TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
i have'nt seen any posts about particular electrical installation your refering to. but glad to give some yes/no answers about circuits. wire sizes and such. not a fed or a narc. carl05478 at msn dot com.
ps
3000 watts isn't a a real lot. An old household service rated at 230 volts 60 amps can safely handle 12,000 watts (peak rating of 13,800 watts)

welcome back crispi, aint seen ya round in a while, WH, I would have to agree with opie, either talk to a few co-ops see if they know a "friendly", or read up and DIY, thats what I do...I have popped the shit outta myself a few times, lol...but it was kinda fun:thumbsup: it was only 110 though...if you do DIY, FLIP THE BREAKERS before ya do anything...lol, or, just get shov:jointsmile:

Crispi uses a 3000 watt power box with breakers and outlets. That might be nice for you, WH. The wiring from your panel to this box would be standard 12/3 romex from a two pole, 20 amp circuit breaker. If you don't have room in your existing panel have it upgraded by an electrician and you will have the room to add this breaker. Watch the electrician and ask questions. <G>
I'm waiting for my harvest before I can let the cable co. in to install phone-TV-internet wiring. Six more weeks???

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Appreciate the info shov...but we're on rotation here so there is no way of clearing the room out. The guy can work OUTSIDE ok.....but not in the room unless we're willing to toss a few good plants (agggggg!!!) and pull the curtains and everything down.....even then we've got seedlings out in the living room.....could slide those into the bedroom but you get the idea......
Is there a way to have someone come out and do some work on the outside panel without him going into the room itself or would that simply be too suspicous to get away with?
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
WH-
I'm just "anti-extension cord" on principle. I think that they're riskier than they're worth, and it's easier to tell folks " Don't use extension cords" than it is to get them to understand when an extension is and is not appropriate.
If it's just a matter of not having headroom on the circuit that your room has been running off- why not just add an outlet to the circuit that you have the extension cord plugged into now, with the wire snaked over to an outlet box in your room? You may not wanna screw w/ your breaker bok, but snaking some wire and adding an outlet are well w/in the purview of a motivated homeowner.
Then you can start scheduling to have a proper power point installed a cycle or two down the road, when the room is empty.
Yer gonna wanna get that room empty for sanitation once in a while.

Hey WH,
You are doing an awesome experiment! I will be watching to see how you make out! As far as elecrtical....I pay people to turn on lights for me, kinda scared of the juice...hehe. Keep up the good work! My grow log is also in intermission due to waiting for beans. Have fun and be safe, Plant

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
I like rhizomes idea if you end up not getting an electrician. If you don't mind crawling under the house and drilling a hole or two, it's pretty easy to run a line off an existing outlet and install a new one. It doesn't have to look pretty. I highly recommend the 1,2,3 Home Depot book for reference, or a simple inexpensive electrical DIY book, also available at Home Depot. If you use a little common sense, electric work doesn't have to be scary, especially if you turn off the circuit breaker first. And like SnS suggests, it's fun to get shocked.
On the other hand, if I were in your shoes and wasn't going to DIY, I would probably anonymously call around and ask what electricians would be willing to be open minded and work on room that serves as a legal grow room for a medical patient. I don't think it would be much of a problem, but I might be worried about the electrician either being a thief, or flapping their jaws to their thief friends.
WH please check your email soon.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Ive done workin this field.
if u must use extension cords, u should use the expensive ones AWG12 or even AWG10 if ur running big loads.
u will find this rating on the cord itself and the package when u buy the ones u really need;)
each main cord should go to a separate circuit in the house,
take the time to identify breakers with as little useage as possible.
u should always try to stay at 75% useage on a breaker.
add up the appliances amps ratings on a circuit.
for a 20 amp breaker, try to stay no higher than 15 amps of useage.
do u follow so far?
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Do I follow??? :S2: HELL NO! I'm having trouble wrapping my teeny brain around the extension cord thing. (I'm scared of them too Rhizome...)
Hey Rock...your thoughts on the solar thing?
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
keep cords short. a 14 AWG (american wire gauge cord)- no more than 1200 watts continuous load. a 12 AWG cord- no more than1800 watts. How's that sound?
As far as protecting a residential circuit like this, the new AFCI (arc flash circuit interuptor) is wonderful piece of mind. This is a special circuit breaker that is now required in living areas of all new homes and major electrical upgrades. The breakers for a single 15 or 20 amp outlet circuit may cost $25-30 bucks at Home Depot. Worth evey penny.
Any questions now?

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
WH, listen, each "appliance" has a load rating in AMPS.
stay away from 14ga (sorry shov) unless its 6 ft in ur room.
12 ga (12 AWG) is the rating u should use for main run to any selected power source,
check ur breaker box, look if its 15 or 20 amp breakers.
then add up all useage on that line.
2 man test.
1 person flicks breakers, whilst other identifies outlets affected by this breaker.
then add up amps on that circuit.
for a 20 amp breaker, try to go no higher than 15 amps.
i can explain deeper if needed.
or
what is not clear?
i will go back and read for solar idea.
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
i can come over and wire up some new runs if needed.
but, let me know and ill check on flights:wtf:
the 20 amp cord will help until u can get someone u trust to hook u up.
honestly i am tempted to just hop a flight,LOL
edit, hmmm, buy me a ticket and the materials???:wtf:

Rock thanks for the very kind offer......unfortunately we've just had some extremely bad family news today that I won't go into but suffice to say our grow will be on the back burner for a few days....but we'll update the log when we are able.
Think kind thoughts for us .....thanks all.

In this country most of our lighting fixtures, TVs stereos, etc. are rated in watts, so that's why I converted the amps to watts. No problem with wiring 1000 watts of light on a 15 amp circuit (which will have 14 gauge wiring. Also, make sure the plug on any cord fits in the recepticle snug. This is very important. Replace any old warn out recepticles.
Also when you shop for an extention cord you'll find that 14 gauge is a very stout cord. The lighter gauges are 16 awg and 18 awg, which you'll find on reading lamps and such. You will not find 10 awg extention cords anywhere around here. 12 gauge is the max. It never hurts to oversize wiring though. Personally, I have an outlet right over the grow with the timer and power strip with a circuitbreaker. No extention cords.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Yesterday to cancer.....very surprising diagnosis that dropped right on our heads pretty much out of nowhere. So much for all my veterinary experience and (ha!) knowledge.
He was only 5 and 1/2 years old.
We are extremely blessed to have had him for the brief time we did.
PS....Mr Hound is having some medical tests done tomorrow as well.....please pray (or think kind thoughts) for normal results for HIS tests for us.
Thanks everyone.

Holy crap you scared me with that title. I am so sorry for your loss, but I'm glad it's not an actual human boy. I lost a dog last year too and I know how bad it sucks. I'm very sorry to hear it. My 4-year-old still just doesn't get it. He keeps asking when we can do things with Copper again. Best wishes to you and yours. Thumbs up to Mr. Hound getting a check up. I hate the thought of going to a doctor or hospital, but I'm glad I had one a few months ago. I found out anemia is what's probably been making me exhausted all the time. (Still gotta look that up.)
-
TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Anemia is a somewhat vague answer......that's kind of like saying he died because he stopped breathing.....
We don't have any human children so our pets ARE our kids but I agree.....animals are NOT people and while we love them and miss them (I'm still crying just thinking about my guy being gone) losing an actual person is MUCH more horrific. So lots of prayers please for some good results for Mr Hound.
Thanks all.

Yeah, I know it's vague. I got another appointment monday to explore this funness in greater detail. Great, more needles.
I certainly did not mean to down-play your loss. I know that people love pets the same as they love people. I was completely med free and not exactly awake yet, and your title just shocked me. I got upset until I scrolled down a little and saw the picture.
Absolutely I will pray for Mr. Hound, and you.

Oh Opie I KNOW you weren't playing down our loss at all.....forgive if I gave you that idea...I actually thought about that when I wrote the title but didn't change it because the title really says whats in my heart about him. :(
Hope you find out whats causing the anemia....i was just talking to someone the other day about anemia in men.....much more uncommon in men then in women...hope all your tests come back with A+ as well.

Hey There WH,
Sorry to hear of your loss. I am a wildlife rehabilitator as well as a horticulturist. I lost my mutt of 14 years last year and still think about him. My Mother's Border Collie broke his leg a month ago and we had to put him down. The saddest days of all...We are thinking of You and Mr. H!! Keep on keepin on!

Sorry to hear about your loss WH.....loosing the loved ones sucks bad, but if your boy had a good life and he felt your and Mr.Hounds love till the end, than that gives some relief, i think....
I wish the best for you and Mr. Hound....

Weedy- I'm very sorry about your loss. I lost my boy a few years back- Some little part of me always expects him to come running when I get home from work, and is always dissappointed when he doesn't.
It's funny- I've lost many people in my life, and been OK w/ it- but I still get teary when I remember a cat.
But he was my best friend, damnnit!
Easier to lose people, because you get to say goodbye, and know that they knew what you meant.
I'm very, very sorry- It's a bitter thing to outlive someone you love.

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Wow....everyone's good feelings and well wishes REALLY help....you guys were the first folks I told even before my family (except Mr Hound of course)
I've had my share of dogs but even then he was QUITE special....one of those things where you know you've had contact with something really spectacular.....he will be very sorely missed.
Thanks again everyone.....you guys are the greatest group ever.
Ps.....Hopefully will have Mr H's test results by Monday....will let everyone know then.

I love the pits and the staffies......just won't have them while I have so many other animals.....but then again I'm not a dog trainer. I had one pit i couldn't do a THING with.....hired a trainer who rolled in and had her doing back flips on command in no time.....never raised a hand to her either. I was NEVER able to train dogs like that so am impressed by those who can. (Ps...within a month she back to normal....needed him around to STAY trained because I just dont KNOW what I'm doing with that stuff.....)

lol....yeah, you gotta have LOTS o time and devotion for the pits...gotta go off topic for a sec...I want your opinion on this light...ballast is internal too!...not replacing the LEDs...lol, but starting another room....wanna give those SNLxNH some good light  I am looking at the 400w with deluxe bulbs...tell me whatcha think

TEST LAUNCH-Operation Redwood Tree
Hey cool set-up....I like it. You know I found 400w of mh lighting a bit tough on my seedlings and having moved the 400 w into the growroom (where it ROCKS btw!.....just need to work out the electrical) and just bought a 250w mh w/internal ballast. I'll grab a pic in a few.
My seedlings honestly seem happier with a 250 and I can get it closer to them. Obviously it doesn't have as big a footprint as with a 400w so might be too small for your needs depending on how many seedlings you are going to be starting but I'm already seeing less heat and stress related issues with the 250w.
I'm not sure what to tell you about cooling Stealth.....when we had the 400w in a LARGE room the heat it left was minimal (approx 20 x25 ish)....but in the growroom(16 x 12 or something) I ended up hooking it to a 4" inline fan and DO notice a definite difference in the room cooling by perhaps 3-4 degrees with it running inline vs venting into room. I'm thinking that your new room will be smaller and may need some sort of good ventilation to assist.

Im trying to go for a one light setup...space is an issue, your right, and the measurements on that one are great, and its total 800w that run together instead of switching bulbs...full spectrum broo haha....i think...lol

oh....that is a swap setup....lol
the full spectrum i found is like 600 bucks for the 800w combo...ouch

If you have cable or satellite be sure to check out "The dog Whisperer" and "It's me or the Dog". The latter is a British? version of the first. Good, interesting shows my whole family can watch and enjoy.
Evidently it's all about the trainers' thoughts and attitudes. Just remain calm, think good thoughts, and say "Shhh!" to your dog if he/she does something undesirable. Just spend 5 minutes doing this initially, and 3 seconds each day afterward, and your dog will be trained. Right SnS? Works on TV so it must be true.
I do it a little differently. When they do bad stuff they get the "No, bad dog" in a firm tone. Sometimes they even get a spanking if it's soon enough after the offense, and if I think I'll be able to make them understand what the punishement is for. When they do good stuff they get the "Good girl!" in a tone of praise, along with lots of attention and petting, and maybe a treat. I try very hard to not lay a hand on my dogs, but sometimes when they are young the firm tone just isn't enough. A delicate blend of positive and negative reinforcement. Is this about right whiskeytango, or, oh forget it. I'm rambling, and in the wrong forum. Cheers everyone. The sun is shining today and the meds are now kicking in.
