i go every thursday with a group of 2-5 people. i started diving/freegan lifestyle in high school and I have been 'caught' twice. dumpster diving is legal as long as there are no locks or 'no trespassing' signs around the dumpsters. first time i was caught, i was peering into a bin behind a bread store where I had usually been insanely successful and an employee walked out and asked me to leave. the second time was the same, but behing a thrift store with a few other people. if i am asked to leave, I do.

You seem like a wonderful person :) If there was more people like you the world would for ure be a better place, and I'm not just basing that statement from this one post, or thread, I'm basing it off all the posts of your you have wrote :D keep up the good work Biz

i like to say "undefine your boundaries". isn't labeling/dividing the very thing that's causing devision and strife in our world? anyone, i'm done; many happy dives to ya.
good question. i label myself cause like you said, i am compelled to. i am many many many more things than 'freegan'. being 'freegan' is just a summation of a lifestyle choice and behavior. like being a jehova's witness. and also because otherwise i'd be called a bum.

last thing: i think buying used stuff, or finding it, or giving it away (folks, FREECYCLE kicks assssssssssssss!!!!) is great, and also a mindset that is understanding of the wonderful planet we abide in
this throw-away culture is really terrible. things not built to last anymore. people don't get things fixed, sometimes not even cleaned; just throw away and get a new one; it can't go on; our planet is too beautiful and wondrous for us to let ourselves fuck it up

great answer
i feel we could chill, man; good vibes you give off.
me, for example; i might call myself a "christian" because i believe the bible. but no one's conception of what that word means (nor my own) can encapsulate me

thanks, you flatter me. but this is why i do these kinds of things, to make the world a better place. people should try it some time. i'm making up for those who sit idly by, wasting wasting wasting

Yep it makes me sick in this day and age when we need to recylce, reuse, and reduce the most. All we seem to be doing is making inferior products, that are more exspensive to fix then just throw out and buy a new one. We need better qaulity products on the market! Not the junk that is sold now a days!

I must confess I am one of those people who waste, I don't even recycle too much, But I'm starting to think I need to change that in a major way!

well i'm only nineteen year old girl. i'm still developing my identity and these labels give me a foundation. being yourself is hard when you havent exactly figured yourself out yet. labels are bittersweet

gotta say that ipod story is pretty darn hard to believe; circuit city sells old stock on ebay, not best buy? that's the score (or the tall tale) of a lifetime
as for me: lots of my furniture (heck almost all of it) is used, much of it found by or in dumpsters,
on another level it kills me when folks go to target and buy some pressboard ikea-ripoff crap furniture, when they could go on craigslist and get a high quality solid wood piece for half the price. tomorrow i'm picking up a "kiosk" for $20 from a lady, solid wood, it will be my veg cab

i think that would work if everyone was giving, charitable, and communal. heck, everywhere in the world is a blur between communism and capitalism. understand that when i say "communism" i mean the ideal, theoretical idea of having everything in common, everyone helping each other. "communism" as it has been used by countries such as russia and china, is just a farce, an excuse for oppression; a critical distinction
i've gotta say though, as much as i'd love to abandon capitalism (and hope to do so to some extent, living with friends and fam. in a communal, semi-agricultural fashion), i think that capitalism is the most feasible way for folks to have a high standard of living (and by that i mean good food, water, health care, and some comfort, not shitloads of fucking hummers) in this world of imperfect folk.
still, i admire where you're coming from
-
first dumpster dive this month
yeah socialism and capitalism are unfortunately one of those ideals that are genious yet have very little hope in aplication to our sociey nowadays. capitalism has its benefits but at the same time has severe drawbacks. i'd just like to see people learn from the mistakes of capitalism and take from the ideals of communism and socialism to create a more responsible economy and way of living. it is possible. abandoning capitalism NOW would indeed be catastrophic, but that doesn't mean we can't change how we run. and this is why (among other things) I dumpster dive. why i would love to live in a socialist utopia, i dont see it in my immediate future but I DO see folks re-thinking our economy and looking into other alternatives, gradually making small changes.

are you privileged? cuz i find this sort of thinking despicable; i am a privileged white kid from a safe, clean, middle class community. i've never wanted for anything. but i understand that i'm lucky, and i'm grateful, and i try to have some compassion for all the folk that didn't have all the shit that i did and still do. don't be so quick to judge. you don't know someone's situation. you might have talked with that "redneck" and found them to be a very soulful person, dealing with hard times.

i gave up around page 4 when it gets angered
anyway, good luck; it's easy for me to be cynical. to think that the world can't change. that's the kind of thinking that traps us, to think we can't make a difference. it's the kind of thinking that has created an overpowered government, and a pliable, controllable base of consumers.
it never ceases to amaze me how we can bicker about whether someone else is doing the best possible thing or not, when we do nothing. trying to help other people, that's admirable no matter what.
a little love goes a long ways. it spreads, but unfortunately so does hate. we define our world.

well well.....
though i think it is great you are who you are biz, i find it a bit nasty if i may say to label others who dont think and do what you do..several times, you have said people who dont do this, are sitting idly by, and i believe you referred to us as useless as well....
i do not go into dumpsters, nor would i ever..but i do recycle..i do not waste...i do not take bags from the grocery store..i do donate to charities...i do my share...i do shop at second hand stores..i try to not support many of the big corporations and try my best to support mom and pop stores..so to say we sit idly by is almost rude...and i almost found it offensive...
you are just as guilty as the people who do support capitalism and such when you label others who arent as "good" as you, and demean them...i am sorry...
you go ahead and keep doing what you are doing....it is fabulous..but try to stop judging others who dont share your same beliefs, and if you cant, at least use some tact about it...
-

oh no! its back!
and i apologize for offending anyone, I'm steadfast in by beliefs but i never called anyone useless for not dumpster diving, i admitted that you don't have to do it. but i am really disappointed by folks that sit around and complain but do nothing about it, there are so many opportunities for action... can we please lay this thread to rest? i am really really tired of arguing. once again, if I offended you, I'm sorry. and if you are offended, please get up and do something

I AGREE : ) BUT there are exceptions like the ham, or take and bake pizza, my little bro used to call the take and bake pizza place like 20min before they closed and place an order, then he would wait untill they closed and because he never came to but it they just toss it in the trash, all wrapped up and everything
so fresh that the dough hadnt even rizen

my dad is proud of my dumpster finds : ) i showed him about the lottery ticket thing and between us we have found probably 3 or 4 grand in winning tickets that people threw away over the last 10 years or so
and auto parts and tools : ) yeah dont even get me started on all the good parts and tools i have found

THERE ARE QUITE A FEW THAT SAY NOT TO WASTE, finding something that your fellow man is about to "waste" and making good use out of it for youself can only be a good thing

well for starters it saves space in our landfills but it also helps the economy, anything that can be pulled out of a trash can and sold has value to just let it be trashed destroys a bit of value and value=wealth

some places have passed local laws against it but its still legal most places, the reason it is is bacause the COPS want it that way.
once they make it against the law THEY NEED A WARRANT TO SEARCH YOUR TRASHCAN, BUT AS LONG AS DUMPSTER DIVING IS LEGAL THEY CAN LOOK IN YOUR CAN TO SEE WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN SMOKING AND I CAN LOOK IN YOUR CAN FOR STUF I CAN USE OR SELL : )
im also an avid metal detector/treasure hunter/ gold prospector i just bought a whites mxt ($800) and i plan to find more with it then i spent on it
i have about another $500 on prospecting stuff and i have only found about $100 worth of gold so far but thats just because i need to get out and do it more ITS HARD WORK
so is dumpster diving
ITS EASY TO DRIVE BY A PERSON IN A DUMPSTER AND CALL THEM LAZY

It's cool that you "fight" for something you believe if you're a Freegan. Actually doing something active to make efforts of change.
On the whole imo it will never work, purely because the large majority of the population are not broad enough minded to see why it would do good and wouldn't consider being vegan.
Personally I wouldn't, although I think it's admirable to be a hardcore Freegan.

Damn, the first post sounds like something straight from Abbie Hoffman's "Steal This Book." Google it - most of the things in it are outdated, but it is funny to read what was happening in the 60's and 70's - those people (including me) we you younger folks FOREFATHERS, or was it foreskins, or something like that....
Damned Salvia....
