hey i just started reading this thread just now and i noticed some areas that you could be corrected. im not trying to be a jerk, its just to help out some other people. Now i've been cooking about 3-5 batches of edibles a week for about 3 months, and i have cooked with very expensive bud ($300 per ounce) and very cheap bud ($30 per ounce). i didn't like the smoking once i started caughing up black stuff and its much harder to get caught with brownies in your fridge rather than 1 ounce or more of bud.
the first thing is that THC is an oil. same as butter. which means they stick together. when you filter it through a cheesecloth use alot. you will end up only getting butter + thc + a little bit of fluids from the bud itself. all the other junk stays in there and you can only tell the taste of a bud very slightly in butter, not even worth it in my opinion. you can use 2 or 3 ounces of cheap ($30) weed rather than one expensive ounce and they will taste better, they will be much more potent and will cost less. but i still grind up the bud in a grinder because it gives more surface area and is easier to extract the thc.
Your cooking and heating methods are awesome. crock pots are the best things to use by far. but the only thing that i would change is instead of keeping the crock pot on for 4-5 hours keep it on for 24! just make sure to keep the cover on and make sure that it does not boil... or come close... or start to burn. lol. yea i know 24 hours is a long time but usually u can hook it up in your bathroom and close the door and it will stink just as bad as if someone smoked in there.
And one last thing that i would correct you on is the amount of hash/keif to bud ratio. the strongest thc content i have heard of in weed is about 30% (i believe the average is around 15% or so). so even if you were to extract 100% of the thc in the bud (which is practically impossible) 3 grams of the most potent bud will only equal 1 gram of hash or keif because that is 100% THC (3:1 ratio). it might not taste like marijuana as much but it will definetly be just as potent. oh and the last thing i would say is it really doesn't matter how you cool your butter, you've already trapped the thc in the butter so it isn't going anywhere i usually just keep it out in the open and let it cool or place it in my fridge till its cool.
i know i haven't been on this forum for long but i have been making cannabutter for a while now. Just try it and you'll see.
oh and one last thing. during the 24 hrs let the butter and weed cool completely a couple of times.
Hi MVP
Wow! I take a little holiday, come back and find all kinds of great stuff posted up.
Fantastic job on the tutorial and pictures - should be given a sticky. Excellent work and very thorough.
Hope you don't mind me 'chipping in' to add a couple of extras.
The reason for clarifying the butter (other than to help stabilise the temp) is it lasts longer. It's the milk/cream and other impurities that make it turn rancid. Always worth doing and doesn't take more than quarter of an hour.Quote:

So, allowing a 2:1 ratio is perfectly fine. The only exceptions would be for a highly refined 'bubble' hash, or a well made hash oil.Quote:

No really you always post some of the most informative information, add lots of pics, and treat all who comment with absoloute respect. Ive been struggling with my PH, I cant figure out what makes it plunge, why my nutes are so weak or if its my meter not reading right.
Ill try this, if I ever grow enough:jointsmile:
Watch out Emeril.........
I agree....Flame is simply a cornucopia of cooking info.
:P now i know why my Bud-Butter came out like shit. Thx for this awsome in depth Recipe bro!
When I was visiting some buddies in Colorado last summer, we used cannabutter on toast every morning for breakfast, because one of the roommates hated the smell of herb. Great alternative to a wake-n-bake.
I just made some killer oatmeal cookies w/ dried cranberries. They are soooooooo tasty! I will post pics later, I am gonna go watch a movie :stoned:
Cranberry Oatmeal Ganja Cookies - Makes 3 Dozen :food10:
Overview:
To make it easy to understand, I am going to separate the ingredients into WET and DRY since the recipe calls for mixing up the WET in one bowl, then mixing up the DRY in another bowl. After each has mixed together well, gradually add the DRY mix into the WET ingredients, folding them together with a spatula or wooden spoon. DO NOT USE A POWER MIXER.
Ingredients:
MIX THESE TOGETHER IN THE "WET" BOWL
- 3 Tablespoons Cannabutter
- 3 Tablespoons Salted Butter
- 1 Cup firmly packed Brown Sugar
- 1/2 Cup Granulated Sugar
- 1 Egg
- 1/4 Cup Water
- 1 Teaspoon Vanilla
MIX THESE TOGETHER IN THE "DRY" BOWL
- 3 Cups Quaker Oatmeal
- 1 Cup All-Purpose Flour
- 1 Teaspoon Salt
- 1/2 Teaspoon Baking Soda
OTHER
- 1 Cup Dried Cranberries (added at the very end)
Preheat oven to 350 F. Combine all WET ingredients into a bowl and beat then together to a smooth texture. Combine all DRY ingredients into a separate bowl and mix together, then gradually stir DRY ingredients into the WET ingredients and mix well until consistent texture. Now that dough is mixed, add 1 Cup Dried Cranberries and mix into cookie dough.
Grease up a cookie sheet and use 2 separate tablespoons to drop rounded dough blobs (about the size of a half-dollar) on cookie sheet. I get get a dozen cookies per sheet arranged in 3 rows of 4 blobs. Bake at 350 F for 12-15 minutes (mine were perfect at 13-1/2 min). Remove from oven and let them sit on the cookie sheet and cool for 5 minutes.
I use 2 separate cookie sheets and bake them one batch at a time. When the first sheet came out I put the second batch in the oven immediately. While the first batch was cooling for 5 minutes, I stirred the dough a few times. I then lift the cookies off the sheet and place them on a wire cooling rack. I then use the 2 separate tablespoons to drop 12 more blobs of dough on the cookie sheet and am ready to repeat the process.
This recipe makes 3 dozen cookies. In my particular batch of Cannabutter 3 Tablespoons = 1/8 oz of herb, so each cookie has approximately 1/10 of a gram of cannabis. For me and the GF it means that 2-3 cookies is a nice start, and maybe more if we feel so inclined... Enjoy!

P.S. This is the first time I have made these, so next batch I am going to try to cook at a lower temperature and longer duration to see if potency is greater. They turned out perfect - moist and tasty. Now that I have a baseline, experiments start next batch...
