It's highly doubtful he just "unloaded" his hostility at some random player passing by. The fact is that no one here really knows what went on, and I have a feeling that this was building up long before it happened. The way he just stopped running and turned around and unleashed that nasty attack leads me to believe he was provoked. His actions were immature, yes, and he's going to undergo hella criticism for years, but that's the way it goes. It was the heat of the moment, and he fucked up. Yes.

Saying that Zidane is not a loyal player or even a world-class player is just funny. Anyone that has followed him and his career over the years knows well enough to look past ONE instance where he lost his head and instead remember everything else he did for his country and the world of football. He will be missed.

You make some vaild statements, but all in all, I just see someone blinded by their passion. It's cool that you're Italian, but at least acknowledge the fact that the Italians are not innocent of low-blows and dirty tactics.

That elbow from De Rossi was certainly an example of dirty tactics, and you can't just set him aside from the rest of the players. They're a team. Win as a team, lose as a team. Materazzi is certainly guilty of setting off Zidane, so hats off to that. I just wish he would try and set an example for the world that racism should not be tolerated in football. That's my biggest problem with what he said. When FIFA as a whole is trying to erase racism, it's hard to get anywhere when one of the members of a championship team finds nothing wrong with spouting off stupid, ignorant shit like that.

As for the diving, that is something I know a lot of people want to see gone, but sadly, every team is guilty of that. You can't exclude anyone, including your precious Italians. But it makes sense if you think about it. A player feels someone behind them or even the slightest knick on the leg, they can go down and try and get better postion. It's been a part of football forever, man.

That penalty was indeed a foul, that's not in question, but I could see it going either way b/c it wasn't exactly a hard foul. That was the ref's call, so you can't use that as part of an argument.

And as I said in some other thread, Zidane in NO WAY completely tarnished his reputation over the years. Anyone with enough sense knows better than to sum up a career like his into one freak instance. He is a legend and will still be that, with or without that card. He carried the French the whole tournament, with a pride that was so contagious that I myself caught it from the States. It's a shame he didn't go out on top, but what are you gonna do. He at least got the golden ball, which he deserved along with a handful of others. It's all good though, I'm not that mad or anything. The game was awesome, and things happened the way they happened.
