JOURNAL OF A MADMAN - HASH/KIEF MAKING
OK, well, here are some pics of the hash/kief made from the dried trimmings from the plants in the JOURNAL OF A MADMAN thread. I might add more pics from future threads in here, not sure.
Like I said, the trimmings were dried, then rubbed onto this t-shirt-making type of silk screen. Working with a bit at a time, it is amazing to see how much kief you get from it. Using a smooth, non-porous surface like marble or glass is important so that you can SEE the kief and so that you don't lose any.

More pics...
One VERY IMPORTANT step in this process is to draw a picture of a cannabis leaf in the kief. if you do not do this, your kief will not compress properly and will lose it's potency in a matter of days.

Here are the rest of the pics.
The kief is gathered, put into a cellophane baggie (like a cigg baggie), and rolled up. It is taped well and then wrapped in paper and taped again. Then, it is dipped in water, compressed with a hammer or book, and then put in the oven for a few minutes (about 10) on a low setting, while keeping your eye on it, of course. THen, you have pressed kief. If it is cooked it a little more, it will get stickier and turn into the hash you are used to seeing...I think! ;)

I use paper coffee filters for the last filter, squeeze all the excess water through it till its dry (ice method), then I stick the wrapped coffee filter under the leg of my heavy desk for half an hour. It comes out looking like a block of original, authentic hash.

Hey Fog
You say you must use the dry trimmings? What exactly are the trimmings? All the leaves and such trimmed off after harvest?
I really wanna make hash when i harvest :D
Peace :rastasmoke:

JOURNAL OF A MADMAN - HASH/KIEF MAKING
Hey GreeFog, I thought you planned on making hash oil with this havest? I need to see that thread.
-
JOURNAL OF A MADMAN - HASH/KIEF MAKING
simple as that heh,i think this is what i will be doing with all my excess trim now,i used the isopropyl method for the leftovers of my last grow and wasn't very impressed by it,left a foul taste,in fact i still have it,was that bad
-
JOURNAL OF A MADMAN - HASH/KIEF MAKING
my technique is a little different...
but whatever makes the sticky... :D
-
JOURNAL OF A MADMAN - HASH/KIEF MAKING
~blank_21~ Well, yes...the trimmings should be dry. This makes them easier to break into smaller pieces and therefore brings more surface area in contact with the screen. They are simply the smaller leaves that are covered with trichomes, NOT the large fan leaves...those are discarded.
Pic
On left are large fan leaves ready to be discarded. Right is smaller trichomey trim.
Trim is placed in bottom of the dry box to dry, then placed in baggies. Baggies are put into freezer for a couple hours before making the hash, which makes the trichomes stiff and easier to break off when they are rubbed on the screen.
~FreeVenice~ You must have me mistaken with someone else. I don't believe I have ever mentioned Hash Oil before...but I'm surely interested in it. :)
~atsar~ Yep, simple as that...for this method. There are always trade-offs though with any method. For example, true bubble hash supposedly produces the best and most pure results, but requires much more work. This method is simple and easy, but you will get a less pure hash.
What this means is not that the hash will have less trichomes (THC) in it, but it simply means that there will probably be a little more green matter in the hash as opposed to extraction by another method. But if you think about it, when you smoke normal bud...you are smoking LOTS of green plant matter...so that is MUCH less pure. Take your pick, ya know. :)
Regarding the isopropyl alcohol method, I've heard that if it has such a bad taste, that might have resulted from attempting to cook off the alcohol too fast or not letting it fully evaporate. I dunno. That's too bad that you had that result, though, man. Bummer.
~Scarlet Sky~ So, what method is that? And where is the end result. I'm sure you don't just mix summadat in your tea...
;)
The Fog :rastasmoke:
Hash is sexy. :D

JOURNAL OF A MADMAN - HASH/KIEF MAKING
Oh...I forgot to put the picture in from the last post. LOL
Left side are large fan leaves, which will be discarded. Right side is the smaller leaves that are saved for hash.

What did you use to rub it into the silk screen with? your hands or something else? This looks really interesting, and I'd love to try it. Oh, and what does dipping it in water do for it if it is sealed in plastic and tape? does it just make it easier to compress?
-
JOURNAL OF A MADMAN - HASH/KIEF MAKING
postmandave & shov...'preciate it. :D
Thanks guys.
Hey TheGanjaKing. It is in plastic...tape...and then paper. You dip it in water so the paper doesn't catch on fire when you heat it.
Oh and use a latex glove and just use your hand to rub it in. You don't need the glove...but...you know.

JOURNAL OF A MADMAN - HASH/KIEF MAKING
Damn, I've been slacking. Sorry, guys.
~Cornelius & Weed4Life~ No doubt. Thanks! PLEASE post pics on here when you do it! Thanks, again. :D
~c of green~ I dunno about that, man. I'm curious myself as to whether it is better to make hash from dried or wet leaves. NOT using this method (this method requires dry to be most effective), but doing bubblehash, for example. If I have to make a thread with a poll about it, I will, but WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK? If you are going to make bubblehash, freeze when wet and make or dry then freeze then make??????
Hey, c of green, did you ever post that method of yours? I wanna see the gym shorts! LOL
~orangeman~ Sorry, yes, I'm sure you probably could...but, c'mon man, you can find a cellophane somewhere, they are on packs of blunts too! :D They just seal better than sandwich bags. Cellophane, you just roll it up, flick a lighter and press it while it's hot...sealed! Voila.

I found defenetly dry leaves i tried it with while the leaves were damp and the trichs get stuck to ur hand and the screen and i used cling film cuase i had no ciggies and squeezed it between my fingers till it all binded , made some nice sticky white russian hash its another pleasure from a sucsessfull harvest and it proved to me that the hash we get in the uk is muck and i never ever got hash of the quality of the home made stuff ive done.great thread frog well done man.
-
JOURNAL OF A MADMAN - HASH/KIEF MAKING
by wet or dry i meant water extraction or not?I was reading about "rubble hash"mixed wet and dry extracted trichs so you get the great taste of dry and the increased potency of wet.didn't know if that was his opinion or fact as i am a hash rookie.does dry taste better?is bubble more potent?
and i will get my cheap method up as soon as i take pics.(didn't the last time cuz it was the first time and didn't want to document something if it didn't work)
-
JOURNAL OF A MADMAN - HASH/KIEF MAKING
So, I'd say dry is preferrable.
"rubble hash," c of green? What's that? Wasn't there a thread on here called "Gumby Hash?"
Let me look...well, I can't find it. It was with buckets of water and a blender attachment...anyone know what I'm talking about?

HT i think.canadian guy, mixed wet and dry sieved trichs.....called it rubble-hand rub + bubble=rubble.he said dry tastes better and bubble is more potent, just curious of others opinions.

 There is another way that I found over the web where you actually cook it. It's pretty much the same method as TheGreenFog. You follow all of the steps that he does except after you put all the kief in the cellophane baggie, you fold the baggie tight and seal it with scotch tape. Then wrap that with a little bit of newspaper and seal it with 2 pieces of tape. Soak it in water until it is 70% saturated and stick in a preheated oven for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and roll it with a rolling pin until somewhat evenlly flattened. From here you can let it sit for a few seconds and then open it up and enjoy. You will find a hard brickish type of hash. I am going to try and post the video on here, its a Quicktime video. Or you can email me and I'll send it to you.
Enjoy:D

your supposed to roll it, then cook it, then roll it again. when you cook it, it softens up the resin and it makes it easier to compress.
just my two cents. stay cool!:rastasmoke:

JOURNAL OF A MADMAN - HASH/KIEF MAKING
So what makes this more special than hash or just plain old weed? I'm confused.
-
JOURNAL OF A MADMAN - HASH/KIEF MAKING
If a person only has 3 plants or less, there doesn't seem like much of a reason to go thru all that work to make hash does there? Why not just smoke the tiny leaves, you are still getting all the trichomes and after all, we grow for the trichs.:)
