Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
we have been using the roots too....seems just as hot and tight as FFoF alone...seems to be my only issue i guess...Stuck finger in pot...packed n wet still, so there ya go!
Gonna drill hella holes in it today, and add perlite to the clones that are getting transplanted soon
thanks to all for the help, I am sure this rootbound/water-logged issue will solve the rest, everything was tip-top other wise. temp, Ph, rh...

certainly nothing as light, but there are a lot of things you can mix with your soil to help it get air.
pumice or expanded clay, though the latter will retain more moisture, so don't use with much vermiculite, if any. Also there is crude perlite, which is not expanded and more the color of soil. Don't know where to find it.
-
Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
Hey veggii, what about spreading a bunch of perlite out on a sheet of cardboard and spray painting it soil color? Spray lightly as to not fill in the holes. I know, I'm definitely outside of the box.
Oh yeah, what I do about perlite standing out is to mulch or cover it with some dead grass or leaves. Mulching has lots of other benefits anyway.

Mo' betta, spray inside da box, ya?
Dat stuff is skittery.

And, if you don't cover it with something it tends to rise to the surface and blow away
No stress about perlite.
It's not gonna trigger Leo, the louse.
It's a very common item.
Something you find around the house.:D
Gardeners have been fluffing their soil with it for 30+ years.
Don't know if it's effective for blocking gnat n midges though.
Its much more usefull mixed with the dirt,
When using LEDs, us cheap buggahs won't waste watts.
I always used something white or reflective to cover those dirty pots.
I'm using CDs now to cover my rockwool and hydrotron.
Stops algae, reflects lots of light and annoys bugs.
Looks pretty  too.
Ciao fo' now.

sounds like a stellar idea! changing color would work!! hmmmm maybe soak in gallon of sun tea ?? turn it brown maybe? that could work

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
Thanks guys!! Think the 3-4 days of tropical coverings on the pots took care of said midges and such..
The Church went into a WELL drilled Gro-Depot 5 gal bucket, with Roots Organic and added about 40% perlite to said soil. Loosened up the rootball a bit and set her in...she should be fine
All the other pots also got 8-14 3/4in holes drilled in the pots, and the sand taken off, Im sure it wasn't helping the waterlogged issue...All the dirt mix in the other pots are PACKED...So some skewer stabbin will be going on in those pots tonight...

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
Feel free to chastise, but I went hari-kari on these root balls with some thin wooden skewers. Had to. The root balls were all ROCK hard...You were right again stinks:greenthumb:
So with all the extra 3/4in holes, and the stabbing, the rest of the girls should be fine till harvest...I hope.
The Church definitely should recover...
They all got a LIGHT feeding this morning too, not enough to drain out even
whiskeytango
15 of the 18 clones I took are rooted and going strong...I already FIMed the mother potentials, going bush/bonsai for the mums...So I guess ALL is not lost if worst case scenario occurs...

good sounds like your back on track, keep a eye on them tho just incase!
you had fun stabbin them didn't you!! lol

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
Spray painting perlite will do a couple things:
-Make it less porous and change its physical properties
-Introduce a potential source of toxins into your system. If you don't take paints/solvents seriously, google 'hydrohut syndrome'... that wasn't even in CONTACT with actual plants...
Vermiculite is brown and less visible as a waste product. It's not as good as raw perlite, but hella better than painted perlite.
-
Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
I would have to agree with Stinky, wouldn't painting the perlite defeat it's purpose...
D:S5:
-
Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
For the record, that was a side conversation, I have no intentions of painting perlite...lol

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
I thought they were removing vermeculite from the market because of health/asbestos issues. Anyone heard anything along that line about perlite as well?
-
Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
I knew that Whiskey, I should have directed it to I think vegii was the one lookin to camo his perlite. sorry for the confusion, if any...
So were you guys serious, I recall a mention in some thread about the the stealth crew considering a future hydro grow... A hydro/led/lst... I'd subscribe to that thread in 2 tenths of a heartbeat...
Keep being good w/ the ladies

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
Haven't heard of anything with the vermiculite or perlite, but a while back the owner of one of the hydro stores in town told me that she talked to a sales rep and they told her that higromite had some asbestos in it... Don't have any proof to back that up, I have looked online to see if I can find any info but have had no luck

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
Yes, yes...between WHs gargantuans, and Stinks suggestions/success has gotten me to CONSIDER getting wet...
I know, I know, I give dro guys shit alot...but I am learning more and more about it. And I can still keep my medicine organic, just shorten flower times and clean up a lot less.
Keep your eyes peeled D4.....:greenthumb:

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
In general, you should ALWAYS wear a dust mask when mixing media, no matter what it is, and also keep a spray bottle handy to mist it and keep the dust down. Asbestos is dangerous when it becomes airborne; keep your medium damp and your face covered and you are pretty safe.
I got the worst double sinus infection of my life from mixing bat guano and mycostim without a mask once... 6 weeks later, I had learned my lesson. :(
-
Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
SnS,
I'd love to see you give hydro a try. I know you wouldn't be disappointed. My advice would be to just do something small and simple at first to check stuff out and get the hang of it.
Stinky,
Most people don't realize how dangerous guano is. Since there are so many safe alternatives I don't even consider using it due to the health risks. Anyone handling it should have a full hood respirator. Don't look at it, and don't breath while near it. Research this shit if you don't believe me.
veggi,
I know my perlite changes color after a few feedings, it gets brown. Maybe a nute soak?
-
Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
You aren't kidding about using a mask and it probably won't hurt to wear gloves too.
Perlite doesn't really turn brown after waterings and feedings but it definitely gets less white and seriously unless you are planning to use it straight in a clearing with nothing but pure dark soil no one is going to notice it.
-
Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
I've been using stuff from home depot. I forget the name, but it comes in a yellow bag. its a vegetable and herb garden mix (not potting mix). it's just peat moss, perlite, and dolomite lime. has has a small amount of nutes already in it, but its minimal. then I put it in a plastic tub from wally world and mix in a little organic fertilizer, more lime, perlite, and vermiculite, and add liquid karma to some water and moisten. then let sit for 2-3 weeks and it should work fine. I didn't have any problems with 20 plants.

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
I'll keep my eyes peeled for the SNS dro show Stealth... I agree w/ Opie you won't be disappointed...It will just complement the fact that your already good w/ the ladies, and have a shrek pigmented appendage on your hand that isn't a finger...lol...

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
In over a decade of growing, I have never gotten wet. But I may be trying a DWC with the next batch of clones.
Got a lot of pics to take and show you guys, I have been slackin there. The plants seem to have bounced back nicely, We have 2 mom candidates from the HKxBI, that are OH SO FROSTY already, yield and smoke will judge the keeper...
15 of the 18 clones taken have rooted and are starting veg phase, so they will go in the flowering room, except the mums to be soon.
None of the AK made it (BOOOO!!!!!!!), but we will try that again hopefully. Stork got stoned and missed the house, lol.
Update tomorrow morning....

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
Hey, all hows it going I have learnt a bit about perlite in past couple days, most off it is harvested rite here in the Sierra Nevada's and in its raw form its color looks like rock. perfect for what I am trying todo(not trigger the sheriff living next door),but not sure how good the air properties in that form.they harvest it in that form(ore) and bake it in a oven approx 3000* and it pops into the white stuff we use for soil, kool huh. they say its properties are like glass and it also makes for anti-fungal! I might try tea to deaden up the bright color.
yo WT hows the pics comin, lets see some frothy frost i'll be checkin in the morn for some...PORN
dro,dro, dro,dro,dro woo-ps got stuck lol too baked :D

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
Girls are lookin lovely again...Veggii, I used a 3/4in paddle bit to drill holes in the sides and bottoms of the pots...made about 7-12 extra holes per pot...
First pic is the 15 clones, dont have a regular light in there for pics yet
clones are:
2 SB1
4 Church
9 HKxBI 1-5
Second 2 pics are HKxBI #2 and #5 respectively. These are my 2 choices for mums...Smoke and yield will be the final decision between the 2.
4th pic is the new 4 60w T12s added for schnitz n giggels
5th pic is the AMAZING HKxBI #2 top going strong!!!

Other than the clones that are mums to be, the rest will be in the flowering room in a week to 10 days...

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
Not the dreaded T12's lol. Get some T5's and watch your results explode. Looking good

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
Got the lights free...will see what I gotta do to get the fixtures to take T5s...Do I need another ballast?
whiskeytango
-
Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
Ya you will need a different ballast and different end caps for the lights. I have never retro fit T12 for T5 but someone here I'm sure has. I use a Sunlight Supply 8 tube one.
Puts out 40,000 lumes and makes 20" bushes in a little under 4 weeks from clones w/low heat. I then pop w/HPS and get great results. I also have 100 watts of T5's in with my 100 watts of LED and the T5's make the led veg room expload.

Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
Mornin WT ,BD they are looking happy campers! I see you got a pic with the leds on LuV that;) I have retro fitted some T12 fixtures to T5 and I have those 2 same HD $9 T12 Light fixtures I'm thinking of retro-fitting. Its not to complicated have too drill a couple holes, fit new ballast and install some T5 Lamholders Done, oh wire it up! they do get quite warm tho .. I can help you futher if you want but those T12's are running much cooler and prolly work well with the Leds
oh before I forget that one plant looks like gonna be a big a** bud!
-
Episode 3...Revenge of the LED
SnS, sorry about the AKs, what a bummer. There's nothing wrong with T-12s, in fact they have their advantages. They cost more to run than T-5, but the initial investment is much less, and they run cool unlike T-5. You can let the plants grow right into the lights with only minimal heat stress. T-5's will fry em. The most important thing to consider is the color of light. A 6000K will do way better than the more common 4100K shop light, which is right in the middle of the dead zone for chlorophyll activity.
retrofit, schmetrofit.
PS: My avitar wants to know if your new one can come over for a play date.

Thanks guys!!
Opie, mine said only if you got a few fatties rolled up!...lol
Thanks WH!!! She would've been MUCH bigger, but since we took 6 clones off her, there she is...Her replacement will be in a 5 gal...so be lookin for that monster!!!
Opie, thanks for confirming what I figured. When I did my numbers, the T12 seemed do be a DAMN good fit with the 3 procyons. And the girls sure as shit seem to like it, so nothing changes there... Think Db went and got the 6k bulbs already anyway...
Veggii...that is the HKxBI #2...DEFINITELY a clone made mum already going of her:greenthumb:
