yes you can...it's in the user cp somewhere...i've seen other regular members invisible (mods can still see you tho).

found it on top of the "edit options" page of the user control panel...just click the box (you might have to leave then re-enter to set it tho)

If somebody is invisible, I'd think it would be good to dis-able them from being able to see if other people are online/offline. In addition, if you're invisible, you shouldn't be able to post. IMO
