I as well am not trying to say that pink floyd is the greatest band to ever walk the earth, but I am saying that with all the crappy overrated bands out there (i.e. 80's hair bands, boy bands, emo crap, and all the gimmick rock and fake rap thats on mtv to name a few), you decide to choose the beatles and floyd, two of the biggest and most influential bands ever to call the MOST OVERRATED OF ALL TIME. You may not like them, but you have to respect what they did for the music scene. Lastly I never assumed anything about you, so you shouldn't assume that just because I like floyd I don't have my ears in the underground scene. 90% of the music I listen to isn't "radio friendly". And yes I do listen to pretty much all genres, it just depends on my mood. Lately I've been on a jazz, afrobeat and hip hop bender. Jazz to relax and afrobeat and hip hop for more upbeat occasions. I'm makin some brownies and going to see ween tonight. I went to see a great latin jazz/salsa/funk band called grogus last night. Don't assume my musical tastes aren't as diverse as yours just because I listen to floyd.Quote:

Pink Floyd seems to me like there the sell outs of psychedelic rock, and in my eyes thats alot worse than selling out music thats not supposed to be appreciated as an art form.[as opposed to selling out music that had no intention of being something 'groundbreaking']
I mean do you really have to say that mtv music is overrated? i mean you can, but EVERYONE with a half descent music taste understands that. To be quite frank, i dont even acknowledge that garbage as music.
I agree 100% on that. I also agree that a lot of floyds stuff is way overplayed and especially true in high school. Honestly I rarely even listen to floyd that much. I've heard all of there albums so many times, but its still great to put in every now and then when your in the mood.Quote:

You cant say "MTV Music" man....MTV plays all different music...it dont matter if its justim timberlake or fuckin anything else....All of it IS a production of music, and whether its mainstream or not, its a piece of music...it was at some point created by someone...im just saying, a lot of the mainstream music is mainstream because its good shit, and people can recognize it....Not all MTV Music is con music....A lot of the bands did write their own shit...music isnt an argument man....music is for music....why are you worried about bands other people like? Music isnt about who likes what who likes who, and no one gives a shit what you think. Sry but its true...anyone who listens to music has some kind of interest in it so thats why they LIKE it....they dont like it cuz everyone else does....usually if everyone else does, and THEY want to...they will start listening...and if they like it they keep listening if they dont, they stop....its all honest man
system of a down isnt overated btw....they are pretty kick ass
recognize
U2, Pink Floyd, Coldplay anything emo and that fucking junkie mess Pete Doherty.
This the best line in any song by far
in a justim timberlake song he says
"If I wrote you a symphony"
Im sorry, thats the most completely rediculous fucking lyric in any song ever fucking written, the prize goes to timberlake for that one.....fucking stupid
I don't think that pink floyd is overrated its just that there are more bands during the 60's like pink floyd that deserve more credit and fame than pink floyd like the misunderstood or the united states of america
For my money, back in my day, The Cure is the worst band ever. Absolutely unlistenable.
what amazes me is that these mediocre 80s bands are consider great now when inthe 80s they were barely listenable, the cure bein one of themQuote:

For overrated bands I'd go with:
Nickelback (every song is the exact same thing)
Raq (complete rip off of Phish, no originality)
Jack Johnson (not talentless but Xavier Rudd and Ben Harper are much better)

and U2 - F*ck Bono, thinks hes god (not to say i dont appreciate his charitable works) but hes NOTHING special vocally, and U2 is just repulsive music...
The most overrated band ever is definitly Insane Clown Posse & U2. ICP is just so goddamn gay and there songs suck. Bono is the biggest piece of shit ever and I think he is represented perfectly in that South Park episode.
Rock in general is overrated. I could never get high to that shit. But thats just me.

Running to Stand Still
------- -- ----- -----
And so she woke up, woke up from where she was lying still, said I
got to do something about where we're going.
Step on a steam train, step out of the driving rain, maybe
run from the darkness in the night, singing
ah, ah la la la de day
ah la la la de day, ah la la de day
Sweet the sin, but bitter the taste in my mouth.
I see seven towers, but I only see one way out.
You got to cry without weeping, talk without speaking,
scream without raising your voice,
you know I took the poison,
from the poison stream, then I floated out of here, singing
ah, ah la la la de day
ah la la la de day, ah la la de day
oooh, oooh, oooh
She runs through the street with her eyes painted red
under black belly of cloud in the rain
in through the doorway she brings me
white gold and pearls, stolen from the sea, she is raging
she is raging, and the storm blows up in her eyes, she will
suffer the needle chill
she's running to stand still

All of you that hate on U2 must be out of your minds. Yes, Bono is a jackass, but I bet some of you like Metallica despite Lars. Yes, their new stuff kinda blows, it happens when you try and modernize am older band, but then again, there's millions of fans that would disagree with that. BUT, any of their older albums are amazing, whether it's Joshua Tree, War, Rattle and Hum, etc. It's undeniable. Oh, and their live performances are out of this world, I mean, they have their own damn concert movie coming out.
Truth is, most of you don't understand the true nature of music, and that is why your definitions of "overrated" as erroneous. Number one thing to remember about music is: it's a business, always has been, always will. Sooner you realize that, the better. Music for music's sake died with jazz.
i wouldnt really say wu tang clan are overrated, but if you are really putting them up there with some of the bands listed then yes, they most definitely are. same with the roots and sound garden, talking heads, peter tosh, tribe c alled quest, etc. seems to me like you decided what great bands were by looking at t-shirts at the local head shop.Quote:

ok. someone said wolfmother is overrated. compared to most bands out there today, they are amazing. excellent guitar licks, good lyrics, they have a pretty good rock n roll/classic rock feel that is rare among emerging bands. if you are a musician (esp. guitarists) you can respect what they do...they are extremely talented, and aren't exploited on the radio, tv, etc. so for the word 'overrated', not quite sure about that..
fall out boy wins for most overrated.
dragonforce
at least 95% of my friends blow wads into each others mouths over these guys, and to be honest they are lesser friends because of it
Strong statement there. On one hand, I agree that jazz as a genre, in its glory days, was as pure as blues in its glory days. High quality, low hype musical experience. On the other hand, I wouldn't write jazz off as 'dead' quite yet, although crap acts like KennyG dancing around the edges of the genre make me CRINGE.Quote:

As for all the hatin' on U2, pish posh. Old U2 has great musical merit, no matter what you think of the personalities associated with the band. The songwriting is top notch and it's rare to see a band gain both commercial success and earn respect as a political voice. The Joshua Tree is just a stellar album start to finish. Perhaps if you don't like that sort of rock, you won't get as much out of it as someone who does, but it's excellent; IMHO one of the greatest albums ever recorded in any genre.
And you may notice this thread has gotten a hair shorter... we can't be calling names here and the offender ironically got a warning ON THIS THREAD last YEAR... knock it off.
Okay... well if we want to self-destruct over whether a BAND who doesn't even know we exist on the planet is good... I won't stand in the way.
Please do not re-post deleted posts. The same thing will happen to the new one.
Pink Floyd is the best band that ever existed and will ever exist. Its a Plant you are outvoted by millions of fans. They are loved because they are amazing, its a shame you can't see that. Listen again to The Division Bell, Obscured by clouds, Atom heart mother, The final cut, More.. Are you telling me you don't like Shine on you crazy diamond or Echoes?
Most over rated band - The kaiser cheifs
My band 3 Headed Cock. Everyone who hears us hails us as the second coming of Barnabus, but I think were waaaaay overrated.
Oh, but there are so MANY.
The Beatles come to mind. But that's excusable - it was novel and people liked it. It was a new age.
How about Milli Vanilli?
:)
Oh, I know jazz ain't dead, I'm a trumpet player. It's just that commercial music now has lost the thrill of making exciting and bold music, and now bands just chase the dollar. St. Germain did reassure me that jazz is still alive and kicking, and progressing forward. Check our their album Tourist for starters.
I was a music production major and was so disheartened because that was all they preached, "music is a business, we're just trying to get paid like the rest blah blah blah." Business law just made me cry.
Personally I think that because of the limitations of Western music, i.e. the chords and changes used, that music is becoming watered down and repetitive. Ever find yourself where you recognize the bassline of a song? That's my point. After one hundred years of modern music every chord has been played, every chord progression thought up, every rhythm created. Music needs a shake up, a new idea, a spin on what we accept as music. As much as I despise it, John Cage's works could be inspirational to the future. If you're unfamiliar with him, his most famous piece is 4'33". Good luck with that one.
"The first question I ask myself when something doesn't seem to be beautiful is why do I think it's not beautiful. And very shortly you discover that there is no reason."
-Cage

I guess Robert Plant was not a musician, since he mostly sang and only played a bit of harmonica here and there.
Oh, and that probably was sweat mixed in with a bit of tears.;)
A vocalist is indeed a musician, but his vocal talent wasn't nearly on par with the hype that followed him.
Robert Plant had extraordinary vocal talent and deserved every bit of the respect given him.
Here's a question for the music buffs... how many of Elvis' songs were actually written by Elvis? :D
Donno^
But jazz in its true form is as pure as blues in its true form. They are both of the soul. Or at least should be. Its hit or miss with jazz and blues musicians...if theyve got the soul they've got blues, if they just IMMITATE jazz and blues then its gonna sound completely fraudulent. A completely fake work of nothingness. a meaningless composition. you got to have the flow...you gotta find the place where the music makes itself you are just the instrument that plays the instrument. Stevie Ray Vaughan had it.
