Use rockwool cubes or netpots w/ clay pebbles (hydroton). These are the easiest ways, especially for beginners.
He has the baskets and the Hydroton, but he said he's not sure if Hydroton is a stable enough medium to support a seedling.
u need the rocwool or rapid rooters then once the roots show u put them into the hydroton
Would it be possible to put the seeds in a smaller rockwool cube and then put that inside the Hydroton in the basket? So essentially, the rockwool is like an inner core inside the surround hydroton? Hopefully that makes sense to someone.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but yes. You want to do exactly that. If you put them in the smaller rockwool cubes you add that inside the Hyroton basket once the roots show because you are not going to want to seperate the rockwool from the roots. Even if you were transplating them to soil you would keep them in the rockwool.
What my friend wants to know is if you can put the smaller rock wool cubes straight into the hydroton right after you put the cracked seed on them, without letting the roots show first. The only reason is that he is using the same E&F system for the whole grow so basically all he has to do is switch the lights from 18/6 to 12/12.
If this isn't possible, whats the best way to get the plant to actually sprout out of the rockwool enough to put the cube into the hydroton?
Bumping this. Anyone?

well u could but the light needs to be close enough they don't stretch or burn them the best way is to have a seedling dome with starter moss peat plugs u can get it at walmart if anything atleast the dome the lil black tray and clear lid put them in that under a couple of cfl's not hard to make a light set up if u don't have one then mist them down where they stay damp and let the dome do all the work pull 1 out ever so often and when u see roots then put into the clay pellets and it sounds like ur still not sure what that means so i'll explain alil better when u go to put the plug with roots showing into the basket u first put a layer of clay balls in the bottom of the basket as far up as u want the plug to be u don't want the plug sittin in water then u put the plug in and u have to hold it in the center as u fill the clay balls in around it for support after the balls are filled in around it u top it off to the top with the clay balls having a root system there is better u can just stick them in but u don't want to much water on them thats why it's better to start out in a dome it's easier to control.what ever u do don't let the water build up on the top of the plugs.
