the ducting, leaving a lot more room for air leakage. And then your house will reek of skunk, and/or other beautiful smells. My homemade one's already losing its spunk. Soooo, I'm driving out of town to pick up a 700 cfm can fan, and a BIG ole carbon filter. Plus a lot of other crap.
Well the reason I say this is because I'd be making a grow box and there wouldn't be much room inside unless I secure it to the edge, then maybe. I dunno yet because i havn't built it.
Carbon filter for bong? I'd imagine it'd make it smoother, but at the same time reduce potency of the hit. That's just seems weird. Ice and water's the only filters I need for green.
