lol, just a single 23watt CFL would be plenty of light for the first week or so
once they're healthy enough to withstand it, the MH will probably give you
the fastest growth, at least that's the conventional wisdom.
i use CFL's myself and i find that they grow very fast, i end up throwing
vegetation away when i take cuts, lol, i've actually had to get in there
and hack shit down , just to make room, it grew so fast.
bump.
anyone else with ideas... also whats the optimum distance if using a 400w MH.
From my limited experience, I have found that T5's are really great for veg.
Having used a 400 watt CMH for vegging on my last grow...I have come to the conclusion....400 MH or CMH is overkill for seedlings. At least during the first 1-3 weeks. IMO.Quote:

I run seedlings in ~60 mL 6-pax of unfertilized seedling mix, under a T5- 4 bulb fixture at ~4-6" until they are large enough for the first transplant and feeding (into 3" pots at 5 nodes).
Then they go under a MH400 with Horti Blue. Growth explodes at this time.
400watt MH is the quick 1000MH is quicker. T-5 slower, cheaper. Happy Trails

theres some dissagreements here... u say t5 4bulb fixture. another says 400w is quick and 1000w mh is quicker and t5 is slower.... but going from seedling i personally at this point believe a flouro to begin is the way to go. im going to listen to stinky. more thoughts and opinions are much welcomed.
Ya early in growth u dont neeed some high powered light, wait a few weeks then put up a MH or maybe just get a hps with agro bulb(30%more blue) and use that the whole time.
I run seedlings and young plants( 4 weeks and under) under T5's then I switch to MetalHalide for a couple of weeks...Sometimes if my plants are real tight from the T5 Ill put them under HPS so they stretch a little..... I really like the combo of T5 and MH if you can swing it.... good luck :rastasmoke:
