When you die everything fades to black, then after a few seconds, the words "LEVEL 2" appear in big glowing red letters.
Man this topic is so widely debated and has been for so long only because we can't possibly know. It's still fun to talk about tho. well... I don't believe in nothing, because of a few cool proofs (not proof, mind you, but proofs, as in set up in the mathematical way) that were originally thought up by St. Augustine in his Suma Theologica.
Uncaused Cause:
-Because of the Law of Cause and Effect, every effect has a cause.
-We can follow this cause/effect chain as far back as we want.
-Why can't this chain go back forever?
-If that were true, there would have been an infinite amount of time before the point in time where we are right now.
-This is not possible because if it were true, we could never have arrived at this point, because of the nature of time.
-So there must be SOMETHING that doesn't have a cause, something supernatural, able to work outside the realm of scientific law.
Conservation of Matter/Energy
(this one is kinda flimsy with new advances in science and particle theory, but its still my favorite)
-According to the laws of conservation of matter and energy, matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed
-There is matter and energy all around us.
-Therefore, this matter/energy must have either been introduced by something able to work outside of this law, or it was always here.
-It cannot have always been here, because of the same infinity reasons as before.
-So it must have been placed here by something.
Complexity
I don't remember this one too well, but the gist is that everything is super complex and shows signs of intelligence, as opposed to random assembly. Even with natural selection and evolution (which I WHOLEHEARTEDLY believe in) it is mindboggling to imagine going from primal energy and genetic material to bacteria... and then from there the mutations to take that bacteria to animals and other lifeforms... well those mutations would be so damn random and incredibly extreme.
Anyway... I consider myself Catholic... so i believe in all the big stuff, but im pretty hypocritical if you ask me... I'm not a very good christian, but I dont really give a damn. in fact one of the main reasons I am is because it seems to be the best option of all the religions out there... and im not atheist or agnostic because of this:
Belief
When faced with this very question (does something happen when we die) this is a logical way to look at your options and their outcomes. It really simplifies the whole thing, but its still got a point :)
You have four things that could happen when you die.
1. There is nothing out there and you think there is something
Outcome: Well, it doesn't really matter... there's nothing, so you won't really care
2. There is nothing out there and you think there is nothing
Outcome: Also... doesn't matter for the same reasons
3. There is something out there and you think there is nothing
Outcome: Well youre kinda screwed according to religion (as long as you knew the religion option was there, but in this day and age... well you do)
4. There is something and you believe there is something
Outcome: YAY eternal happiness...
It's not foolproof... I mean look at how you can live your life if you aren't focused on religion...
Well, thats about the extent of stuff off the top of my head (blame catholic school)
I can't be too religious tho, i smoke, and thats a sin apparently hehe
you become fertlizer simple as that.
the world that existed becomes nothing.
and our offspring walk the face of this earth and so on....
There was a spirituality movement back in the 1800s sometime, I think, that talked about additional dimensions that are sometime hypothesized in scientific theories as the 'space' where heave and hell is located.
Imagine there was a two dimensional being inside of a square. Inside this square, the being is surrounded by four walls and it sees nowhere to go since up and down don't exist in two dimensions. Now, we live in three dimensions and could simply pick it up and place it outside of the square. To the being inside, it would seem as though 'God' came and saved him from the unbreakable square through the wall since he can't perceive up or down.
Now apply that to us. Perhaps, God lives on another dimension that we can't perceive as there. No matter what we do, we can't really go a direction which doesn't seem to exist to us without help.
Either way, physics and spirituality are fascinating as hell, and even more so after a bowl or two.
Exactly. I wish I could find it in myself to believe in something but I just have trouble imagining anything so big as God because of this simple logic: If God created the universe, who created God? It just means I just can't really pray to God and feel like someone gives a damn about my lame problems.Quote:

Anyway, regardless what you believe, everyone deserves some basic form of equality. Damn, like those assholes that picket gay soldiers funerals. What the hell is that?
By the way, this isn't directed at you lol. I just felt like ranting.

I hear ya. But thats why Hes God, He didn't have a creator. thats the whole basis of the uncaused cause argument.Quote:

I think its sad that most christians are misguided bigots, but the only thing I can do is stay informed and educated and try to do my best to live my life the way I think is best.
Holy crap... That Joe Rogan rant on DMT was ridiculous

Pretty amazing stuff really, but it'll be many more moons before we see it happening and making a differnce.
Well... What about ghost and spirits?... I have many ghost in my house, my old grandma(89 yrs) collects dead family stuff when they die right now there is about 9 or 10 different dead people stuff in the house, and at night they come out and walk around
"Sometimes" you see and hear them, most of the time you don't but you know that they are there.... I don't want to be a ghost although walking around scaring the living seems to look like fun

You are at total peace.
That's about it, other than you take no physical form.

But on the spirituality thing, you gotta seek that out for yourself, bud.
People telling you all their random beliefs is not going to help you find the truth. If you subscribe to a particular belief that you did not come to follow based on your own journey, your spirituality will be vicarious and hollow. If you find truth on your own, you will feel no doubt, nor will you feel threatened by another's belief.
hey, i know you posted this a while ago, but I was checking out the site and thought I would share my beliefs with you. After several studies and researching the bible this is what I believe the bible tells us about death. We go to sleep when we die and wake up when the Lord returns to take us home. If you are interested in more information on this please feel to e mail me.Quote:

Whoah, I've never thought about plant reincarnation / transmigration.
I'd much prefer animal.
I've always wanted to be re-incarnated into a turnip. Second choice, a carrot. I dont know why, but damn, that's my future!
This is a lengthy thread, so i don't know if my commentary will be unique or not.
Maximum comprehension of science and of the cosmos greatly diminishes apprehension about mortality. When you see the earth as insignificant as a grain of sand on an anthill, a human life seems unfathomably irrelevant.
Of course, even a scientifically-rooted mind is not impervious to the spectrum of emotion native to human existence. We have a mental advantage over animals, but often a seemingly disadvantageous emotional status. The complexities of human emotion can be crippling; it seems like it would be easier if we were more inclined to follow no more than our fight-or-flight instincts.
I for one have no expectations when I die. If I retain any form of consciousness after death, it would be a pleasant surprise. If I had nothing more than the memories I made during mortality, I would have a blissful eternity.
I've vaguely felt that all human consciousness is homogeneous, viz. that at one point all our thoughts and emotions and consciousness was one defined entity, and will at some point be restored to one great whole. Perhaps heightened consciousness is similar to raw matter; eons ago it was a condensed whole, gets dispersed during a prolonged temporal existence, and is ultimately re-condensed to a perfect, refined form.
It reminds me of the literal state of Israel. It was once a centralized group, then was scattered in a diaspora, and according to divinely revealed promises, will be gathered together whole, in a more excellent state because of refinement, persecution, and individual strength (no I don't mean when the U.N. tried to make a nation of Israel after WW2, I mean when the messiah restores them). K i could go off all day. I'm not actively religious, but i believe in much of what religion is based upon
Yo, the whole idea of this question is impossible for man to answer. Our brains are wired to comprehend a beginning and an end, but there is the possibility that existence begins, but doesn't end, and there is just the same possibility that it begins and ends. We can't comprehend it either way. Try to imagine living for eternity, then try to imagine non-being. The thought of both are impossible. So whatever ends up happening to us is ultimately a paradox of existence. Since we have defined things such as existence, we expect there to be opposites and such, but really we have created all of these concepts to justify actually being. It's really incredibly paradoxical.
Well my little brother knows....he killed himself on the 10th of this month.
I am so sad.....this will be a hard Christmas
I would like to believe in an afterlife, but I really don't know, and after finding his cold stiff body I am haveing trouble keeping my faith.
dylan-
are you being serious? if so, im sorry this has happened.
if you are being serious.... i have good news. you can find your brother. look in your mind first.
you should be able to see him if he made it.
lets all recall the anna nicole situation. when her son died, i could see him in my mind.
the point is.... you want to make it to the mind area. i suppose your brother can be found there just like any other individual, and i assume he is blue.
look in your mind. call to him. manifest things in your heart which would be familiar to both him and you.
youll find him.
may i ask..... was he serving in the military? this is common problem, suicide i mean, with military people.
Seriously, I have no reason to lie, my friends see stuff all the time, I got a little video but it's not worth playing( but its easy to disapprove) I try not to go looking for them any more once the door locked by itself when I was watching it(sober) and when my ruler jumped off my desk (smoked a blunt).... But they seem pretty alive to me I bet many people here have seen ghost, spirits and everything else that goes bump in the night... but most of us try not to pay attention to or make up lame excuses to things on other planes walking around usQuote:

We all know that when you take a either dmt or salvia you can trip hard enough to live the entire life of another individual. So what if when you die you just wake up from another trip.
when you die, a thousand horny teenage virgins are waiting for you in heaven as well as $1,000 in cash and a sony PSP. That is provided you have spent your life glorifing the Gods of capitalism and consumerism. So, 5 times a day, you must get in your toyota camry and pay homage to the Gods Wal-Mart, J.C. Penny's, Kroger or Vehix.com.
you lose awareness
Man can you guys think, maybe your in your after life right now, maybe YOU could have been someone famous back then that have passed, there is no way of knowing, but maybe you have already lived another life, and cant remember anything about it, since you were reincarnated into a new human being
I imagin it is a bit like before you were born- you were dead then, yes? Just dispersed particals and energy... floating here or there in the breeze or further down the food chain?
The Human Brain and Body may be an organic machine, but little is known about what exactly the Mind is and hardly anything is known about Consciousness( your direct state of awareness) or what exactly it is, humans do however know of a few practices and techniques that can be used to show some of the potential of the mind, these practices are Lucid Dreaming and Astral Projection and they show that Consciousness is very 'flexible' and could in fact exist without the body, near death experiences and experiences with substances such as DMT also suggest this...so suggesting things such as when life on this planet 'dies' theres nothing is just as ignorant and extreme as thinking life will suffer for all eternity if they do not follow the certain rules of a specific documentation... the fact is no one really knows, we only know what we can observe and analyze what nature has provided us with and considering we know absolutely nothing about the grand scheme of what this universe or universes hold it would be very primitive and moronic to come to a conclusion about what happens after we 'die' on this planet, maybe we should strive to be more curious on this matter and start considering what exactly Consciousness is.
you decompose and go back to nature from whence you came. thats what I hope
I hear you crap your pants when you die.
Death is a question of the nature of linear time. How important is before-birth, compared to after-death.
Had a past life, how-about one before that... and how far do they go. The heaven concept allays these concerns since it's cut and dried. Oblivion to existence to Heaven.
There was a great Zen story I read once that went something like this.
A Zen Master is asked by his student, "Zen Master, what happens when we die?" The Zen Master replies, "I have no idea."
Surprised, the student asks, "But aren't you a Zen Master." To which the Master replies, "Yes, I am a Zen Master, but I'm not a dead Zen Master."
Still, I swear I do have past life memories of living as a small furry animal.
I've heard that we take on another form for another place in the universe.
