HPS produce less heat and are more efficient the MH... about 10-15% more lumens per watt.
I dunno about that... I noticed a 6-8 degree change when i first switched from MH to HPS.Quote:

It also depends on where your ballast is, and what sort of ballast, and if it is good condition- crappy ballasts run hot, it's a fact. Also I am starting to think that an aging bulb that is near the end of its life can cause the ballast to run a little hot... but the bulb I had problems with was 4 years old and should have been retired at 2, lol!
Also I want to say that light in the red spectrum is naturally more heat energy than in the blue... but I'm not any sort of expert and may be talking out my butt...
I believe they are about the same. I think it's just the colour that makes one think in a seasonal sense. I had a 250W MH vegging my NFT system some years back in a confined space. when I switched to HPS, my hygro max/min meter was still giving similar readings...
When I go in the garden, which is illuminated by a total of 3kW of HPS, I feel like throwing some sand on the floor, folding out the deck chair and rolling my trousers up while putting my feet in a bowl of water simulating the sea/beach... The amber throw of the mid summer :)
