TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
We bought this Econogrow mh light a couple days ago and put it up. So far we really like it but it's pretty heavy and the side with the internal ballast took TWO yoyos to hold that side up correctly.
The heat is pretty much nil unless you actually touch the reflector itself. The seedlings LOVE it so far.

Well dogs aside horses are a LOT along the same line (just nineteen times bigger and more stupid) ....you get on a horse believe me you are TEACHING it SOMETHING....either good or bad and I'm sure dogs are the same way....the interaction is there no matter what.
I HAVE seen my share of "horse whisperers" in action and they are indeed as impressive as they seem......they'll have those horses dancing around on one foot with one quiet word...and again....never a true hand raised. The only time this is suspended is if the horse actually tries to hurt you (malicously) then kick the shit out of him. If you can that is, lol.
These new styles of training ARE the wave of the future....they WORK. And they are much more healthy for both trainer AND trainee then the styles you and I were raised with. They need to go through a generation or so to be imprinted but I for one am THRILLED to see the changes coming in this field.....even if I couldn't do it myself if my life DEPENDED on it with either a dog OR a horse.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Stealth....clarification.....
the 400w will run either the mh bulb OR the hps bulb at one time....you have to switch them back and forth.....400w at once only. That's the way I understand it.....are you thinking something else?
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Aw yes, the ol' 2 yoyo technique. To be outdone only by the 3 hot wheels set up.
I've got to know why you went with HID for seedlings instead of something a little less... drastic, like fluorescent. I've found that my seedlings don't like HID light unless it's a mile away. Also is that plexiglas around them or what? Is that to help keep the warmth and humidity in?
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Is that plexiglas around them against the weed eating killer cats??
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Ding! We have a winnner....Zeb! We've lost two seedlings to those bastards and we're sick of it! :wtf:
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Opie I know exactly what you mean.....both about the hot wheels AND the HID. :D
We WERE using some flouros but they just don't have the footprint we want. I thought the 400 would be easy on the seedlings but it wasn't as much as I had hoped. The 250 seems juuuust right.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
i could get a switchable set and use a 250mh and a 400hps yeah? if its strong enough for the 400....

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Your asking a different q now......I'm pretty sure I read something about not interchanging different sized ballasts/bulbs but I'm not 100% positive.
Stealth if you're going to start a fair amount of plants you most likely WOULD want the 400 vs 250.....when you think about it a 2' x 2' area really isn't very big.....while it works for us remember we've only got 4 plants going under it at any one time maximum.

Sorry, no. New technology is coming out all the time, but as far as I know your ballast must still match your bulb wattage.

First photo: left to right.
Sour Northern Lights x Neville's Haze.
Arjan's Strawberry Haze.....this gal has stayed very short which kind of surprised me for a haze.....She doesn't seem to be a backwards plants or anything.....just shorter than I thought she would be.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Our two remaining WW clones....one in soil and one iin hydro.
We JUST transplanted Sal (the soil WW) from a three gallon bucket to a five gallon....and HOPE that's the last one she needs. I've tried to follow Stinky's advice here and do several transplants as opposed to just starting Sal in a larger pot and guess what.....Stinky was right! (shocker !)....the plants DO like it.
The WW in hydro was topped once and turned a week earlier than Sal in the soil who was topped twice.
PS.....I originally was going to make Sal a cloner mother but have pretty much ditched the constant cloning idea......the WW's are NOT quite the heavy yielders I'd like for a clone mommy.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Who besides me thinks "Sal and the Soils" would make a great name for a band? :D
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Sal and the Soils.....a 70's indie rock band?? :D
So Wh, tomorrow will be day 20 of the flowering for Fang....was there a big explosion?? or just a small one??
And is the PP still alive?? or you chopped it up??
I'm really interested to see how that ASH will go for ya, it's form the same breeder as the Church....it's strange cause i read so much bad reports, that the breeders genetics are crap, and the plants like to herm., but also on the other hand i seen beautiful frosty buds, which got a great smoke report too....we shall see...
And nice work whit that soil WW plant...i know, this is a BIG success for ya...:D
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Pictures actually taken on day 19.
She just starting I'm afraid.....but already getting rather beastly isn't she? :D
We've topped this girl TWICE remember....and she still is taller than anything else in the room.
(Zeb....thanks for the nod about Sal...you're right that she was a BIG accomplishment for me. :))
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Zeb we bought the Church seeds from Kind Seed co...and will NEVER buy from them again.....seed # 4 is a bust as well....despite scuffing and making sure the shell cracked....the seed still just sits there. If anyone else out there has any Church seeds I wish you the best of luck with them.....better than ours at least. :wtf:
The ASH originally came from Greenhouse seeds.....power plant is from Dutch Passion.
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Ok I'm not walking all the way across the room and looking at the calendar so I'm going to guess day 17? I'll double check a bit later to be sure......
She's improved alot but HAS turned out to be one of those plants that grows backwards and inwards creating a tangled mess everywhere. We're also still chasing a certain amount of yellowing leaves and yellow/brown spots on the lower leaves despite SEVERAL heavy duty flushes (the last of which was about 4 days ago) and stopping the the dehumidifier in the evenings. NOTHING we've done has changed the course of it......lowering ppms fairly drastically (to about 2/3 of what I would normally go by) SLOWS it....but doesn't stop it completely.
Zeb.....speaking of.....I think a huge thing about breeding and breeders is stability.....pretty much when you plant a seed you can be fairly sure about what will come up (and that it WILL come up) and what it will be like and that the better breeders' seeds perform in a much more stable manner. ;)

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Wow...Fang is BIG & beautiful....looks real healthy....
It sux that the PP isn't growing like it supposed to, it looks like it's not gonna get bigger than the DD or the WB...this sux:(, PP is soooooo good, i think you gonna love it, if it's gonna yield something...
The Church is originally from GreenHouse too, sorry to hear that they didn't hatch...i have ordered a 5 seed pack of it, but i'm not sure if i gonna get it too....
What will be your next strains?? If you are looking for some sativa dominant strains, how about S.A.G.E, or some nice Trainwreck??
Or maybe Shantibaba/Mr.Nice seedbank's Super Silver Haze...i think they make the best SSH....

just wanted to say hi and that i found, subscribed and have been following this thread since my first day here, lol. i didn't have anything to say because you so obviously know way more than me that i was a little intimadated. anyway, thanks for your encouragement and your willingness to share your progress with us newbies.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Well we may have gotten an old set of Church seeds ....I got a few from X-Crispi originally and it popped right out (I think I LOST the other seed....)
And that brings up Zeb why we're kind of limiting what we grow......we'd much prefer growing feminized seeds indoors and (especially now) I personally only trust one or two seedbanks (based on my own limited experience) so .......sigh. :(
Ps....I heard a little stork may drop a few kids off around our house.....AK and 47.....we shall see.....;)

d4 thanks very much for the kind words and thoughts.....Mr Hound has NOT received a phone call stating otherwise so we're hopeful about the tests......his Dr had said he would call that same day if there were bad results.....of course....maybe he just lost our phone number LOL!
And d4...very sorry to hear about your loss as well.
Stealth I'm ready to take a baseball bat to the power plant. :wtf: One thing though....GREAT smell (minty?) from it that is wonderful....can't quite place it but a very nice scent.

Please explain. I've never understood this. It's like only filling your car 1/4 full the first time, then 1/3, then 1/2, etc., since she seems to like it. Why? How can a plant like a small container better than a big one? Is it just more cozy? Does it like the feel of the container against it's roots, as opposed to free range?

Hey lucky me, I have a church seed. Just kinda showed up in my mail. So, could you go into more detail on scuffing? I fear my seed my have came from Kind Seed as well, so any advice you have for getting it going would be great. Do you just take a plastic kitchen scratcher to it? Or sandpaper? Cracking the shell? Do you do this by soaking it overnight?
I too have bought seeds from Kind Seed, and was very satisfied, though their prices are a little pricey. One of the few places that will ship to the U.S. Nearly all of my seeds hatched and were healthy, but I didn't try any hard to grow varieties. I've never tried anything fancy like scuffing, cracking or soaking. I've had the absolute best luck by simply planting the seed in dirt, and keeping it warm and moist. I've had less luck using the paper towel method, but it does seem to work pretty well and many people like it.
I'm going to plant some seeds in a few days, once I get some cuttings started again. I'll let you know how the church works out.

Come on now, there's no need for that. We are all learning, even the "experts". Not trying to take away anything away from you WH. Notice what an expert she is, and still having questions, still having problems.

OPIE!!
HELP! I received some GORGEOUS cuttings in the mail....no IDEA where they came from.....just dropped in.....and since they were here I scarified them a bit and put them in some dip and grow and into some RR's and into the cloner......just because they happened to be there you know. (Ps...I think they came from Fort Knox because the packaging was AMAZING!..... Seriously you could have shipped a human baby safely in that wrapping and packaging.)
But now.....they wilted BADLY.....I've put them on heat and I THINK they're coming back but I can't tell.....can anyone else think of anything I should do? These are seriously BEAUTIFUL cuttings...bushy....green.......I'd HATE to lose them..... will keep folks updated!

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Well frankly I looked through the customer reviews for Kind Seed before I ordered.....they got EXCELLENT reviews which was the only reason I chanced it. Wah.
I did what Stinkster told me which was take a nail file and gently scrape the outside a bit on the seed and that worked very well. I've also heard (but never tried) putting them in a matchbox with some sandpaper and shaking it......that's just something I heard but I imagine sand paper would work if you were pretty gentle.
It DID crack the shell after soaking when I did that but the seed still went nowhere.....so I popped one side off and put it back......three days later there was a TEENY taproot and then seed number three quit. :wtf:

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Opie Stinky wrote a thread on it somewhere.....I've always been of the mind that starting them in larger pots is better (in my YEARS of soil experience :D) but after Sal I'm sold on the idea. Let me see if I can find Stinky's thread....she always explains things well.
Ps.....Before I forget....the cuttings have improved quite a bit.....except I lost two; one in the scarifying and one that just didn't come back well after the stress. The rest look quite improved and even have a nice little smell to them. :)

Here's that thread.......Sal seemed to take a happy little jump each time I put her in a bigger pot and it really kept the amount of nutes I had to use down due to adding fresh soil at regular intervals AND the ph buffers in the freshly added soil assist with keeping the ph stable so I honestly never had to check it.

May i ask what kind of cuttings you received WH??? :D

Ha ha, you're right Zeb I completely forgot to say.....they are AK 47. When boxed up they had no smell but once I got them out BAM! Pretty strong scent especially since they're not even a whole plant (although the cuttings were so lovely it looked like there was a whole plant there....)
I'll post a pic or two later......if you hadn't seem them at their worst point you might not appreciate their glory at this time.....:D
