So as a resident of Toronto, I feel that this is an issue that must be addressed a lot harder in the future. The increase in Gang violence this year has been ridiculous. Innocent people are now being killed. People no older than some of you on this site. A few of my friends knew the girl that was killed. A few of my friends were even across the street at the time. It's sick really.. and sad at the same time..
This coming election will be strongly influenced by the different parties response to this terrible event.
I'm not so against capital punishment anymore.
Thoughts?

Well i hope that people realize Paul Martin's handgun ban isnt going to reduce crime whatsoever, but i really think that they need to make harsher sentences for violent crimes

We my friend are at the dusk of these horrid times. I beleive we will both see a new world order in our lifetime. A world of peace, love, and mindfulness :) Have faith my brother

As an american I always was kinda fascinated by Canada's low violent crime rate and generally seemingly utopian society (compared to the US)..Hell I would totally move up there if I could stand the winter.
I remember in Fareinheit 911 there are all these interviews with Canadians who are baffled by american societies violence.
Fact is, despite this late

despite this latest act of violence Canada is no where in the same league in violence as the US.
I think we've been desensitized here because when I read your post I was like "Oh..only ONE person dead? That's good." That's how bad it is here. We have shootings like that EVERY DAY in every city and it doesn't really make headlines.
In fact, there was just a triple murder suicide around the corner from my parents house in an affluent suburb of Washington DC. It made CNN headlines and the Washington Post and I even saw the Swat truck drive by that morning. But it's like "Oh well...somebody snapped and killed a bunch of people.." I mean it's NOT even surprising to anyone here anymore. The only reason it made headlines is because it was in a NICE town.
So Canadians, don't fret you have along way to go before you reach our level and that is a good thing.
PS- If the death penalty really deterred people from committing murder the us would be the safest place in the world

the thing about Toronto though is there's alot of murders in shopping districts where thousands of people are shopping and gangs just come and have shoot outs with each other

and yah i dont think the death penalty solves anything either

Well every country even Canada has crime problems. No place is really totally safe.
But it's a question of statistics. Canada despite some shootings is still WAY better than the US.
I'm not bragging. Canada is a better country than the US in alot of ways.
You guys have awesome bud up in BC!

Yea.. the states is also a much more populated country..obviously you're going to have a lot of violent crimes when it's written into your constitution that you're allowed.. and even encouraged to have guns. Handguns are supposed to be a big no-no in Canada, when you enter this country there's a big sign that says "Handguns are Illegal In Canada." ...but when people are found with handguns, they're mearly slapped on the wrist.
Like dopesmoker says.. it's not the acts itself it's the nature of it. A lot of Toronto's shootings occur on the sidewalk of a busy street.. or on a bus.. or in the middle of a mall. Not just domestic violence, but acts of war if you will between gangs and ethnic groups.
People are shot just walking down the street. Innocent people. A girl was shot in the head earlier this year when a shooter opened fire on a crowded TTC bus. Thankfully she lived, but the blatent disregard for innocent bystanders is sickening.
Yes, we're very fortunate that only one was killed this time but look at the victim, she was only 15..out with her family on boxing day.
The big issue here is how to deal with the groups that are causing this violence.
