Spray painting perlite will do a couple things:
-Make it less porous and change its physical properties
-Introduce a potential source of toxins into your system. If you don't take paints/solvents seriously, google 'hydrohut syndrome'... that wasn't even in CONTACT with actual plants...
Vermiculite is brown and less visible as a waste product. It's not as good as raw perlite, but hella better than painted perlite.
I would have to agree with Stinky, wouldn't painting the perlite defeat it's purpose...
D:S5:
For the record, that was a side conversation, I have no intentions of painting perlite...lol

I thought they were removing vermeculite from the market because of health/asbestos issues. Anyone heard anything along that line about perlite as well?
I knew that Whiskey, I should have directed it to I think vegii was the one lookin to camo his perlite. sorry for the confusion, if any...
So were you guys serious, I recall a mention in some thread about the the stealth crew considering a future hydro grow... A hydro/led/lst... I'd subscribe to that thread in 2 tenths of a heartbeat...
Keep being good w/ the ladies
D:S5:
Haven't heard of anything with the vermiculite or perlite, but a while back the owner of one of the hydro stores in town told me that she talked to a sales rep and they told her that higromite had some asbestos in it... Don't have any proof to back that up, I have looked online to see if I can find any info but have had no luck
later D:S5:
Yes, yes...between WHs gargantuans, and Stinks suggestions/success has gotten me to CONSIDER getting wet...
I know, I know, I give dro guys shit alot...but I am learning more and more about it. And I can still keep my medicine organic, just shorten flower times and clean up a lot less.
Keep your eyes peeled D4.....:greenthumb:

In general, you should ALWAYS wear a dust mask when mixing media, no matter what it is, and also keep a spray bottle handy to mist it and keep the dust down. Asbestos is dangerous when it becomes airborne; keep your medium damp and your face covered and you are pretty safe.
I got the worst double sinus infection of my life from mixing bat guano and mycostim without a mask once... 6 weeks later, I had learned my lesson. :(
SnS,
I'd love to see you give hydro a try. I know you wouldn't be disappointed. My advice would be to just do something small and simple at first to check stuff out and get the hang of it.
Stinky,
Most people don't realize how dangerous guano is. Since there are so many safe alternatives I don't even consider using it due to the health risks. Anyone handling it should have a full hood respirator. Don't look at it, and don't breath while near it. Research this shit if you don't believe me.
veggi,
I know my perlite changes color after a few feedings, it gets brown. Maybe a nute soak?
