It wasn't until AFTER he left that things started to go wrong, but the original colony wanted to live in peace and only wanted a narrow piece of swampland, which ended up bein a bad choice to begin with!Quote:

I'll agree here. That's what I'M doin'!Quote:

What "anti-American" sentiments? I have nothing against Americans. I am no more anti-American than I am anti-Vietnamese, anti-Colombian, anti-Portuguese or anti-Ethiopian. I just hope someday we can get rid of these silly "nations" and come together as a single species.Quote:

I certainly do. There are some people who simply don't deserve to live, and that includes murderous tyrants.Quote:

Why are you proud to live in this country? Would you be ashamed to live in another country? Or is your choice entirely arbitrary, in that you are only proud to live here because you happen to live here?Quote:
A nation which I'm very proud to live in, stupid as you may feel that sentiment is.
I only take pride in things that I have actually achieved through my own efforts. I don't believe in white pride, or American pride, or heterosexual pride, or male pride, or right-handedness pride, or attached-earlobe pride. I had nothing to do with the conditions of my birth, or the territorial division of land into different nation-states, or the formation of the political system that rules over me, so I find it absurd to be proud of my nation. I am only American because the natives who originally lived here could not defend themselves against an invasion of British settlers, and I happen to live a couple miles south of a line, drawn up by colonial rulers several centuries ago, that used to divide some settlers who decided to found an independent republic in the 1770s from some other settlers who wanted to remain a British colony for another 90 years. Honestly, why should that matter to me?

Your "I'm AA and I don't care what the nieghbors think" attitude is a facade, and this thread proves it. What was the "poll" question again ?
America isn't perfect, but we certainly have many thing to be proud of, many things we have done right. We always try to do the right thing, we aren't always successful, but we try. If you can't bring yourself to appreciate a society because that society's Government lacks perfection thats OK because this is America. the envy of the world.
BTW when you find a society that has prefect ( I will even settle for better) Government let me know, I won't tell you to move there, I will.
I'll bet you a nickel I die of old age right here.:)
CURIOSITY !!
Simple really , the point is : how is disagreeing with someone a reason to call them anti anything ? Surely the very statement anti american insinuates that the person hates all things American which is why my very first question was for something that nobody who uses the label anti american has been able to supply up till now.
WHAT IS ANTI AMERICAN ??
Can anyone answer ?
Those who use it most seem the least forthcoming with a definition, is it based purely on political differences or would disliking MacDonalds make me AA* ?
Can anyone clarify the situation?
have you noticed that those who call others anti-american are usually the ones who have no idea what our country is supposed to be...we have a pretty good outline for a government in the constitution (it's as close to anarchy as you'd want to get without things going to hell, and really far away from dictatorship) and we're so far away from the constitution right now...we're drifting towards northcom/homeland security military dictatorship.
but if you're against the military dictatorship, then you hate america. if you don't ask questions and accept what you're told, then you love it.

We are the only animal that kills for sport, greed, lust, retribution, moral conviction, etc. After a while,I just can't "feel" much except dismay and resignation that this is what we do to each other. We all have our defense mechanisms to keep our sanity.
On the illegal alien issue: I am just speaking from experience here and fully understand the reasons why so many are totally against it,but as a chef and 15 years in this industry,I have worked with quite a few illegals and it boils down to simple humanity. When you hear their stories and what they went through in their own lands and what they did to get here,it really changes your perspective.
Perfect example being a dishwasher or prep person. Now,in a corporate setting, everyone is legal, but the privately-owned places are another entirely. In over a decade, the Mexicans,Guatemalans,Peruvians, etc I have known worked harder than any American doing the same job.The work ethic they have is amazing.
They never complained [like Americans do..lol!],were willing to learn anything you wanted to teach them, never were late, never called in sick and were always very nice and respectful to all fellow employees..they busted ass right along with the rest of the crew 12 to 15 hours a day,6 to 7 days a week.
I don't care if it's a mom and pop place or The Ritz-Carlton,Americans will complain about the work, call in for stupid reasons, have an attitude about doing some job [this is not a glamorous profession;it's HARD WORK] because they feel it's beneath them, took excessive smoke breaks or were always on their damn cell phones.I have had to confiscate many a phone at the start of a shift because people seem to think that it's ok to be paid to socialize.
As a female in a male-dominated industry,I have a tremendous work ethic and expect co-workers and employees to follow suit.I have just experienced more problems with fellow Americans than the amigos who were doing the same job for the same rate of pay....that's all!:)
So by disagreeing with certain aspects of Americas ideaology and it's goverment and the mindset of certain individuals I am anti - American.Quote:

Surely I can't be pro and anti at the same time?
Would my admiration for Neil Armstrong or Buzz Aldrin be pro or anti ?
How about my love of 50's hotrods or B movies (both American)??
How about Edison ? Genius IMO
See for your definition to work it has to be black or white but that simply isn't the case is it ?
Now tell me again about anti - American without the childish attempts to appear smart.
'Anti-American' was used by McCarthy during the Red Scare to justify a witch hunt and the term gives me the weebie-jeebies. You also see it used by sleezy politicians and TV preachers trying to wrap themselves in the flag for unwholesome purposes. The whole dewy-eyed 'I'm a patriot!' song and dance always seems to have hateful motives.
If we're getting badmouthed abroad we certainly deserve it at this point, but I still feel a little prickly when someone is dis'n my home who isn't from here. I suppose it's like my cajun cousins--they can call themselves coonasses but you better not do it.....lol
