If you had spent all of the time (or even half) and effort you've spent on drugs and booze on school, wouldn't you be better off?
You're right that sometimes probation doesn't work, that's why there are penalties for violation of probation. If you blow your "second chance" that's on you...man. Well, what are you going to do? It's your choice and you have nobody to blame for the outcome but you. That's what personal responsibility is all about.
