If i dont buy female seeds is there anything i can do to help my seeds germanate into female plants?
i heard that giving nutes to plants in the first 2 weeks they have sprouted encourages it to be male. im sure somebody here can explain that though.
ive seen info on this before but now i cant find it.
Naturally - the only way I know tho insure more females is to avoid all stress in your grow . There's b/s chemicals out now / feminisers but I'm way skeptical about that junk .

well really, all it takes is a female name.. like heather or brittany, and then make it wear a dress every day to school... Oh and every so often beat it and call it a slut....
it may not be an ACTUAL female by the time you're done - but it'll darn well THINK it is! har har
but the truth is, no. sex is pre-determined. there's nothing you can do except not stress the plant, so it doesn't turn hermy on you. At least I think that's the deal. I'm new at this too, so I might be wrong.
has anyone heard of putting a birth control pill in a ziplock with the seeds?
i have heard something about birthcontrol and growing but im pretty sure its one of those 'myths'.......it will not do anything
Hrm... That makes no sense on many levels.
Logically I wouldn't think that a human female pregnancy hormone could affect a plant.
Second, if by some miracle the hormone could affect a plant... how would the seeds be receiving such hormones? osmosis through the shell?
Third... Why waste good birth control?
Really, med-user, you're not the first person to want to have all-female seeds. If there was such a simple way to do it, then don't you think every grower would be doing it? Just plant several seeds, and toss the lads as you find em.
I have a few 1920s articles about growing hemp. They cover how the % of males to females can be skewed. These early scientists were trying to promote male flower growth, since the male produces hemp fiber, but their findings can be used for producing female plants. :D
CARBOHYDRATE-NITROGEN RATIOS WITH RESPECT TO THE SEXUAL EXPRESSION OF HEMP
(from the article) "10. An abundance of nitrogen at the time of fruit bud differentiation obviously leads to the production of female flowers, while the absence of nitrogen at that time tends to the production of male flowers."

ya i would like to find a way to make all my seeds female, the only reason i brought this up is because i think ive got about two females out of 15 seeds. does that seem like a normal ratio? but im pretty sure your right i think sex is probly predetermened
There is a chart around somewhere.....lower temps encourage females. I believe latewood said something about trying less lighting during veg (15 hrs light instead of 16 or24) and less humidity are among the factors mentioned. I did try the 15 hour thing last grow....ended up with same ratio of females as before.
The feminiser will not MAKE females. I thought this when I originally bought it but in actuality what it does is keep plants from becoming hermies due to stress. I am a huge believer in it.....my first grow (including my outdoor stuff) yielded 4 hermies out of 15 females....different kinds of seed as well--non of them purebred seeds. My hydro guy sold me this and I have not had a hermie since. 0 hermies in 11 females. Huge ratio difference in my book. All different seeds. And while I always swear to myself to reduce my plants stress.....I have not been able to accomplish that yet.....I keep finding SOMETHING to stress my plants out. ;)
Yeaap :)Quote:

Looks like my plants are bound to be females, temp isnt very warm (will be warmer later in veg), and my soil has nutes already (no signs of nute burn either.. except on one that I didn't flush.. little spots on it and the end of the leaves have a hint of brown in them, but arn't dry)
Humm dont bet on it if there not feminated! :DQuote:

something interesting i read in a back issue of high times i had laying around. there was a article that mentioned light poisoning. i guess what you do is for the first 3 weeks of bloom you turn the light on for one hour during the night cycle. any one hear of this or try it?
sounds like it would add stress? :S
well first let me say its written by soma in high times oct. 2001 issue. pg. 98 it says that with the unpredictable eviroment the plant feels like the world is ending or something so they do what they can to servive. and his quote is that a female will make a male branch that will fertilize all of them. he then goes on to say that since theres no males in the room there are no male chromosomes, so the seed wont contain male chromosomes. (just telling you what ive read.) thats what it says. so can i believe everything i read? might be worth a try with one plant. he then talks of another method but ill save that for another time if someone is intersted.
That is stressing the plant into being a hermie...making feminized seed. Anyone reading up on this ck out this FAQ http://boards.cannabis.com/grow-faqs...zed-seeds.htmlQuote:

fewer hours daylight e.g. 14 hours.
less stress.
just thought i would update this. im just telling ya'll what ive read. i not telling you to belive it, make up your own mind. its all trial and erorr.
