my buddy and I are gonna be growing about 4-5 plants in an area about 5 feet by 4 feet and around 6 feet tall. we were wondering if this 400w mh lamp would be good for us? http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/customkit...c=HLMH04SM&eq=
Thanks!

Yeah, it would, but also concider getting a HPS for flowering. Plants need a blue and red spectrum of light. MH has blue, so its great for vegative growth, but HPS has a more red spectrum so you'll deffintaly see the differnce, but you can use a MH all the way through. Good luck.
You don't have a lot of height to work with, you might be better off with many CFL like BobBong has used and Harddon has used to good success. Save the heat in a space that small and focuse on other issues of growing and not deal with the heat.
ZANDOR....you used the "C" word.....
now I have seen everything...
should he use miracle grow?
LOL
6 feet is plent of height. With the light your intending to use, keep plants 2-2.5' in height, as you will expoential loose intensity with every foot away from the light source.
well its about 6 feet 8 inches tall cause im 6'6 and i can stand under it and theres about an inch or 2 above my head...lol..we are just worried about 400w being not enough...is 400w enough or do we need a 1000w???
Get one of these http://www.specialty-lights.com/901154.html with the EYEHortilux 6500k this MH bulb has the best spectrum I have seen. It has excellent blue with better red than most HPS bulbs (if you disagree put up a spectrum analysis please.) The cool tube will let you grow your plants real close to the bulb too.

Ok guys, hope you can deal with the heat then. Look at the cubic feet too I just think that if the plants starts off 12" off the ground and normal 30-45 day veg the plant will be about 3-4' tall plus the 12" to start with. Add some flower time where they stretch and you have a 5'10" plant or so and no room for the light to go up anymore and displace the heat.
I was just thinking about the room above the light to help displace heat is all.
Good luck hope it works out great!!
GK even I have one or two of those lights. How do you think I light clones or seedlings to start them dude...................man get real..................<snap>:smokin:
I would purchase a 400w HPS ballast, that way you can use a MH conversion bulb for veg, then stick in the HPS bulb for flower. You get the best of both worlds, and only have to buy one ballast.
I would avoid 1000w, as 400w is sufficient for a grow of your size and uses much less electricity. Plus, you might have heat issues with the 1000w.
Height won't be a problem, as long as you don't let them grow 3 feet tall before flowering.
