When I'm smoking with others and we are using a bowl or bong, I always light a small section on the side of course, but I also tamp the edge of my lighter over the bit I burned to damp out the cherry as soon as I'm done taking my hit. I figure its only polite to keep the bowl as fresh as possible for the next in line. When I have a party I try to have at least one bowl packed or one joint rolled for every two people if we're toking. I like to see my guests really enjoy themselves and get a fair share of the herb I'm providing.
LOL My friends say I have bogarting radar because I can be across the room and know that someone in another mini session is talking and holding the weed hostage instead of passing. I always let them know about it too, but try to make it sound light and jocular instead of an accusation.
I think it comes from my grandmother telling me once that it is always important to be a gracious hostess no matter what the situation, and I've carried that over into toking. I derive pleasure from making other people happy and creating an environment where they can completely relax and enjoy themselves.
Gorillaman's got a pretty decent set of rules goin' on, kinda motivates me to create a complete set of guidelines, perhaps a Reefer Constitution. And while we are on the subject of bowl etiquette, passing direction, Left is Law or Right is Might? The rotation of the bowl is just as crucial to how it's smoked, especially in a larger group, or when smoking a bong.

I never thought of that,usually When I would burn with my freinds back in the day,you just clear your bowl and pass it back for a refill.
