Hip Hop & Rap wasn't just responding to the masses, it was more of a direction for the masses too. Public Enemy: Don't Believe The Hype... People followed the music not the music followed the people, gee or was it bi-directional? Old skool Hip Hip & Rap is like soul music with spice, even down to many of the beats. Today Hip Hop is responding to the masses in a way that indicates the masses don't know what the hell they want so rappers try and sell an album any which way they can. Sex sells so thas a start! Listeners of legal radio broadcasts listen to what sells and what has been sold, and thas as far as their control extends. The diameter of their listening experience equates to what has been sold in particular record shops. The availabe artists in mainstream record outlets are restricted by the music industry on the whole. You can guarantee that by design, bull shit will be all over the mainstream charts because the restrictions apply before an artist is even signed to a label. The stuff that some of us listen to which we think is important to us is utter crap. If a materialistic lifestyle is what many desire, and musical artists are playing up to peoples desires and advertising it in their music, then like a vicious circle the culture of the listener will not change until they read this thread.

hey i am with you in that the REAL mainstran crap - i mean rap is just a bunch of retarded people throwin stupid meaningless lyrics on a stupid meaningless beat, -(at least thats wot it sed to me) but u gotta hav alotta respect for those who you may class as mainstream rappers that have been in it for a long time like eminem that seem to have been forgotten about, it doesnt matter what you say, eminem is a man of many talents, a genius even, and i listen to his music as much as i do tupac or dre, a few of the newer rappers are really goin far with it now, - eg obie trice, D12 and i for one congragulate their success - ps i dont hav a clu wot i jus writ, n really cant be bothered to read it agen so, understand wot u can

I think part of the problem with hip hop these days is, so many artists are just complete morons. The shit out there now has one point and one point only, destroy the minds of the youth and make them the next dumb ass wannabe MC flowing on about the ice on his wrist. Give me some more Nas, Mos Def, Cypher Complete , ya know the lyricists.. not the iceonthewristisists and that will keep me happy with what I consider hip-hop. I got pleanty of concoisness dancehall and roots reggae artistes that will keep on releasing something new month after month year after year, and it will be good shit every time

i dont really give a shit about the lyrics in rap music because the real lyricists are out making real music. some rappers can write some songs but there are far better lyricists in pretty much every genre of music. i just love listening to them talk about doing drugs and fucking them hoes after getting them high. i just laugh my ass off when i hear it and think holy shit these guys got some girls high fucked them then got high themselves then wrote a song about it and millions of people gave them money to hear it. you hafta love it
and good rap lyrics pretty much only talk about the state of inner city living and shit like that there really isnt a broad range that im aware of
