that is cool...I love it, someone with a dedicated hydro veggie garden...Now, I hate to be a nay-sayer, but I must advise you of my experience with different plants in the same tubs.
different roots getting all tangled up can create a couple problems. 1st... you are stuck with all the plants, even if they don't produce...unless you chop them off and leave roots in rez...a big pain...And I hate saying all this to ya' 'cause I know how excited you are...been there done that. 2nd... your plants might not be able to uptake enough food to produce good yield, due to root competition between all the different plants.
***You notice above; I did not say, "strains of veggies", although that is also a concern...having more than 1 strain per tub is not advisable***
Perhaps using drip, you might not have a problem. I am looking forward to see what you accomplish, we can all learn from your efforts, Thanks, latewood
I do understand.. I am starting these tomatoes in the drip and will move to DWC in the 2.5 gal water jug setup.. i think you did the post on those.. i have some onions sprouting now too but i have learned that plants like onions and garlic do terrible in rockwool because of too much moisture.. when they get big enough i am going to pull them and try and grow them in hydroton pellets alone.
I have 4ft floros to set up too that will cover everything and I may grow more uniform stuff in a bit but there are still aphids here and there on that one setup and im waiting to make sure ive got that under control.
I have all the best nutes and additives left over from my other grow.. if you notice on the pics that tub is actually the one I was using in my other grow.. which had to be canceled due my dumbass roomate getting drunk and telling the whole world.. he now owes me alot of money which im sure I will never see again.
Maybe in a year or two when everyone I meet doesnt know me as "the guy that grows..." thanks to that loud mouth mother f...
Heres a tip for all to enjoy.. if you have a roomate or friend that cannot be avoided from knowing about your operation.. make them financially involved in it big time.. make them order your hydro gear and put solid money in the deal.. like hundreds of dollars! otherwise they have nothing to lose by telling everyone and since they want to sound cool and are too dumb to do anything cool on their own.. you get burned.
peace ppl! hope you will still have me here even tho im not cool enough to grow the real cash crop!
you got good ideas, and I think it'll work...I even thought of trying to use those 2.5 gallon containers like beige hydro buckets. filled with perlite on drip...it would take some tweaking, but you could open the drain, and the way jug is shaped...you would have a night-time rez in the bottom...
I might try it with a couple peppers plants...keep it up, peace latewood
Hey, my tomato plants dont look so good. Could this be too much water or somthing? Leaves are curling upwards. They are nice green but the curling issue has me worried. Also, look at the leaves on this sunflower plant... ever see anything like this? Its only the lower leaves. As you can see, the top new growths on the plant look fine.

no idea, we grew some sunflowers, but I odn't remember a problem, that looks like some type of...worm maybe? I'm curious. when I started this little fun forum, I was hoping that occasionally...someone really knowledgable about veggies would step up. My knwoledge is pretty much, reading, discussion/good advice turned into trial and error, and I read Growing edge mag and maximum yield...check out their sites for some piks of sunflower problems...Hell google sunflowers. LOL peace Hang in there. I know it can be discouraging on occasion.
What's up Latewood and everybody - I'll be joining the Veggie Society in a few weeks when my setup is complete. In the meantime, I've been reading about what you guys have been growing. I'll try some indoor stuff until next spring - I have.....
Italian Pesto Basil
Stirfry Mix (Red Mustard, Mizspoona, Poc Choi & Asian Red Kale)
Francisca & Red Savina Habanero Chiles (hottest peppers in the world!)
can't wait MT...looks like you have a nice selection...Me I am getting ready to show some pepper plants, and I am going to try some romaine, yellow squash, and cucumbers in our new experimental station...Glad to see you around. You are also invited to come see us at http://www.hygronomics.com. We are just a baby, but we are trying to build a self-substantial, politically active, anti-establishmentary, hydro veggies and equipment forum with a spiritual side. peace
Hello lw
I'am a son of two hillbilly from Tenn. & Ky.When I was a tot my gram show me to Save the seed from your vegs and to dry them on news papper in the attic for next year.We lived in a 4 season climate and now I live in a 2 season
But I still do the same in growing, you have 2 diffident grow seasons.Spring its tomatos, peppers lettuce, cus and in the fall its orka and hardy plants.
Every thing in the garden that you didnt eat{the stalks & vines}ect. You feed to the cows & pigs & Chickens. Here's the good part, what the cows eat go in one end and comes out the other.and in the spring all of us kids had to clean
out the barn and spead it out over the graden before they turned the soil under.Great fertilizer for tomatos and everything in between. So the next time
you get a good veg save the seeds dry them and plant them you will be a real
organic Hillbilly Gardener.
thanks bro...I dry/save seeds from all my plants for my co-op seedbank at hygronomics.com, thanks for the post.
I was thinking of doing some cherry tomatoes on my balcony. I eat a lot of salad...so it'd be nice to grow my own. When would I plant them? Obviously not now as it's getting cold...but when is the ideal time to plant tomatoes for outdoor growth?
you start your seeds inside...where they can be nice and toasty...
then as soon as the last frost hits...you plant your seedlings...
perhaps If you faricated a little green house on the porch using plastic...you could keep them warm and enhance the shorter day of sun with a 250wHID lamp. that's what I do...
This winter I am do my 1st winter nursery hydro growing... I am doing a start-up to an experimental station for my website...Can you say tax write-off? Goodluck, let me know how your doing, peace
I am looking at dabbling with some indoor vegetable gardening and have been poking around to get a feel for the ins and outs, but find that there are a lot of basic things that I can't seem to get the answers to. Well just to start off, With the pollination of some budding veggies, will an oscillating fan in the room be sufficient to transfer pollen or do you have to always use brushes and so on for consistent results? I could possibly start a miniature bee farm in the room for some cross pollination I guess, LOL.
what seem to be a good light output/wattage for something like a tub of cherry tomatoes? Also, I read that MH lights are good to take green veggies all the way through and HPS for budding plants, but with the budding plants should they use a MH at all or is a HPS sufficient?
I am looking for any lists that state an approximate wattage need for certain veggies. all I can seem to find is greens need less while budding veggies need more and so on, but I would like to know for instance, will a 600w be sufficient for a 5x6 area, or do they suck up as much light as MJ? do veggies need less light than MJ? I want to get an idea of what it would take to meet some basic monthly veg treats for the family, not every meal, but something hear and there throughout the winter months.
Can anyone recommend some good articles on indoor gardening. LW I have been over to the Cutting Edge forums and will continue to poke around there. Hope that everything doesn't sound too confusing.
Any input will be appreciated.
Hear is a list that I found that gives an idea of a few things that can be grown indoors that I didn't find in this thread so far and I thought since it was interesting to me it might be to some other people as well, Adieu Some varieties suitable for indoor planting include:

Beets Little Ball
Beans, Snap Any "bush" variety
Cabbage Cabbage Morden Dwarf, Earlianna
Carrots Lady Finger, Short `n' Sweet
Cucumbers Bush Whopper, Bush Champion, Potluck, Spacemaster

pollination. I have been told all of the above...fans, brushes, and gentle shaking of the stem w/flowers...ladybugs eat pests and can help in the pollination process. I have all my veggies outside now, but am trying to complete my nursery. I actually put pepper plants under a canopy and they went crazy, w/only 50% light.
1000w Mh Or hps will work in my opinion. Can you wire electrical components? I bought all my ballasts raw and wired them. Look for link to my website above. On the middle lower right hand side...There is a link. copy/paste that link to your browser...then use it to search for raw ballasts...you will find a wide range of lights and kits that will do the trick!
You can grow any of the varieties you listed above...the only thing is; You must find the proper medium for each> Are you Hydro?, or Soil?
back later, broke my foot. gotta go. peace
Thanks LW sorry to here about your foot. I have a couple 1K MH balasts sitting around somewhere that I can use, but I just need some extra room, my sister and law is taking up the extra 180SQF room up right now and it is a pain. I am growing in soil right now, but am thinking about doing the veggies in hydro but I am not sure yet. I am waiting to get some literature in the mail right now about indoor gardening and then I will have a better idea of what I want to experiment with.
Thanks for getting back to me.
Adieu
Hello all, sorry to butt in like this but I'm bringing in my herbs from the outdoor garden this afternoon and have only 24h and 12/12 light available (not making a 3rd room, omg I'd be so confused!).
So far I've got basil, pennyroyal, 2 other types of mint, and rosemary.
Which room would you recommend, 24 or 12 hours of light?
Or to maximize my space, should I switch my 24h room to 18/6 and put the herbs in there?
Thanks.
Nice yeild off those peppers, they look awesome. would be crazy to see an indica or sativa yield there. Hey can you take a pic of your light set up, seems like its pretty efficient, just wanted to see its configuration in your garden.
Lw, can i ask you somthing about dwc system?
LVNerd. I run a 6 foot hydrofarm light rail and w/hortilux hps
about 2 feet parallel to wall.
I hang a couple 1000w MH I move over an area I feel need some light intensity.
the piks you see have a 250w hps sont agromax, I think right over top. peace
Leg' anytime! what do you want to know? If about dwc and mj...make a new thread in hydroponics, please. lw
Well, its just about DWC in general... I read a post saying that in DWC you are not supposed to use full strength nutes at all because the roots are constantly sitting in the soultion and would burn them up. Since i believe you are the DWC master ;) , what is your word on this?
I run full strength nutes once I start veg. I may at times cut some of the liquid karma. and I find it important to top off with fresh ph'd water, in order to give the plants a chance to use available stored nutes as well.
hey man, sorry about this...

Cool L3...I have some good pepper piks, and I just got some dutch hydro buckets so that I can have a commercial drip set-up. peace
I want to grow some strawberries indoors in soil, and I've been doing lots of reading. It appears they are photoperiod dependent on flowering as well. I think the day-neutral strawberries look like the best candidate for indoor since they bear fruit the whole season outdoor (like spring through fall) instead of one harvest in june. Any input? Every where I find only really has info about growing already live plants, not much info about starting from seed. Where would I even find seeds that are good for growing, would ones from store bought fruit work, kinda like pot bag seed?
Well, after reading through this and forgetting most of it cause of how HIgh i am, i decided to grow peppers too since I have a perfect closet for it. I went out and got 4 100watt (23watt 1600 lumens, the warm ones but fuck it they work, look at my other grow lol) cfls. They were on sale in a 4 pack for $9.85 or a 2 pack for $8.85  I was originally gonna buy the 150 watt (42 watt 2700 lumen) one for $9.85. Being stoned makes me such a great bargain shopper lol. 6,400 - 2,700 = 3,700 more lumens for the same price
I went out and bought 3 packs of seeds: 2 varieties of jalapeno & 1 long red cayenne. Feed stores are a great place for seeds when its not the season, btw. They have EVERYTHING year round. Only cost like 3 bucks. The old man at the counter was curious why I am growing peppers at this time of year. He was hella impressed to find out I was growing them in a closet. He gave me lots of pepper growing tips and we discussed germination methods and told me to come back and tell him how it went. Old people are so cool.
He said to put them in a wet paper towel somewhere warm overnight or a day and then plant them and keep them somewhere warm. I usually germinate my other seeds in the towel until they sprout roots, but on the bag it says these seeds take 14-21 days to germinate, so I'm guessing they might rot in the paper towel or something. Any input on that latewood?
Well I planted some straight in soil (scotts seed starting potting soil), i put 2 in each hole, 4 in a cup just to see which method sprouts faster. I buried them all at different depths too, to see what works best. Being a stoner I forgot to mark which hole was which depth lol. I did remember to mark which cup was which though :D
Hell yeah! Thats the exact strain of cayenne I planted. How long did it take for the seed to sprout and how long was it from germination to harvest?Quote:

ladybugs and a breeze, but I tell you without assistance to pollenate, yields are low. Good luck
I think i'm gonna just use the paintbrush technique. I don't care much about yield as long as I get a few peppers. This is more of a hobby to pass the time rather than to get lbs of food. In other words I'm not gonna be disappointed if they don't kick ass. I ordered some beautiful peruvian purple chiles that according to the website make great ornamental indoor plants. The foilage and all is purple, with the fruit looking almost black til it matures. My logic was that if they make good ornamental indoor plants under standard indoor lighting, they'll probably do great in my little room. Check em out. Peruvian Purple ChileQuote:

W00t got my purple chiles, and they mailed me a free pack of lemon basil heirloom seeds. I'll let you know how they go latewood, with pics. I've been having some seeds germinating in soil and some germinating a paper towel. I can see the ones in the towel swelling up, they're definitely not as thin as they were when I got them, I compared them sided by side. So hopefully only a few days more, then I'll have baby pictures.
Just wanted to post an interesting find. http://www.karenplatt.co.uk/books/
She has like bunches of books, one called "Black Magic & Purple Passion" that is all about like every purple plant. Awesome pics. Also has a book that lists over 40,000 species and what seedbanks have them and how to get them. 9,500 vegetables. Kinda cool, i might order that book when I get paid. Has books for all different colors of plant it looks like.

http://www.hygronomics.com/forum1 is back up and running! Yeehaw!!! I will be adding a bunch of posts about indoor outdoor winter growing. Still have some construction to do
Check out this monster bell pepper!! Its off the bell pepper plant in the previous pics in this thread.. The plant is near its end of life now and its tossing massive peppers that look and taste SOOOOOO much better than the store bought ones. One of the most effective things I have found so far is Carboload by AN.. Im not particularly an AN fan myself but when it comes to veggies that stuff did seem to pack on some mass and size. I picked this one a little early because Im making some goulash and needed a bell pepper.. otherwise it may have fluffed out a bit more round like the store bought crap.. but most of that is just air space anyways.. and you dont want to know what they spray on it to get that look I promise.
This bell pepper weights so much.. Look at the massive walls of this puppy.. Way thicker than the wally world peppers! it will surely make some fine goulash!
great looking pepper...I have had quite a few of them myself.
not cut out the seeds and stick them in an envelope to dry...then you will ahve seeds that are adapted to your growing philosophy
My peppers. That purple one is the peruvian purple chile. Pretty cool, but I think I fucked it up. The leaves don't seem to grow right, they start off rolled up, but they are un-rolling slightly as they turn darker green. I think I'm gonna feed them with next watering, 1/4 strength dose fox farms grow big.
The one in the second pic is my healthiest looking one. The other green one with the fucked up leaves is my retard. I always have at least one retarded plant, no matter what I grow. The big one is growing a lot per day now. The smaller leaf on it wasn't fully developed only like 18 hours before this pic.
looks a little dry, there...
I would not feed nutes too early...most of the farmers I know just water adding 1/4tsp per gallon superthrive...until they are ready for transplant...Now I see you already have your seedlings in bigger pots...That's OK, just remember...no nutes for seedlings. Wait until they have 4-5 tiers of leaves then give them a full strength dose of nutes...followed by a week of watering. (that should only be 1-2 waterings a week for plants that small. 2-3 times a week as they start drinking more) peace. Glad you guys are having a good time. Look forward to seeing you at http://hygronomics.com/forum1. That site is getting ready to get bustling, and I am getting ready to start a bunch of varieties of veggies. L
lol this is clearly a good idea for a new grow section for the forums, look at all the replies already ;):);)
I gave them a very weak feeding of grow big & big bloom with some superthrive the day before thanksgiving and I came back after thanksgiving dinner and they've already grown like a whole new set of leaves and the purple one sprouted 4 new growth shoots from leaf crotches. I think they liked it.
just careful with nutes...they are still too young for nutes, but I am glad to see you having success. peace
I am getting ready to start a bunch of different veggie seeds, for a winter greenhouse experiment. Will keep you posted here and @http://www.hygronomics.com/forum1 my uncles site.:smokin: peace
