I do fabrication pretty regularly with my line of work. Building the filter isnt really a problem but I am curious as to what fans you guys are using that dont make all kinds of racket.
Anyone have suggestions on the real "silent" fans????
I just made this scrubber as of 9/03/07
Made mine to be an 8 inch outside diameter, and a 6 inch on the inside one.
Had two troubles with it, 1) getting the queen size hoes over the 6 inch chicken wire was tough, I was looking at the 8 inch one thinking bloody mercy. Then it came to me I just out the mid section of the hose and fit like a glove over the chicken wire. 2) Still trying to figure out sealing off the open end so the crystals don't come out and into my blower, no answer for this yet, I just hung it and some crystals came out but for the most part its all settled.
I did almost use up all of the 8 pound bag of fresh step kitty litter (the ones with the blues crystals, came out to be about 13 dollars) The thing is massive and weighs damn near 15 pounds. Get out your bungy cords.
Took me about an hour from start to finish, parts cost around 70 dollars (I did make a larger version), checked the outlet air and smells like fresh flowers. The fan I am using is a Blower Fan from the tool store that starts with an M. (Dunno if I can say the name)
All in all it was worth the money, time and energy to assemble this beast, props to the original poster for this rad idea.
Booya
Nope, it'll be just fine. I had the same setup for a while.Quote:

I know this might seem stupid and redundant, but after reading all the posts i still don't understand...
how is the fan connected to the filter???
from one of the ends? i thought one side had a cap and the other side was just the reducer...
from the middle? doesn't seem to make sense...
i think i am just missing something trivial of how u connect the final product to the ventilation system...
i thought the same thing when i read it , how does it work? this seems like a stand alone model. you could put another reducer on the other end though to make it an inline scrubber, like the one on the other side. i havnt built one yet, but i too would like to know of a decent, silent, fan that can be bought at a normal home improvement store. fyi this thread is how i found cann . com. when i was looking into a scrubber a long time ago. glad i stayed. that is a chunk of change to put out with the fan and a scrubber if you bought them premaid at a store.
Heres my 2 cents.
I've made 2 scrubbers in the last few months. one 4" & one 6" using depot line fans. I used simple fencing wire (rabbit wire) along with some weed blocker material (used in landscaping, they sell large & small amounts) for the screen sections. For the inner cap, just duct tape it over, and the outer cap use a .89c 8"-10" flower pot base. Then the cost is really just the fan and the charcoal.
Whether you are pulling the stinky air through the scrubber and then out or pushing it through and then out, the result is the same, clean stink free air. Think about it, the stinky air has to pass into the fan ducts' airflow one way or the other....
A little side note is that the carbon for a larger unit will run about $40-50 depending on the store. You'll need roughly 10 pounds for the larger unit. (4-5 28oz bottles-Petco, $9.99)

Hey, great how-to post here,
I'm planning on making one of these in a little bit but I have a few questions.
Where the hell can I get the activated carbon?
and
Would a carbon filter be any use for growing in a walk-in closet?
Would I just put the carbon filter in front of my fan?
Cheers! :)

I'm very limited on height, so I was thinking of making a shorter filter, but with a larger diameter. I would probably have two fans blowing into it, but I'm not exactly sure yet. To fasten it to my box, I was thinking about just getting....you know, those u-shaped things with the pointy ends. The last thing I was thinking about was using some of these instead of pantyhose. (I have a bunch lying around.) Do you think they'll be breathable enough? I can't say I've ever tried to move air through pantyhose, so I really don't have anything to compare it to.
Oh, and while I'm thinking about it, I've looked at some fans and some say on the package the amount of decibels they put out. Some do seem a bit loud, but I was wondering, how much does being inside a wooden box lower the noise level?
Thanks
dude that is kick ass so far looks as good as store baught and sounds like it works good . thank god for making people like you i thaught i could come up with some home made stuff but that is just bad ass good lick and peace out..
you'd be much better off replacing the carbon with silica gel, or maybe mixing the two. Its hard to get hold of through.
can anyone further explain how to put a lip inside to seal the thing? i dont understand what you mean by duct tape it over
thanks
for a carbon filter like this one...do i want to push the air or pull it?
push the air thru the filter :rastasmoke:
Pull it through.

also, new issue for me.
i went to the hardware store to get everything for this filter.
i was going to use a 4" inline fan for it.
i shortly realized that inline fans are just rough wired, no plugs or anything.
is there anyway i could still use? i dont know how to wire it!!
help please!
anyone know some wiring 101??

You should have no problem...
Good luck,

thanks man. i saw your thread a while ago(i posted right under you) but forgot to look 4 it.
what did you ground it to?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, as I admit I'm not much of an electrician...but I'm careful...
Hope it works for you, as its a simple and cheap efficient unit..

cool. thanks again.
ill finally be able to put my real air purifier back in my room, where it is much needed due to some reptilian tennants
Would this filter work for pot smoke?
yes max, these will work for ANY smell.
treetops- i got the fan wired...i didnt even think about it, but the 3 pronged "outdoor" power cords have a ground wire as well.
so theres that
how many CFM's are you guys using with yours?
i have a 4 inch 80 cfm and it seems kinda weak.
i know you dont want the air going over the carbon too fast...but...idk
hanayama,
Good to hear that...I thought mine was kinda weak as well...but I hooked it up to my 150hps hood and it is keeping my cab/closet in much lower temps than before..plants are liking it very much....see how it works for you...in time maybe you can replace it if you arent happy with how it does the job, but you will have the knowledge you tried and were not successful....
Experiment, experiment, experiment....till you find what works for you best...
Peace
Treetops
i JUST finished putting it together.
i took my real one out of there...im going to let it get a little stinky in there and then put it in there...gotta test it.
and yea experimenting is one of the best parts of this whole deal.
i thought of something after i was done with making it...screen from screen porches would probably work really well. i think the holes would be small enough to block the carbon...next time around maybe
hanayama,
Got any pics? Would like to see how you made out.. I used the carbon material and wrapped mine...carbon granuals to me are way too messy and for all the trouble one has to go through to accomplish the same thing, I think its a no brainer to use the them...my :twocents:..my inline fan is a 80cfm..works well, never any smell from my cab...
Peace,
Treetops

long overdue update -
filter is the last post on the page
so the carbon filter material works well too?
i may try that next time... you could make a couple small ones REAL easy with that stuff
good things
hands down the rubbermaid is awsome... iam going to make it for sure... about how much plants can i grow in the rubbermaid iam only trying to grow 3-4...
Im pretty sure im right, but i just want to be sure :P
In the attachment below, is this where you put the carbon filter?
IE: Do you seal off the grow chamber except for 2 places..
1 the fan exhusting air into the carbon filter getting rid of any smell
2 a hole at the bottom of the chamber to allow air to come in.
In the diagram, im showing that a fan is connected to a grow box, and on the other side of the fan is the carbon filter. Is this correct?
Cheers

Do you guys think if i ground up the carbon it would go throught the pantyhose?
I recently added a carbon filter to my rubbermaid box. I made it out of a "yellow jacket trap" that was supposed to be for catching wasps. Its pretty much a plastic cylinder with small holes in one end and a cone shaped divider inside, with an odd-shaped cap that screws on the other end.
A few extra holes, some tape, and a pound of activated carbon from the fish tank store was all i needed to make it happen. Heres a drawing:

When i found this thing in the garage it was like someone already knew...
It has worked out well so far, 30 something days into veg, i made it as soon as the green smell started being noticeable. We'll see how it does later on...
Big thanks to original poster/whoever thought about this to begin with, i didn't think about how to make mine until i saw this and thought about it for a while
