Schoolgirls suspended for saying "vagina" during a reading of the Vagina Monologues
I got in trouble because in history class I was saying how the Negroes were sent to fight the Ingins because Whitey didn't want to die. A girl in my class didn't like the word Negro, so I asked her if I could use black, she said african american would work, I said no it wouldn't, because we kidnapped them, brought them over to America, and made them farm and fight for us... If they were a slave, I refered to them as Africans. I am not racist, but that is how I view it.
If you were brought to Argentina to do slave labor, would you consider yourself American-Argentinan? I know I wouldn't!

I see where your coming from hun. I think the name african american should only apply to those who were born into the US. Like you said, if I was a slave i would want to keep my heritage. But I dont think its about that. i just think its a respect thing.

I had a sex-ed in junior high, then in highschool it was mixed into my health class, although to be perfecilly honest my health teacher was a sexist bitch who plamed all problems in the world on men, more specificaly drugs and STD's. She would constantly say how in her mind women were smarter then men "by ten-fold"(her actual words) even though almost all the girls failed the test over the female reproductive system. On that test we made fun of one guy because he couldn't find the cliteris ^.^

I hate to be the stick in the mud...but did any of you read the article??? It wasn't the word that got them in trouble it was the fact they promised not to say it and then did. They were told this was a public forum and people of all ages may be there including children. If they had a problem with that then they could of got the ACLU to lawyer-up with them and sue the school.....
What is this country coming to when children are taught to break their word....
I agree the word vagina is quite accepted word among adults, but who made these girls the one to decide that for everyone in attendence....
//END RANT//
With that being said...I'm married with kids, can anyone remind me what a vagina is???

^^I don't think they should have ever been made to promise not to say "vagina" in the first place! Vagina is an anatomically correct term, and I see absolutely no problem with it being used among children. They were doing the VAGINA Monologues!!! It's a celebration of vaginas (or cunts, as Betty Dodson-viva la vulva- would say)...I would like to know how something can be celebrated, and censored at the same time. Disgusting.
(ps: nothing personal midlife, censorship especially when it comes to sex in the US is something i am very passionate about)

I agree with dutch, the act of making them promise to not say vagina in itself was an act of cencorship. America is too prudish when it comes to these things, rather admiting they even fuck for fun or masturbate, most americans would rather cover it up. Also, so what if a child heard the word vagina, they were taken to the VAGINA Monologues for fucks sake! These girls weren't truly braking a promise as much so protecting their personal morales

Nothing personal taken.
However, Is it not a bit hypocritical to be a part of these boards, where they have rules that you agree to abide by because it is there place and that is what they ask of you? If you break the rules here you can be punished, just as these girls broke the rules and got punished.
I agree the word vagina should not have that much stigma attached, but with freedom of speech comes responsability....I don't think the word was the issue it was there word that was the issue.
This instance has nothing to do with censorship and everything to do with politeness (or lack there of). I am sure the word vagina was mentioned in discussions with the principal, and they were not punished for the mere use of the word, but were asked to not used it in a school sponsored event were the general public would attended, just as we at canna.com are asked to not talk about certain things and have a general civility toward each other, or we will be suspended.
Now if these girls wanted to do a production of the vagina monologues, got some local theater company to give them time on a stage and the local church ladies rallied and got them shut down, that would be censorship.

You've got to ask "why were these girls not allowed to say the word vagina?". There's my point- there is NO GOOD REASON to make them omit that word. Absolutely none. If canna.com forced me to withhold intelligent, scientifically-correct vocabulary, especially sex-related, I would freak out and probably quit the boards. I can see why they censor certain things; in Canada we have freedom of speech but hate speech is illegal. The girls never should have been forced to omit the word vagina in the first place.
The US needs to lighten up when it comes to sex... do you guys know how many states are trying to make EVERYTHING sexual illegal? New York is one example. All the Southern States too. No strip clubs, no adult bookstores, nada. By censoring the word vagina, you really have to ask yourself what is next to come.
