Pic 3: AK clone mom.....doing terrific and you cant even tell where we took the three clones from her. We just put her in a three gallon pot at the beginning of the week and she's already got roots coming out the bottom of the pot so we had to thin her out and slow her down somehow and decided we might as well take a few kids. :wtf:
this is something you've probably already found a way to deal with but i use tooth picks and wooden skewers as props as you did in those rapid rooter plugs.
mine went moldy on me which, in my noobness, spread and killed my first batch of seedlings.
since then i have learned to take each skewer and roll it and scrape it along a bar of soap, coating it with a layer of soap, the mold won't grow on the soap and the soap won't hurt the plants

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
wh, what are those clones in? how do they work? where do i find them? thanks

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Shove- they are RapidRooters. Next time you are down 91, get off at exit 4 and go into Putney Village- Liquid Sun is right behind the laundromat across the street from Basketville and keeps them in stock cheap. They work awesome. IF I had to make a list of 'top 5 grow products I could not live without or cob up some other way', they would be right up there with calmag, pH indicator drops, and high-CFM blowers, lol!
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Shov the RR's ROCK. They are like cool little sponges that hold your plants or seeds and have all sorts of beneficial bacteria and mycorr.....etc...(all those things that Stinky and Rhizome always talk about :wtf:) and I use them to start everything....seeds and clones both. You can just as easily pop them into a hydro bucket as a dirt plant and like Stinky I couldn't be caught without them either.

This is a rocking log WH. Lots of little lessons within these pages. It looks like you can save the stalks when you harvest and use it for fire wood next season!!;)
Thanks for sharing...now i must continue to read...

I like that WW in hydro. Sucks that it didn't bulk up like you expected... did the mother you cloned it from yield a lot?

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Wow, a whole bunch of people stopped by! Hi everyone and thanks for reading.
Well here's the latest scoop. Fang is finishing.....she stopped drinking a gallon a day and quit using her nutes so we've put her on straight water.
We've come to the conclusion that we simply didn't give her enough nutes and I wasn't paying enough attention to catch it earlier. While we took her to the top of my nute schedule (1350ppm) which has always done fine before we are thinking that with the new net pots we need to go HIGHER nute wise......there's no buildup in the medium to burn the roots (this is simply PONTIFICATING at this point). But when I finally DID get around to paying better attention to the plants I discovered that she was taking 1300 nutes and eating them down to 1100....daily...(and include a FRESH GALLON OF 1300 nutes added daily as well in that calculation) she needed MORE than we were giving is what I'm thinking. We're going to trying up to 1500-1600 this next grow (we have another Brainstorm about 3 weeks old ;) and this time check ppms daily to see if we need to adjust things better with the new equipment. The only real conclusion I've come to here is that she needed more nutes....most likely due to the net pots and lack of fert buildup because everything else she had double of.....all the way through including space AND lighting.
We would LOVE everone's else's PONTIFICATIONS on this as well as it HAS left us scratching our heads a bit. The plant is big, beautiful and perfectly healthy......just not a very good yield. Whattup with that?
Thoughts everyone??

Yeah sounds like the water/nute usage would be perfect if you bumped it up to around 1600ppm. And if you're using clones from the same mother next time and still no big yield then maybe time to get another mother?

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
My opinion: You should take them up to 1600-1700, checking PPM and PH religiously 2x daily. Change nutes weekly, flushing for 24 hours each time. Say 10 hail mary's for each oz you desire to achieve, do a rain dance, and send a $250 check each week to MVP....

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Well its too late for Fang but whenever I've gone above 1400 in the past I've gotten burning.....no matter what strain I'm growing which is why I didn't try this time. All my better plants (including my two top producers) were given no more than 1350 in nutes at any point during the grows and anytiime I tried to raise that they would burn. I wonder now if that is due to the fert build up in my medium which MAY BE why I need to use higher numbers these days. Hmmmmm........
MVP....can I just send straight monopoly money....?? :D

GD this statement really is what got me to thinking.....our WW mom was only a so so yielder.....I was unfamiliar with what a light feeder the WW was and so went pretty light on the nutes with her (about 700-800 through most of bloom) and she came out nice and healthy.....but without the huge yield we expected as well.
Now with these two pics: The mom is the big one in the huge bucket but she only yielded about 5 and 1/2 oz......pretty UNIMPRESSIVE for a plant that size. Her CLONE HOWEVER.....also in hydro etc we upped the nutes to the very edge of nuteburn (in the case of a WW that turned out to be approx 1000ppm) and she tossed out buds triple in size to her mother with a final yield of 3 and 1/2 oz on a plant ONE THIRD THE SIZE!! So it HAS TO BE the nutes!! (we hope....!!!!.) Interesting that a ppm of 200-ish can make such a difference in yield at finish.
HMMMMMMMMMMM :wtf:
Thoughts all??

Question for you Hound: What strain are you gonna use for your next attempt for the LB grow? IMO genetics are the key.
Personally, I just finished the Strawberry Cough and Grand Daddy Purple and if I were trying to grow an elbow, I would choose different strains. I love the results from both but they are not typically big yielders.
I suggest a known producer that is an aggressive feeder... in my experience it would be Black Domina or the new Black Kush beans (Black Domina x Master Kush) I picked up a while back. BTW, I just cracked some Big Bud beans to see how much I can yield when I set up my new digital 600 HPS next month...

Well right now we have the following list:
Fang
cotton candy
Ak -47 clone
power plant in soil
WW in soil
Arjans Strawberry Haze
in the bloom room. Fang and the WW are both almost finished (i'd say within a week for both.....)
In veg under 250w mh we have a Master Kush and another Brainstorm that are both about 3 weeks old and a brand new SLN x NH that just popped (that one is still on suicide watch....). (btw...yieldwise Brainstorm is supposed to be a HUGE yielder....I know X-Crispi's best yied ever was off of a SNL x NH....19 oz....) and the Brainstorm is a close relative. I really think we just blew it this grow with the nutes and the new net pots etc.........I was contemplating aiming with the Master Kush but it will probably be an SNL x NH we'd have the best bet with yield wise. I remember one of our MK's finished like it was in a speed race or something and no matter WHAT we did we couldn't slow it down so the yield was compromised due to the super speedy finish. Don't know if Kushette's seeds will be the same way but it wouldn't be surprising if they were would it?
And under T5 lights we've got 2 Ak47 clones rooting (lost one when I dropped it and broke it) that are both looking very good, 2 SNL x NH seedlings in soil that are doing well also, our AK47 clone mom that is absolutely going NUTS and two power plant clones. One I just topped for the second time (going to be a clone mom....;)) and the other will be ready to bloom in about a week or two.
SO......
It's 103 today (100 yesterday) and I've completely given up the idea of an outdoor grow this year. We WILL be trying some lovely seeds that were storked to us by a very good friend like the super silver haze seeds and Black Domina seeds I have CAREFULLY kept until we can pop them indoors....in soil......under the T5's...which will be soon I'm sure.

hey, another alaskan! you got the blueprints for that cool drying tub on here anywhere? that looked handy.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
We went ahead and took about the top 1/4 on her so we could get better light to the bottom because UNLIKE the top buds the bottom half has a fair way to go. I think the rest will take about another week.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
When guesstimating the amount while "hanging on the vine" what we thought was about an ounce actually turned out to be 46 grams.....quite a lot more than we had figured. Upon getting "up close and personal" we started to see why.....the buds are literally COVERED with goo!!
Here are four macros we took today....each one increasing the zoom by a bit. Interesting isn't it?

Is it strange that I got all tingly down there while looking at those pictures? Dang - I'm either a sick, twisted individual, or this dang leisure suit is really too tight! In all seriousness, despite the hyperbole, I am absolutely amazed by Fang. I know she did not yield what you had hoped, but I cannot wait until your next grow to see if increasing your nutes will indeed be the solution due to your larger net pots. Damn - too many years of regurgitating what I learned in school has led to simple short-term memorization. I need to really study hydro, as it used to mean everything in college.
Sorry for taking your log to ramble. I'm pretty Gumby'd Up about now. I should go home soon. Be good out there! Aloha and Goodbye

Lovely bud pics, Mrs. Hound!

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
jake I'm wondering if it could both....the suit AND the gumby....and maybe the photos too. :D
We harvested our first "real" soil plant a couple days ago. Here are a few pics of her in her final hours......before death and mutilation. I love growing.......:D :D
She's yielded 36 grams dried so no complaints from us.......especially since she's definitely a "practice grow" and we did have some issues with ph toward the end so we feel pretty confident we will improve with future grows.

WH, sorry for rambling on and for my off-color comments. I was a bit out of control last night. That is a really beautiful soil-grown plant. From looking at her, I'm surprised she didn't yield more; but 1 and 1/4 ounces, or thereabouts, isn't too bad. What type of strain was she? How about a smoke report?
Sorry again - I'll try to contain myself from here on out; sometimes it's hard looking at all of these gorgeous ladies! And, there is something about ladies growing ladies - I don't know. I'm going to get myself in trouble here, so I'd better go again.
Be good out there!

You and I both. I've been away from your thread far too long. You have a lot of really cool things going on. I have more to read to catch up, and I gotta run again real soon, but let me just say that I definitely hear ya on the fluoros. After 6 years of insisting all HID is the way to go, I am seriously considering trying to sell all my MH equipment. I would keep the HPS, which I believe is essential for flowering, but all MH could easily be replaced with fluorescent lighting.
I am very pleased at the growth rate during the veg cycle of my plants on all fluoro. Using the right colors makes a huge difference, but once you figure it out, you may see no need to spend the extra money to run MH. Anyone interested in a 400W switchable ballast, a 400W electronic ballast, sockets, bulbs, etc?

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Hey Opie! Glad to see you.....hope you and yours are all well. :)
If you are serious about selling.....shoot me an e mail.....everything depends on the price imo.........;)
Well Fang is done. We took her down today and buzz-sawed her. I'm pretty sure she did NOT have enough nutes during flower to push her to greatness (witness all the lovely color changes on her leaves due to her using the nutes for bud production) but hopefully MINI-FANG will be able to step up to the plate next and hit a homer with an increased nute schedule. Understand we're NOT unhappy with her harvest at ALL......just want MORE MORE MORE!!!!! :D
She's VERY sweet and citrus-y smelling.....almost like some sort of orange or lemon liqueur or something. Rather unusual imo (almost sickeningly sweet :wtf:) but that's not nearly as impressive as the cyrstally crud just covering her buds.
Afraid to guess-timate anything but w'e're thinking maybe 5-6 oz.....kind of conservative but better than counting invisible chickens again.... :wtf: :smokin:

Hello Wh....i just want to say nice work....Those are some beautiful autumn colors and the buds look so delicious...
I'm really impressed and envy the way you and Mr. Hound grow these gorgeous plants...thanks for this great log...:hippy:
Which will be the next plant you gonna flower??

wow, that is one supersized mass of mj. and it sounds delicious. we'll have the final report in what...three or four weeks? I'm trying to dry and cure but the weather has been so damn humid it's making it hard really. bud is smelling softer and sweeter but it's eleven days drying and it hasn't gotten any dryer since day six or seven.

The rich get richer, because enough is never enough! 5 to 6 ounces off that beautiful lady isn't too shabby! But, I can't wait for you to hit the elbow on a single plant! I'm rootin' for ya - HA HA HA (that's my wife's style joke - a good ole pun).
What did you use to cut and trim Fang - boltcutters? That's a dang stump you have left - you'll need a dang bobcat to pull it outta the netpot!
Congratulations on your incredible grow, my friend! Also, I'm glad you are not offended by my oftentimes off-color sense of humor.
Take good care out there!

Hey Hound et al,
I'm looking into some T5's... what do you recommend? The 2 ft unit is the only one that fits my area, so I'm considering the New Wave 4 bulb or 8 bulb running cool/6500k Agrosun tubes.
Any comments/advice would be helpful...

Hey MVP.....
any fires down your way? What's the weather doing?
Oh I would so LOVE to help you but th light bulbs CAME IN the reflector already....didn't even have to screw them in. The bulbs are very small and thin looking and get a bit hotter than I expected but the plants really love it. Opie is the one to ask or Stinky.....(or Rhizome if he's around.....) We literally bought like good robots what we were told to buy. :D
Here's the one we bought......?covers a 2 foot by 4 foot area.
You want to cover 2 x 4 feet?
