So I hear many mention they're always re-potting.
Originally when I decided to give mj a try, I thought the less the plant was moved around and messed with, the less stress would be created and the plant would be healthier. But it made me view drainage as even more important if indeed I was to germinate in a large container and keep it there until harvest.
So I gave it a shot; used deep containers to allow for serious root development, provided a decent layer of gravel on the bottom and used a perlite ratio of about 60%. Rest of the soil was a mix of cheap organic soil and peat moss.
Things started off great, using only organic nutes (and at low to medium concentrations as well) and keeping the air moving seemed to be the ticket. After the girls were sexed, I gave them a mediocre flush with plain water and set about intertwining them into some hawt scrog action.
Now everything except the buds is a disturbing shade of yellow. My pH is fine, things aren't too damp or dry, no molds or diseases, and the thrips I encountered earlier are more or less gone (gotta love pyrethrin!)
I'm worried this batch is screwed, which pisses me off extra as after this I'll only be growing good ol veggies for the foreseeable future. Really wanted one good run at it you know?
Flushing now is almost out of the question due to the container arrangement and use of scrog. Anyone have any thoughts?
I guess I could move a trash bag under each container and give it a shot, and just siphon run off out with a turkey baster or something. Would this be a good time to invest in FloraKleen or ClearEx? If you use a flushing additive like those, can you use less water overrall? Might there be a homemade equivalent of these too?
I'm afraid to post pics of my girls, it might ruin Ms. Stinky's day or some thing ;) (really, they look depressing...)

Lordy, they couldn't possibly look any worse than mine, and yet the smoke from mine is the craziest. Post those pics, it'll get you some extra help.
LMAO @ hawt scrog action.

I too have started only using one pot right from seed to flower, To make things easier and well thats about it.
I have noticed that My plants didn't do as well. As before My PH still get out of wack. I think thats more my fault tho. I use Botanicare Pur Belnd which you add everytime you water, So there really isn't any flush time.
I am planning on changiong my watering regime to feed feed water... Or better yet feed feed flush...
I even Ph Up my water to like 7.5 and I still get a low run off. 6.0 this paticular strain Im growing now really couldn't handle that low PH like others I have grown. Shes got rust blotches all ove rher fan leaves/.
So next time around Im gonna switch to that water schedual, feed feed flush... And if that don't work im gonna do a transplant half way through the grow..
Sorry I can't help you much man.. thats just my experience. I really want to avoid transplanting... Its messy and a drag in an aprtment...

damn...that would suck...as in like you can't go outside? I live on a dead end street...throw my dead stalks in the mexican's field out front  wash my buckets out with the water hose in the front yard..maybe it would suck moving to a big city..

yeah like replace all your cleanup stuff,,, Like Hose.. drain, Sewer... etc...
With a bathtub and a sink......
Its really not too too bad I don't have massive pots etc.. I grow in One gallon pots and my plants are never taller than 2 feet.
but its just a pain in the ars to trasplant cuz I get soil all over the aprtment,, and my ladie don't approve..... :wtf:
We have 2 cats and a small dog they make enough mess... lol

I'm starting to think it might be a genetic issue, this ain't a "top shelf" project if you know what I mean. As for the pics, I'm without a digital currently, but for the sake of sharing just look at the pics in the 'Salvageable?' thread. The color characteristics are practically identical, the only difference being his girls don't seem to be into the kinky bondage scene. ;) Heehee...

You know it!
All girls need a little hawt scroggin at some point, I read it on the intarweb somewhere, so it must be true. Heh.
Speaking of random odd things I've heard, anyone know if a weak dilution of green tea functions the same as FloraKleen/ClearEx?

Sounds like they need more nutes...not less. Still salvagable's stuff is an N def....if you have the same looking stuff flushing is only going to make things worse...not better.

Could they be rootbound? Sounds crazy but when you transplant in stages the roots fill the container then build a little on the side, you transplant and they6 move out again and build on the sides you transplant again same thing. When you start in one pot the roots have room to stretch and grow without piling up somewhere till they finally reach the container and pile up while there is lots of usable soil in the middle, it wasn't used at the time because it wasn't needed. See if you can ggently pop on out of the pot oa little or look through the holes on the bottom and see how your roots are doing.

yes. Chrissy has the handle on it. I too did the "hey I'm gonna skip some steps and save stressn my plant." What happened, my plant was fine till midway through flowering and went all whacky. Turned yellow, fan leaves died off and I freaked. I ended up transplanting in a 10 gallon pot and she came back within a week and produced like a beast.
make sure you place soil in the bottom, tamp to remove air, fill the sides and remove air as well. I mixed up a moist batch of potting soil so there was less fluff.
good luck

Or go to the FAQ and read up on stress free transplanting. I've never once had transplant shock with this method, and see inches growth by the next day. I transplant 4 times even during flower.

Chrissy is brilliant.
Also, just my experience, sprinkle rooting powder in the new hole.

Well ladies n gents, you've convinced me - avoiding transplanting is not the way to go.
However, the thought of re-potting after the girls have already been scrogged is something that doesn't exactly thrill me.
Now I have to decide if I want to just chance it and try to nurse them along to harvest, or break out the snippers and do away with the screen so I can re-pot.
Ugh....decisions...decisions...
thx guys...

Double pot them if you dont want to/cant x-plant. Especially for a scrog. Take those snippers, cut the bottom 1/3 off the pot they are in, then set that pot in an identical pot about 1/2-2/3 filled with soil. No "transplant stress" at all, plenty of room to grow and your scrog is intact

Well, I did it. After some thinking, I decided it was time to bite the bullet and just get it over with.
Getting them out of the screen wasn't as bad as I was expecting to be honest. And I think I found the problem: the roots had made contact with the layer of rock I used in the container bottoms - I suppose the mineral composition of said drainage layer didn't agree with them? I guess this is why people use clay pellets or marbles... *sigh* Live and learn I suppose... It would explain why things looked the way they did without an out-of-whack pH or over/under feeding.
I was thrilled with my root structure though! Thrive really does make a difference - I had (easily) 4 or 5 times the root mass in these containers than I did with my first try in containers of similar volume.
Got'em out, freed up the roots, gave it all a bit of a shake to dislodge soil and perlite, and re-potted with new soil and generous amounts of tamping. Finished off with spring water and Thrive to address transplant shock.
*crosses fingers* I'll let you guys know if they pull through! ;) Thanks for all the input btw...

Next time skip the shake, try to keep the roots as intact as possible, causes less stress and less time to recover and get back to growing.

D'oh!!!
That would explain why I'm not seeing any color change yet - in fact, I've lost 9 fan leaves in total since the switch.
I think I may be setting a record for fewest fans possible without abject death being involved!
Guess I'll dose everything with more SuperThrive next watering and keep my fingers crossed.
Would more nutes help at this point, or is it a better idea to not feed until they've recovered and shown signs of improvement?

I really doubt if it was the roots touching drainage rocks. They grow well wrapped around nearly anything buried in the ground so it must be something else. If your leaves are spotting then dying off it's most likely your tap water that needs fixing. And using drainage rocks aren't necessary if using pots with drain holes in them and will only mess up the weight when checking for watering needs. Next time...

Sorry, but I wasn't using tap water. Nor did I have spots; the malady in question was severe yellowing, following by fan leaf die-off. The containers did have drainage holes in them as well btw... A layer of stones was used as I didn't want the drilled holes to become blocked with compressed peat or chunks -o- perlite. Worked pretty good I thought, as my run-off was pretty free of medium matter.
So, next time? ;) Hydro? Coco stuff looks interesting...
