It may sound harsh but it is your own responsibility to protect yourselves from the risks. Peoples relaxed attitude towards the net and trust and the idea that people on the net are any more open or honest and trustworthy than the people in your own street is just ridiculous. I take everything I am told by someone with a large pinch of salt because people like to embelish and make themselves appear better than they are and honesty seems far too often the last thing on the agenda.This and the fact that you only get one persons opinion of the "friend" you choose and thats their own opinion.
If you were to ask me what I think of me and then you asked my friends the same question you would notice we gave slightly different answers and without that "second opinion" you're really taking a massive gamble.

Well, im talking to her again :D
She gave me her phone number. But when i put it in with the area code it dos'nt ring, then i did'nt put area code in, it was a womans voice but it was breaking up like crazy, then when i tried phoning again it was a man's voice, lol. Then 3rd time when it was a man's voice again i asked if she was there, and i think he hung up.. lol? so... that was kinda... confusing.

I just believe that it is naieve to believe Prince (or Princess) Charming is gonna come rescue all the lonely people, also net friends aren't exactly going to give you a hand moving house if they live on another continent, then you have the need for one of them to travel massive distances and give up thier home and life for any real relatioship to have a chance.
Worst case scenario is simple , young lady arrives at destination of loving net boyfriend and the sweetest man she has ever met. Talking in chat rooms is fine but making the mistake in believing you are anything more than words on a screen is foolish and sometimes dangerous.
People on the net are no better than those in real life except for the fact that you can be more selective about when you want contact with them (they can't exactly pop round if they don't know where you live (none of my net mates do)) and thats it.
If I am playing poker on the net one thing I miss is the "tells", that's the little habits people have, like one guy I know who sticks out the tip of his tongue when he's bluffing. Without the "tells" of real life it is impossible to know if you are being sold a good one or a dummy and thats why net friendships and relationships will always be superficial.
Net friends will never replace the real thing.
